  1. At least we have something in common Stowager

I worked for the GPO (Mail) which became Royal Mail,I can remember 1 of my early duties was messenger boy at the telephones in St Giles.

I am just a poor Royal Mail pensioner now so I have to watch my pennies

There were 240 to the £ then now its only 100

And also to keep the thread title going

    No speed cameras either

  2. Lets hope Strowager do not get a job with the treasury, fuel would be nearly £3 a litre based on those figures.

One final thing for me to point out is

"Strowager is not always right ,but he is very rarely wrong" :naughty::naughty::naughty::naughty:

  3. That went down well then.... :)

Fuel was indeed cheaper in the 60's but you used more as MPG was poor on most cars.

The average car now costs £60 a week to fill it up,then you could fill up for £3 a week,so if you are on £600 per week take home pay it is 10% of your wage,I would say not many working men are on that sort of take home pay so the pecentage is much higher.

Something has to give soon before people start going to the wall

  4. I have never heard such a ridiculous idea as paying more tax on fuel to replace the road tax.

My boat does about 1 mpg on petrol, bad enough paying road levy on it let alone road tax too. :cry

I think the suggestion was based on the more you use the roads the more tax you would pay, which means a low user would be happy to pay more for fuel with the tax combined and the heavy road users would pay more.

I would support neither I am a low user and pay my tax on fuel,A higher user pays more tax than me because they use more fuel, therefore it seems not logical,to abolish road tax and add it to fuel costs.

Also Senator you are correct saying why should you pay the extra tax if your fuel is used on your boat, you are not using the roads, unless they are B roads (broads).

  5. Quite wide fast flowing rivers, plenty of pubs that you can get a mooring at even at 6pm, decent marinas and good food.

    Welcome to the South cheersbar

And the added bonus of having a mooring 5 mins from home, thats as close as I will get, unless of course I win the Lottery.

  6. I completed the North to South trip today,it was a nice trip round and weather was kind to us.

We left Ranworth at 06:45 and arrived at Great Yarmouth ar 09:15 which suprised me a bit as I thought it would take longer,we had breakfast topped up fuel(it only used 5 litres from Ranworth)and departed for the trip over Breydon at 10:15.

Another stop at the Ferry Inn Surlingham for 30 mins for coffee,we then set off for Thorpe ,we arrived at 14:45 feeling very pleased with our efforts,on the entire trip we never saw another boat cruising on the river, now that must be a record,Ranworth to Norwich and we were the only boat out today.

I took a few pics's on the way which I will post later.

Thanks everyone for your help in giving good advice etc for the trip.

  7. Thanks everyone,we are now going to attempt the journey in one hit, keep an eye out for us,if we do run late we will stop over, but we are up for it.

Thanks Antares for making my mind up for me with your comments.

I will post details of journey later and pictures etc taken on route.

  8. I have decided to take a break on my journey Nth To Sth this Thursday,I think it will be too much to ask to do Ranworth to Thorpe in one day, bearing in mind there are only about 9 hours daylight.

I am planning to cross Breydon about 11:00 Thursday and carry on and moor overnight at Reedham,I can then return Friday morning and continue the trip to Thorpe.

Q1 Is it safe to moor overnight at Reedham and where is best place.

Q2 Is there Parking all day as I will have to leave a car at Reedham so we can get home

Any other ideas from anyone or suggestions to help with mooring and parking etc

  9. Next Thursday is the big day,we will get everything ready for an early start,we are loooking to leave Ranworth about 6:30am and stop for breakfast at Great Yarmouth, then cross Breydon for the journey to Thorpe.

If you are out and about next Thursday you might see Rosie on our epic journey.

  10. I got mine yesterday,I noticed a couple of boats had exactly the same picture as other boats advertised.

Overall not much difference from previous years, although in my opinion the pictures actually flatter the boats a bit, however as always there is something for everyones budget, nice to see Melody advertised we had a great holiday on her a couple of years ago.

  11. Absolutely agree with Ian here, if you tie up at YH (the only time I would ever stop there) and wait for the tide to make unless it already is you will use less fuel and make better time.Slack is only predicted, not written in stone so best to suck it and see when you reach YH harbour.

    Good stuff

We have planned to moored at Twobagsbrooks mooring near yacht station and pop over cafe for breakfast, alsoit will give engine a rest ready for the homeward trip

  12. Thanks for all the tips and offers of help,I don't think speeding will apply to me much as I shall be chugging along.

We are looking to make the trip Ranworth to Thorpe next week, either Thursday or Friday,I think they are the best tides to do it in a day,am I correct in saying the best time to cross breydon is at slack low water and this is about 1 hr 15 min after low water?

Any help with set off times, tide times etc and stops for a break will be appreciated

    Thanks again

  13. I remember the old days very well,as a young lad I used to watch the ships in the river, loading scrap from Archie Kings, unloading wood at Jewsons,Flour at Reads and coal at the coalyards .

I also used to watch to see them turning around in the turning basin, now that was helmsmanship, inches to spare.

With the new bridges across the Wensum, the Port of Norwich will never be again

  14. HI Wanty

I did HiCraft in Norwich (near the A47 viaduct) to Womack water a couple of years ago in 8 hours, but that included getting the tide wrong at Breydon and towing another boat the whole way.

Thats where I am mooring, at City Boats,A tow would be nice, fancy a day out?,I might even get on the plane over Breydon if you are towing me at about 20 knots :naughty::naughty::naughty::naughty:

  15. I shall have to pick a day when it is low tide at GY between 9:30 -11:00,that way I should make it to Norwich (Thorpe) in day light,I don,t mind starting out in the dark Rosie is fitted with Nav light etc alsoI am familiar with the southside.

My friend and fellow boat owner Twobagsbrooks is keeping me company,we shall take plenty of supplies for hot drinks etc, mobile phones, and all the normal safety bits .

Having a 4 stroke engine I will not need to take much fuel with me ,enought to refill and some spare.

my current moorings at Ranworth are frozen solid at the moment so I cannot go anywhere until it defrosts.

My contingency is to do it over 2 days,ie moor up at Reedham and get my son to pick me up and return next day for onward trip to Norwich

  16. Thanks

Rosie has a 15hp 4 stroke Suzuki ,I have never had her flat out,but I would say about 8 knots is max speed with the tide with us,if I allow 3 hours to Yarmouth would that be enough to get there for low slack water for crossing Breydon.

Also I want to arrive in Norwich in daylight hours

  17. I shall be taking Rosie on a trip from Ranworth to Norwich in 2weeks time ,what is a realistic journey time, bearing in mind I want to be at Yarmouth at low water to cross Breydon.

We have never ventured that far since I have had her,we are looking to stay in Norwich for a couple of years.

  18. Just to resurect this thread, I have travelled along this stretch of road 3 times in the last fortnight, and each time seen a Highway Maintenance vehicle attending one of the cameras with a technician working on the innards of the electrical cabinets. Could it be these cameras are actually being made operational now?

I travelled down there today Mark, the engineers were working on the cameras
