Snowy Posted August 7, 2017 Posted August 7, 2017 Advice please on legal and safely passable navigation limits, we will be using our inflatable kayak so draft and air draft is not really an issue didnt want to head up river and find we are on private land etc I'm guessing at some point it must become private we have only ever been hirers so the areas we would like to explore are the rivers in question are The Wensum past Norwich Yacht Station and The Bure past Coltishall how far can we go ? TheQ Posted August 7, 2017 Posted August 7, 2017 The canal above Coltishall lock was formally abandoned in 1928 therefore I don't think you can officially paddle that one. The North Walsham and Dilham canal, was never legally shut down and there is restoration going on. The Canal above Swafield locks was sold off and is not navigable. The Waxham New cut, is a canal Built I believe, for a brickworks, and is navigable by big boats as far as Brograve, where it is blocked by a bridge, how far you can paddle beyond that I don't know. what the legality of the bridge blocking the way is, I don't know. LizG Posted August 7, 2017 Posted August 7, 2017 Canoes do go up the Bure above Coltishall Lock, there is portage point at Horstead but I don't know whether you can get beyond the next lock. The Canoe Man certainly does commercial trips beyond Coltishall http://www.thecanoeman.com/guidedcanoetrails.php Quote
ExMemberBobdog Posted August 7, 2017 Posted August 7, 2017 There's no problem paddling all the way from Coltishall lock to Buxton Mill. It's a bit tricky to get above Buxton Mill, you'd have to get out and carry the boat a fair way and not easy to find a place to put back in, but it's not impossible. Quote
