  1. seeing as my boat will never go to sea, it;s a broads boat so good luck to anyone who even wants to try it.

i am in the process of changing my raw water inlet as it's an old gate valve and i want a 1/4 turn lever valve.

I know for sea use it should be bronze, but what about fresh water ie the broads?

on my toilet intake it is a heavy duty plastic fitting and shut-off valve, big chunky thing

i was going to get a scoop filter inlet, just not sure what to get, stainless, plastic or bronze

and then same with the valve?

it will then go to a plastic water strainer and onto the bmc engine

    thanks

    Hi.

I stumbled across this forum and thought i would update with a bit of info. ACLE PEARL is alive and well and living in Pillings Lock Marina in Quorn, Leicestershire. I bought her around February 2015 and used her mainly as a live-aboard Monday to Friday while working there, occasionally going for a cruise up the river Soar. She was renamed Errandor some time before i acquired her (possibly around 2011), and i still own her, just using her occasionally as i now work close to home in Manchester.

Just in the process of fitting a brand new Bowman heat exchanger / manifold / header tank to go with the new alternator, fresh water pump, Jabsco raw water pump and spin on oil filter conversion.

She is for sale so i'm open to sensible offers!

If i knew how to post some photos i would! :)

would love to see some photo's, you can always send them to me via pm and i'll post them for you,

i do run a little FB group if you'd like to join, there's only 4 of us so far :)

  3. hi not sure if it's called langley dyke or hardley dyke

the small dead end bit on the river yare that has annual morrings along each side,

but does anyone know the contact details for them pls?

as i'm after annual moorings as near to beccles as possible which are cheappppp

    thanks

  4. according to bss it's 25mm from the bottom

NOTE – drain openings on the side of cylinder lockers not greater than 25mm above the bottom of the locker may be considered as at the lowest point of the side.

NOTE – with the consent of the owner, a bucket of water can be used to aid verification of Check Items 7.3.4 to 7.3.6.

  5. Hi

in the process of fitting a new stainless gas locker on my boat.

the bottom of the locker though is lower by about 6" than the drain hole in the boat or it would be under the water line.

i have been told that you can use Mikalite or something

you put the bottles in then pack this stuff around the bottom of the bottles, then the drain pipe can be higher than the bottom of the tank

    can anyone recommend anything ?

i have google mikalite but i presume i'm spelling it wrong as i can't find anything

unless there is something else i could use

    thanks

  6. oh i know it's easy, i've made all my sides, and all the other cushions on the last 3 boats i've restored, but always find the helm seat uncomfortable hard

I usually grab a 2nd hand memory foam mattress and cut that up for the internal seats that convert into a bed, really cheap usually about £20-30 for a decent 2nd hand mattress

  7. it's just a piece of ply, i have re-done the box so it's basically an open top box

and the seat makes the lid and it just sits on top with a couple of 1" battens to stop it moving

  8. i did think about that but my layout won't allow that annoyingly

my backrest is actually built into the unit which also doubles up as a side for the fridge / tv area if that makes sense

  9. I have a storage unit that has a foam cushion on top which is attached to a plywood base which is the helm seat

i need to keep the unit but want to make a really comfy seat for the top

It has normal foam at the minute but i find after an hour or so driving they get really uncomfortable

anyone got any ideas how to make it more comfy pls?

Hi I also own one of these boats, I have stripped it totally spray foam insulated, rewired it, added a wood burner and am now living on it on the river Ouse. I wanted to leave it original but as a liveaboard it wasn't feasible.

    oh brill hi

we have a little group of 3 of use owners if you'd like to join us.

Can you send me pictures etc pls

Your post was all sound advice, but only to someone who has a clue about engines in the first place.

The OP wants their hand holding in an almost literal sense so that they can learn about their engine.

The dangers of asking in forums like this is that there are always people prepared to give advice, whether it is sound or not. One thing that came up a couple of times here is that a BMC is a pig to bleed. The 1.8 can be but the 1.5, 2.2 and 2.5 are so simple and easy to bleed, I find it hard to understand how people would suggest otherwise.

We are currently converting a sloping BMC1.5 into a straight one for our fleet of hire boats, most of which use BMC engines. We know these things pretty well if you need any advice. Sadly, we can't come over to Beccles though as we are too busy in Thorpe.

i'm happy to come to Norwich, if 1 of your engineers or yourself is doing a service or an overhaul on a 1.5 BMC diesel, and observe

  13. asap won't sell just the nuts i don't think,

yes they are still on the industrial estate

    nope 28 tpi isn't a typo it's a very fine thread

did speak to someone who had a 5/8" unf but it wasn't 28 tpi

that is an idea Stranger i'll have a look

i did think could i re-tap the thread to accomadate a more common nut also

  14. ok confused me already lol

    yes it's a diesel.

and i know there is a fan belt for the alternator not sure about any gearbox levels i think it's a prm box i think thats what i was told.

i am one of these ppl if you show me and i do it i remember,

if i read it i will never remember it

hence why i'd really like someone who has patience just to walk me through it at the actualy boat and say this is this and that is that please

  15. trouble is i am pretty basic knowledge with regards to engines

yes i can change the oil etc and rewire a boat but i have no idea where wires go on the actual engine or alternator.

i did think about swapping the filter for a spin on normal type seen the conversion on flebay
