War medals are earned, they didn't dish them out for nothing, even to future Consorts.

The fact he became engaged to our future Queen in1947 doesn't alter the fact that he joined the Royal Navy in 1939 at age 18 and served in numerous theatres of war.

It looks good for a Royal to wear medals, you can receive one for living on the back bench so to speak.

I'm not a keen Royal lover, but for me William and Harry are down with us kids so to speak, compared with Philip and Charles.

My opinion is as it always was. My remark was a sign that I did not wish to rise to your bait. I still don't now.

I am not trying to bait you, I just remember as I said how my dad use to get irate when he saw Philip on tv and through the years when Philip has come up in conversation, it seems to be a joke for many. Plus lets not forget, he has let go quite a few gaffes in the past and can be considered as a Royal comedian!

I wonder where he got the Mention in Dispatches from then?  Or the Greek War Medal, in recognition of his bravery during the Italian invasion of Greece in 1941?

When I said about Royals serving in the armed forces and wrapped in cotton wool, your reply was "If only you knew"

You mention a couple of medals concerning Philip, but what about the rest?

Have you taken a u turn on your opinion with the royals?

Apparently poor old Nyx is greener and more sap covered than my friend has ever seen it.

Now, some of you may remember that I used to pay someone to clean it. Nobody could tell if he had or hadn't. To be blunt, he wasn't frightfully good at cleaning boats, and as I was going through a financially tight time, we agreed to part our ways

By the way, God doesn't except cheques and the rainfall is free of charge!

Prince Philip had a distinguished naval career and was involved in the fighting during WW2. I can tell you his former ship mates thought the world of him when I attended the dedication of HMS Cavalier the National Destroyer Monument with Uncle Albert.

Unfortunately my dad had the opposite thinking to you, unless there is a joke going on here linked to Only Fools and Horses?

I can always remember when I was living at home and my dad was still around, he always had a severe rant at the tv when Philip appeared wearing his RSJ supported medals. I think it was because his dad died during his service war years and picked up a couple of medals and Philip who has many, I doubt has heard a bullet pass by his head.

Over the years I have heard this brought up in conversation concerning the royals and Philip, and it seems for many to be and on going joke.

A good example is Prince William, whose military rank is Major, in the Household Cavalry (Blues and Royals) but who also has the honorary rank of Colonel in Chief of the Irish Guards.

I don't know if I am right in saying this but I have always felt that Royals who serve in the British forces are always wrapped in cotton wool so to speak. I feel for the ones who don't and have life changing injuries. That's why I like Harry, because he realises this and for what he has done for ex army serviceman to be recognised is commendable.

    Is there hope.

Now this is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. But it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning.

    Winston Churchill

Never understood this comment, but I assume some people thought this had meaning.

Perhaps he is remembered for us winning the war, and should not be for winning the war!

  8. Unfortunately I was a bit sad and cheesy with my first car. It was a red Capri MK11 with the identifiable power bulge on the bonnet. 0 to 60 in 20 seconds going down hill, fog lights front and back, rear louvre on the tail gate, 20 watts per channel to the 4 speakers with the Audioline graphic equalizer with power LED's, rear static strips and to finish it off I had a George Michael striped blonde hair look.

I would be interested to know about anybody else's cheesy teenage early car ownership stories.:default_biggrin:

  9. I went to the Fairhaven water garden last year and found it a really wonderful place to go. If you like a long walk in a garden that seems to go on forever, has little rivers running through it and you can take your dog, I would recommend it to anyone.

Got a little surprise in the post today in the form of a poster I bought on ebay and then promptly forgot about.......

This reminds me of what the RAF had in WW2 to identify enemy aircraft, obviously this is the broads version and I'm sure they are all friendly.

you have obviously never been on lads week where drinking starts at morning coffee. to my knowledge i have never seen a carelessly discarded bottle or cap or can while on lads week, and having taken the rubbish bags to the disposal point, i can attest to the fact that all of those bottles caps and cans are disposed of properly.

How can your lads week compare to the thousand of boozy holiday makers on the broads? You cannot oversea people you don't know!

Amethyst is no longer. She was owned by a couple who had her based at Princess Cruisers marina in Loddon and who'd spent quite some time and money on her over the years. Sadly, about 5 years ago Amethyst's hull was deemed beyond repair and I was told she was broken up on site.

