w44nty
Dan You must enter Mastermind, your Specialist Subject being "Boats of the Norfolk Broads",you will be untouchable, but do not ask Daytona Bill for any General Knowledge tips. You will Sail through it Excuse the pun!!!
goodall_m1
CI'm sure the boat name was sir tristain Andy, It was probably Sir Tristram Craig's boat database has some details that might help you: There were apparently two Sir Tristrams A874 (1976 - 1978) and W661 (1978 - 1985 /87) He has a photo of the later one but taken under previous ownership in 1966. http://www.horning.org.uk/boatsearch.php?page=search&search=yes&RegNo=7694&href=3¤t=no and a photo of a similar craft (apparenty taken from a Hoseasons' brochure) of the earlier one. He refers to the boatyard as "Womack Cruisers" and the entry for Sir Percivale in the Blakes Holiday Boating brochure of 1980 appears in that Postcards site. (reference is in the Thurne page but north of Potter Heigham, as the author came across a photo of her (under her earlier name of Commando) taken upstream of Potter bridge. ) It shows that they were trading under the name of Womack Cruisers in 1980, (all their boats were Sir somebody) and this seems to be a different organisation than Womack Boats (Have we actually caught Dan giving misinformation?) Guest DAYTONA-BILL
hi w44nty,no it wasnt hunters yard wich is much further up the dyke. thanks anyway. dan i think your right .. god where does your knoledge end?? my dad(who is no longer with us) my brother and me had a trip in late october from this yard im sure the boat name was sir tristain, god it was cold that week. im sure they were a blakes yard. the boat as far as i can remember was a wooden boat. any other pics would be great, thanks again andy Definately sounds like Womack boats as all their boats had names of knights of the round table, or so i believe?. But i thought they were at Ludham bridge on the river Ant. I know Ludham marine were based at the top end of Womack staithe since the 70s. Regards ................. Neil. AdnamsGirl
Hi The postcard is of Womack Boats which was situated a little way down from the Staithe ... this is an advert for them from 1974: Coincidently, W661 (the second Sir Tristram) began life as Classic Safari which was part of Hamptons fleet at Oulton Broad and was the boat which my brother-in-law hired for his Broads holiday in 1966. Springsong
Womack boats was owned in those days by Vaughn Ashby he now runs Blue line (is it) in France. His father was Commander Ashby of Hearts cruisers of Thorpe. The Ashby family lived on the Fairmile Evening Flight which used to be moored at the Hearts yard. AdnamsGirl
The Ashby's home was "Morning Flight" ... MGB 56 .... seen below from c1964. Carol
Springsong
You are of course quite right Carol, I can always rely on you to keep me honest I always get it wrong and mixed up with the RC Evening Flight which may even have been Vaughn's yacht at one time, but I am probably wrong again, someone may put me straight.
