"The points failure is the responsibility of Network Rail"

it appears as though you misread the article :clap

The splitting up of BR to different companies for rolling stock and track infrastructure makes blame and fair criticism very difficult now.

The train operator has no remit or responsibility for points failures.

It could now be likened to blaming Richardsons or Herbert Woods for boats grounding through lack of dredging......

It is also the responsibility of the train company to offer an alternative mode of transport, which clearly they didn't. Not a good place to leave passengers stranded, especially as the pub is closed. Hope that the train company makes a suitable contribution to the lifeboat.

In a previous life long ago, I was a CS&TE linesman. In those days of BR trains WOULD NOT be cancelled for a simple points failure, if it could not be quickly rectified, the said points would be clipped and trains hand signalled past by the pway, whilst we working to fix the fault. ....Far to easy these days to cancel a train at the drop of a hat.

Pleased to hear network rail have contributed. Personally I believe it's a disgrace that the lifeboat was called upon. Surely network rail has road access to this location. (Special permission from the land owner) if not it needs to be acquired.  These people should have been recovered by road at cost to network rail. Not at cost to a charity.
