AdnamsGirl
This arrived on YouTube this week .... an interesting bit of footage showing Horstead Mill working. It must have been taken shortly before it was destroyed by fire in 1963. The end of the film shows the still smouldering remains. Very sad. NorfolkNog
Thanks for sharing that Carol. A magnificent building and such a sad end indeed.
Vaughan
Wasn't that the mill fire that had something to do with the Kray twins, trying to put it out with paraffin?
AdnamsGirl
I hadn't heard that one Vaughan. I seem to remember reading that the fire actually occured on what was the coldest day of winter 1963. Carol
Vaughan
The Kray twins had a few dealings in Norfolk although I don't know much detail but at least one mill fire in those days was after the Krays had recently bought it, and later did well out of the insurance.
marshman
Vaughan - I think that was Briggate. Not sure it was the Krays 'cos they spent most of their time inside, but certainly it was a ne'er do well !!!!
AdnamsGirl
Yes, you are right, it seems it was Briggate. There is a lengthy piece about that fire on the Norfolk Mills page for Briggate here: http://www.norfolkmills.co.uk/Watermills/briggate.html Carol

Vaughan
I am glad my memory served me right about the Krays, who also had a bit of business in Neatishead, in those days. I don't think this was the only mill fire that they were involved in but as I said, I don't know all the details.
