  1. My only regret is the 25hp outboard with fuel tank and cables on norfolk marines website for sale for £435 advertised last week. I'm at the point where i want to get it working before i decide whether to sell on or keep with restoring. At the end of the day i got the engine for free so the 400ish i've put in so far compared to the use i've got out of it isn't too bad . If i'd of paid for the engine then had to pay for the parts i would of cut my losses and got what money i could.
  2. Update: Couldn't test the outboard due to sods law. My hinge which holds the top of the outboard including pull start snapped while trying to pass the outboard into boat. The throttle then jammed meaning i have to take the top off to move the plastic part which locks the throttle (design flaw) and the kill switch cable also snapped, may i add all in one move. The outboard got caught on the decking as the whole weight was being dropped in the boat hence all the now broken parts. Next weekend ill fix it all then hopefully get her up and runnng again. On the subject of sods law, my self inflate lifejacket got so much water drip on it from the melting snow that it inflated. As it was wedged up next to the first aid box, it exploded the first aid box all over the boat, landing about 3 ft from where its stored. Another case of sods law as the tarps which normally keeps the area dry is held down with the fuel tank which went back on the boat today. Roll on spring so i can get the sunbrella on.
  3. I think i've finally got it right, won't know for sure till i stick it on the boat tomorrow. The locking mechanism was engaging properly etc it just seems to be that to get reverse i now have to push the gear select lever alot further back than before
  4. Hi, yeah both are set to neutral, didn't work. So tried both in forward and that didn't work either. Assembling with both in neutral means i get both neutral and forward but no matter what i try i can't get the reverse to engage. On the short splined shaft i can either have it flat side facing inwards or turn it 45% to the right and thats all. In my head i think it should also turn left which would be the reverse gear.
  5. Hi all. I've put the lower unit back on and it has forward and neutral but wont shift into reverse anymore. I've taken off and reinstalled a few times and can't get it to work. Any advice would be greatly appreciated asap.
  6. Had to pay £48 which was the 20% vat plus an £8 charge.
  7. Little update: Received the lower unit today after a lot of issues with parelforce ( mainly the fact i paid the customs charges but they didn't update that fact in their system). So after sitting in their depot for 6 days i printed bank statement etc and went to the warehouse and picked up in person. So far it looks in perfect condition. Obviously due to the late hour i've gotten home i'll be fitting it tomorrow/today so wish me luck, and hopefully you'll be seeing me up and running on the broads by this weekend
  8. Update. Should of read the link first. Turns out he's actually called boo. As far as the electric fence mentioned in the article, they've put the posts in, but no fence so far. There is however a rope across the island side of the bridge so he can't escape. It also means i can't pull up to my mooring in the car anymore as boo's enclosure leaves just walking space up to the mooring rather than being able to pull the car up next to it ( the hours spent clearing weeds wasted may i add). I think boo is a great addition to the island and i hope no one has any objections to his presence there.
  9. His name is Bo. When i went over the other night i gave him a carrot. Now everytime i go over he stands blocking the bridge until i offer him some food Sent from my XOOM 2 ME using Tapatalk HD
  10. Hi everyone. I was wondering if theres a set procedure for a boat frozen in an inch to two inches of ice I went to clear some snow off the boat today to find that the ropes were frozen solid, there was about 4 Inches of snow on the boat and that the whole mooring (basin) is frozen solid. What i've done is cleared the whole topside of boat and smashed as much ice around the boat as i could which wasn't a whole lot. I tried throwing a brick at the ice but it just ended up skidding so i attacked it with a metal pole . I'm now wondering if it was a good idea to smash the ice or not as it means the boat can now smash back and forth between the ice. I'm heading down again after work tomorrow/today so want to know whether to keep smashing away at the ice or let it refreeze around the boat and wait for it to melt naturally? P.s the mud weight could only crack the ice around the boat. I tried swinging it further into the basin but it wouldn't go through the ice.
  11. It was only a matter of time . The amount of times i've been reeling in a decent sized fish when a pike has attacked them is almost laughable. Hungry pike hunt on instinct and I guess this one just went straight in without noticing the size of the prey until it was too late.