Emerald. I spent probably five years looking for Emerald but have never found a trace of her.

Topaz. Now here's a happier tale. Topaz is alive and kicking and down south. She is somewhat modified from her original lines and now called Spruce Goose. More information on the National Historic Ships register where she can be found but heres a couple of snaps from a few years ago by her current owner.

Blue Diamond. At one time it was thought that Blue Diamond was used as a mobile shop on the northern rivers but that turned out to be a different boat. Blue Diamond is a fairly common name which has lead to a couple of wild goose chases but no sign of her.

Falling Leaves. We nearly acquired one of the Falling Leaves a few years ago. She had been used as a liveaboard and was in quite a state but we would have taken her on if the seller had been anywhere reasonable with his asking price. "They are worth £40.000 done so I want £7500 for the wreck" She was based on Thorpe Island and met with a chain saw a couple of years ago. Her sister ship seems long gone. I was also searching for Pegasus - another from the class. Did you know Fred Newson built half a dozen of them?

Here's the last picture I have of her taken in 2013

Babe Grande. Babe was laying at Martham Boats and not in bad overall condition but abandoned. She was broken up 2 years ago along with about a dozen other old broads cruisers when that part of the site was cleared.

Turkish Desires. No idea where they have ended up but they are not on the Broads. They are easy to spot though as there were only ever four Ideal 40's with the dark tinted 'Sundym' windows. Your grandad's two had varnished oak rubbing strakes and mahogany interiors. By the way, did you know your grandad had a hand in the Ideal 40's inception? Thats a story for another day. Here's a well used (on here at least) photograph of Turkish Desire No1, the first Ideal 40, at her launch.

Yep, I do need to get out more!

For me that is one ugly looking boat and with photo shop men on board so to speak, the picture for me is destined for the shedder.

but a Broads holiday with no pubs is a frightening prospect.

    For some probably yes.

Being afloat with no pubs open would be far more attractive than not being afloat at all.  We would just take our libations onboard as we normally do but the difference bring it would all be onboard, I can live with that.

    Griff

Unfortunately if that was the case and for some or most of our holiday makers, a lot of bottles along with caps and cans would end up in the river!

Try and keep the drinking to the pubs Griff!!!!!

Cleaning Anodised Aluminium - Save money Don't buy owt that has 'Marine' on the label / price tag.  Get yersen some car type alloy wheel cleaner - Much cheaper, very effective and won't harm the anodized finish.

Y'all can thank me later - Mines a pint! :default_beerchug:

If anyone can interpret from Yorkshire to the English language, it would be appreciated. :default_biggrin:

  15. That's the trouble with those flappy things, they blot out the landscape and while you are trying to steer in a possible straight line and not annoy other river users with your unconventional tacking (I think that is the term) you miss out on what the Broads is all about. Believe me, stick to diesel!

Maxwellian is correct. We have delegated responsibility to do our jobs but will of course receive input from others where required. I can’t think of any local authorities who would require upper management or the CEO to approve everything that goes out in said authorities name.

There’s a lot of cross-team working at the Authority and if I need to provide someone with some information (e.g an update on a specific element of some dredging works), I will easily be able to get it from one of my colleagues in the ops team and relay it to whoever has asked.

On the other hand, if we had to get executive management sign off for all of the hundreds of proactive and reactive posts, tweets and public email responses that we make each week we wouldn’t get much done! John and our directors are very busy dealing with higher level issues and managing their own teams.

Things are of course different with particularly sensitive topics, e.g if we are putting a statement out on tolls, funding, governance (etc.) and this will have input and approval from management where required.

    Hope that helps

    Tom

I think you find that if you were to do your shopping list, you would still get more likes and thanks than most.

I have noticed on this site that there are a few on here that give a lot of input and should get more likes than that they receive. I myself can't bring much to the table as I don't own my own boat and since I am the only Broads lover in my family, my holidays in Norfolk are few and far between.

But I do love the Broads and care for their well being and for generations to come.

For me though when they have "Authority" in their name, they think they can do nothing wrong. So as I have said before, people will like you for what you are and will kiss some, because you are here!!!
