Out of interest Poppy, have you ever challenged anyone?

(Challenged is probably the wrong word, perhaps asked why the face covering is being worn incorrectly.)

I did, last week.  An older lady was wearing hers over her mouth but under her mouth. I pointed out that her nose should be covered, she looked a little embarrassed and pulled it up. A little later I saw her again with it back under her nose, so it was clearly deliberate on her part !

  2. I noticed this in the Sailing Instructions at a junior event held near my son's home.
    Rule 1.1
All sailors are required to participate in the spirit of fun at all times.
Violators of Rule 1 may be made to dance the Macarena.

I think this rule should be made compulsory for all yacht racing.

Iwould addanother: Any racing boat who claims priority over a cruising stand on vessel because "I'm racing" has to buy the post-race drinks !

Again, good point, I think the only effective counter attack would be to highlight that this is what is happening. It is a 'high stakes' strategy for both sides.

However, it will be tricky to keep this line of thought, and party politics separate, so I will have to keep further replies restricted to the problems as being demonstrated by our general public's selfishness.

Whilst in the supermarket today, it was encouraging to see, in general widw use of masks.

What I found annoying was the number of pensioners  (exclusively oldies ! ) who were wearing theirs underneath their noses ! :default_2gunsfiring_v1:

On my return from holidaying in Wales, post the storm, I was somewhat dismayed to see alot more original wooden defences exposed. Both the 90deg groynes and also those parallel to the sea/cliff face.

"Soft" sandscaping worked well then :default_biggrin:

  5. Thanks Paul. I have looked at the 'off the shelf' options, but none are long enough.  It's for the roof of my 28' broads yacht.

I had the contact details for a guy who was making to measure, but I've los it.....

I think a lot of people are worried about the security side of what is an open Bluetooth application.

My main mobile exacty mirrors my tablet an contains a lot of private financial information.

So I will not be putting it on that one.

I did post something at the week end to that effect, I also included a link to a nes paper story (Sunday Times) claiming that personal data obtained from the QR scans was being sold.

It appeared to be moderated , once again with no notice or explaination !

So, I have watched it.  It was either that or Songs of Praise and even that nowadays, is more concerned with its agenda message, than actual "songs of praise".

It is only a couple of minutes so I have watched it several times.  I have noticed a few things, not necessarily in order of appearance :

When we get the title on screen "Welcome to the Broads National park", it appears over an aerial view of the Whitlingham gravel pits.  That should tell us something, for a start!

Gillingham Dam in Beccles, when flooded in mid winter, is neither a lake, nor a Broad.  Just a flooded marsh road.

Nice shots of the Yare Navigation Race but that only happens on one day a year, so hardly "typical".  Same applies to regatta sailing on Black Horse Broad.

Fallow deer stags, galloping over a stubble field, in open country?  When did you last see that from your holiday cruiser?

Five white horses, rolling in the mud on heathland?  Breckland, maybe, but not Broadland.  So not typical!

Distance swimming on the Waveney is hardly typical either!

I thought burning off reed stubble was no longer allowed, on the Broads?

I did see that the paddle boarders were in lifejackets and appeared to be supervised.  They were also filmed in quiet waters around Coltishall, which are suitable for that activity.

I am left wondering what this is supposed to represent?  If it is someone's vision of the Broads, then it is not mine!

So is it a mis-representation?  Perhaps that is the question.

Straw and stubble burning has been illeagal for some years AFAIK, but I regulary see burning (of reed straw ?) beside Barton and lower down the Ant towards How Hkll.

  8. JM, your post came in as I was typing in a similar vein to the Academy in which I referenced the various legislations pertaining to the Broads and information on The Sandford Principle ( a report from the Broads Society. )

  9. "Rivers rated “poor” include parts of the Blackwater, Tiffey, Chet and Bure, while “poor” broads include Barton Broad, Hoveton Great Broad, Ranworth Broad, Ormesby Broad and Filby Broad

So much for 'Clearwater 2000' then.

I canno5 imagine that the BA will be looking at anything as drastic as imposing rules to force holidaymakers to increase the cost of their holidays by upwards of £1000 by enforcing ‘skippered’ cruises for novices.  Killing the hire industry would have a massively negative effect on their income.  Get real - some of the large Broom boats already cost in excess of 3k a week in high season.  Can you imagine folk adding another thousand pounds plus to pay for a skipper.  You can have two weeks on a cruise ship, catered for less.

As I said earlier, some of your ideas may be sound, but I’ll thought out and totally unworkable in reality.

Agreed.  However, offering training ( which could, but need not lead to a bit of paper) rather more extensive than the 'tick box' exercise which suffices for many  - NOT ALL - hires would be of benefit to all.

This has been suggested on this very thread but dismissed by some as unworkable !  I know it isn't , since yacht hire yards offer it. As far as I know, none of the motor boat yards do .

This thread, and others like it, degenerated from interesting viewpoints, to my way or the toys will be expelled from the baby carriage. These things seem to go in cycles. I remember a year or so ago, when many people were over-excercised about stag and hen do antics. The Broads survived that, and I'm sure will go on to surmount any difficulties brought about this year by the unprecedented (in recent times) number of new visitors to boating holidays. This is not to dismiss the awful suffering of those involved with the tragedies, it's just to point out to those poster's who perceive it to be a matter of honour, that there will be something else to argue about before long.

It has seemed over time that anything perceived to be  in the slightest bit critical of hirers or the hire boat industry attracts criticism , often aggresive in nature .

Sadly so, but those private owners and many hirers here have a huge and deep love for the Broads.

Out of touch, maybe? I did suggest £500 not £250. Is that just Richardsons policy, or all hire yards? But above all, out of touch or not, did the suggestion warrant the response it got? Was the responses proportionate to being out of touch?

I got sick of treading on egg shells with this forum recently which is why I stopped posting. Even yesterday I was very careful when summarising some of the items from yesterday's meeting to purposely reverse the order of private and hirer in my summing up to avoid being accused of anti hire.

"General increase in aggression from private and hire boaters."

This forum really isn't worth that much attention to detail, it takes all the enjoyment out of it.

    Another good post !

I think this post is entirely unjustified and completely wrong.

RealWindmill made a perfectly sensible suggestion. So it was in ignorance of what already happens but it was met by a rather agressive reply from someone venting their frustration. After that is the usual standard forum rubbish of deliberate mis-interpretaions and replies based on them. Same old same old. Very unfair to pick out one poster, especially by a mod.

Well put. It does seem that mods do 'take sides'  That shouldn't be the case. Good moderation should be almost unnoticable to anyone but the individual who needs advice.
