JennyMorgan
Was on a boat today when the owner referred to a 'painter', now I know that that is a mooring rope on a small boat. Anyway I decided to check and found out that it is the 'string at the front' in particular. Once it was an everyday term but now I rarely hear it used, or even use it myself which is a pity. Us boaters have a rich vocabulary available to us, as well as long standing traditions and customs. Have a peep at this lot: http://phrontistery.info/nautical.html There are only two ropes on a boat, a bolt rope and a bell rope, lots to learn. Then perhaps you'll tackle the Ashely Book of knots

MauriceMynah
Well I suppose I might bend on this as long as it goes without a hitch. Actually there aren't too many knots as such, leading me to wonder what the correct name is for the boat securing "lets keep the mooring post warm" knot! You know the one... sixteen round turns and eight hitches.
Polly
Oh easy, that's the comforter knot, deriving from the Victorian word for scarf or muffler. You only had to ask......
johnb
"Us boaters have a rich vocabulary" Yup, I've heard some of it directed towards me when I've made mess of something (in their opinion).