  12. I did dig down and its just smooth metal after the gunky stuff. I had considered grinding some splines into shaft etc but know that bodging it would only result in more issues down the line. The plan is to put all the parts on and re service the whole outboard, new grease and oil all round, clean the carb, new pull start rope. Basically try to get it back to new(ish) condition. Hopefully i wont get stung by customs Sent from my XOOM 2 ME using Tapatalk HD
  13. Hi everyone, I've almost finished fixing up my boat and have done all the work myself. Today alone i've converted front and rear cabin doors into conertina doors and made a captains lean seat using some newel posts, foam and leatherette. Each job I've come across I've looked online and asked around and been gobsmacked by the prices. Personally i prefer to do all the work myself ( with advice from forumites when im unsure e.g electrics) and i was wondering what your opinions and preferences are when it comes to repairs, parts and accessories as to diy or pre made by professionals? Apologies if posted in wrong category
  14. I've taken a risk and decided to repair the outboard rather than buy another one that could be a lemon. As i've been unable to find the year of my outboard via serial finding the parts has been alot of hassle. However i found a company in america with a lower unit that looks identical to mine (but with a splined shaft, anodes and in near enough brand new condition) and after a few emails was told it is the right one. 312.17 dollars later its in the post on its way. Also ordered a shiny new 3 blade prop to go with it for £60. All in im looking at around £300 for the parts which is ALOT for an old engine im sure will break in a few years, but when all the cables and steering are set for the engine and after bringing it back from the scrap heap once already i've grown fond of the old girl :
  15. Hi gary, I'd be more than happy to accept your offer , thank you. If you can pm me the address and whens best to come and pick up Thanks in advance Branden
  16. If the boats up and running I'll be heading to yarmouth that weekend as it'll be around my b-day. May have to swing along for a few hours to say hello. One thing though, isn't the Norfolk broads meet happening in Suffolk lol.m
  17. I've cleaned it down to the metal and theres no indication that it was ever splined the whole length. I really don't want to cut my losses and buy a new engine as this one was working so well. Pumps water perfectly, no problems with gears just spun the hub and is now useless I cant remove the gearcase retaining nut so even if i could get a new shaft i wouldn't be able to install it. Realistically i would only put £200 max into repairs. As far as getting a new engine a 15hp 4 stroke would be ideal for what i want, just a shame i can't afford one at the moment. It's a shame you can't buy outboards on a pay monthly basis I agree about there being some junk engines on ebay so id only buy one i could see running either in person or on a video.
  18. The angle grinder is safely hidden away now I went at it bit by bit with the hack saw and eventually got it all off . It turns out it was held on with something like liquid weld and was wedged onto a thick rubber sleeve. Looking at other prop shafts for my engine i cant help but notice that they have teeth the whole length of the viewable shaft and that mine only has 1cm. Im not sure if this means i wont be able to properly attach a new prop?
  19. Sods law on the timing. Thanks for the recommendarion to the website. Ill order a few when i next get payed.
  20. Hi everyone. I managed to borrow a puller off my neighbour and it didnt help. So i went at it with an angle grinder, which didnt help. Ive got the prop off but not the actual part of it which connects to the engine. Ive removed the whole lower unit and the plan is to take that to a proffessional too see if they can get the rest of the prop off with something hydraulic. Not very happy to say the least.
  21. Looks like i'll be soaking it in wd40 for a few days then, as I don't have access to a puller i'll get a couple of my hench friends to have a go at pulling it off. I was wary when hitting it as the block of wood had to sit on 1 of the 2 blades so i would of been hitting it uneven (hopefully this hasn't caused any damage). I'll keep you updated as to when i get it off and any possible damage. Thanks for the advice forumites.
  22. Hi happy jax, it's a mercury 200 20hp thunderbolt blue band. I'm using this link as my reference to parts http://www.marineengine.com/parts/mercu ... ete-page-2
  23. Hi everyone. After noticing someone has traded paint with my boat :/ I'm after a few cheap fenders to tie round the boat to add a little more protection. If anyone has any laying around in the norwich area, I'd be more than happy to come and collect. Thanks in advance Branden
  24. Hi everyone, My outboard has a spun hub so i need to remove the propeller. Only thing is i cant see how to remove it. As you can see in the photo there is no nut holding it on so i cant see how its even stayed on in the first place. Ive been hitting away with a block of wood, some rags and a hammer but it wont come off. Is there something holding it on that i havn't noticed? Thanks in advance Branden
  25. I'm happy to say my work has paid off and boat passed its bss today Updated insurance as well, just got to show new bss to ba and im sorted. My only issue is that I've only just realised i've put the appostrophe in the wrong place in the boats name on the bss and insurance. When i come to finally putting the name on the boat, would it cause any issues as the name on the boat will be spelt right but slightly different from the documents? I guess thats what i get for picking a weird name
