wooster
Hi, A question came to my mind this morning as I lay in bed after a night of disturbed sleep. How come, after hiring a few, I've never hired a boat where I have had to close the seacocks before examining the weed filter and yet as soon as I bought my first inboard diesel ( Elysian ) I had to remember to do this to avoid flooding the boat. No doubt there's a simple answer but ....
grendel
most hire boats will site the weed filter access above the water line for the very reason that hirers probably wont know to turn off the seacocks, so they design out the risk.
Vaughan
Most hire boats have a Broads type filter which consists of a long brass tube coming from the hull skin fitting (with seacock) which means the top of the tube is above the waterline outside. A tried and trusted method which means even if you drop the cap on the tube in the bilges, you still won't sink the boat and you will still get water through to the engine, without drawing air. wooster
Thank you both. Simple and obvious when you consider it but too much for my aged, sleep-deprived brain this morning 😀
MargeandParge
Nearly all the boats that have been built or modernised within the last 20years have a vetus or large strainer type mounted fairly high up and the pump draws the raw water from the seacock up a reinforced flexible pipe to it. ExSurveyor
My Topliner doesn't have a weed filter internally, it has a grill over the inlet externally.

Our boat has that as well as the strainer. Kindest Regards Marge and Parge
BroadAmbition
A pair of Vetus strainers, supplied by a pair of s/steel scoops with strainers through lever type raw water hull valves These replaced the original single brass tube with internal gauze Griff
