  1. Are you a PBO subscriber John?:naughty:

No, David and I haven't subscribed to PBO since we sold the Motor-Sailor (Friday Girl 2).

But to keep old cars (and old boats) going I had to become something of a Bodger (in its old fashioned meaning!) to keep them on the move. Also money was tight when the kids were young! :naughty::naughty::naughty:

I reckoned that with a bit of ingenuity, liberal application of Araldite (or my mig-welder) and a bit of luck, you could fix almost anything! I still do!

  2. Biggles, Hi

As Mike says you could try repairing the cable but I had a similar problem with Mary-Jane's Elan and I fixed it by using some of that curtain cable that you stretch between two eye-hooks.

Today you'll probably only be able to get it with white plastic covering but if you strip that off to the correct length you can then braze both ends (to strengthen them)and grind them to the square section you need. It worked for many thousands of miles until we sold the Elan!!!

It may sound a lot of bother but when you investigate the cost of an electronic one I think you might give it a go!

  3. Hello Royston , it is me Ramjet (from the lounge) I am just notice yours aviater picture and think mayhap you should changed it although you is put it on in good faith some peas might find it offending. Regs Ram

Ramkat, what are you going on about now? :norty::norty::norty:

David, ( and the rest of you Mods) please don't let this happen.......... :naughty::naughty: :naughty:

  4. Legalised robbery by the government, they are worse than loan sharks.

Why dont they just take every penny we have go,its getting close to it.

You obviously don't remember that back in '06 the EU told our government to put the VAT on red diesel up to our then 17.5% rate.

Scotch Brown, then Chancellor of the Exchequer, when questioned in Parliament, told an MP for the Thames Valley that he would never penalise the boating fraternity with this burden....

The next year he just went and added the Road Fuel Duty............ :naughty::naughty::naughty:

So you can't blame this Government for everything.....

  5. I just wonder how much the £1 in our pocket is worth now,you might get about 40p worth of fuel once the duty and taxes are taken out of it,also you have to bear in mind that £1 has already been taxed as part of your income.

    38p actually! :naughty::naughty::naughty:

(45p is Duty and 17p is VAT)

Makes you wonder, don't it? :cry:cry:cry

  6. The main problem, as I see it, about withholding tolls is that you can't then use your boat ( for those of us "lucky" enough to own one). If you add up moorings, insurance, maintenance, improvements and cost amortization, them the BA toll is a quite small percentage. In our case nearer 10% than 20%.

So to withhold toll fees is shooting yourself in the foot if you use your boat on a regular basis. I may be cynical but the fact that the toll runs from April to April reinforces this; April, May and June are pretty good months to go boating!

If someone can assure me that you can happily go boating without a licence and fear not prosecution then I will certainly consider the wishes of w44nty and Bill.

  7. I have a Friend who has been working on this bridge for absolutely ages. The first bearings they replaced didnt fit or were wrong, the next set failed quite quickly, would have been cheaper to replace the bridge with all the time and money casually thrown at it as its now cost more in conrtactors fees and failed exercises than to have built new

    Dan, Hi

Welcome to the NBN. This is certainly a most contentious first post!!! :naughty::naughty::naughty:

It is difficult to believe such incompetence exists, even with the railway company... words fail me... :cry:cry:cry

Although I'm sure others will find some to comment... :bow:bow:bow

  8. What a stunning set of photo`s to show just exactly how beatiful and rewarding the Broads are in winter. I can certainly see the reasoning behind many of the forum members keeping their boats afloat year round. Thanks for posting them Rod, i`l be thinking about them when i`m beavering away in our dirty dusty hanger tomorrow ................. GIT :lol::lol: . Have a great time, regards .................. Neil.

Rod, Rod, ROD??? Am I missing something Nigel??? :naughty::naughty::naughty:

    Col, Hi

I replied to this thread about an hour ago......... must have hit the wrong key?

We bought Friday Girl from Barnes Brinkcraft a year ago and I asked Matthew Thwaites that question. He said they'd never fitted them and hadn't ever had problems.. perhaps it's because Wroxham is fresh water and hire boats don't usually have shore-power fitted?

By the by, where was HJ11 last week when we passed Reedham?

  10. We left Bell's Marina, in Brundall, last Tuesday, for the last time. With the tidal range at Brundall and a fixed pontoon-mooring we had been forced to move to pastures new on a floating pontoon.

We had waited nearly a week while the gales abated (yes, I know, any MAN should be able to drive his boat in any wind conditions...) and Tuesday morning dawned bright, sunny and nigh-on calm! :clap:clap:clap

Off at 7o'clock on the dot and a beautiful run up to Reedham with the ebb under us.

Cantley with the rising sun looked truly magnificent!

The waiting pontoon at Reedham is finished........

There was no-one else on the river and the conditions were idyllic until we entered the New Cut... where even my sun-glasses weren't up to the job!

    post-508-136713796412_thumb.jpg

Even entering the Waveney it was still quite bright!

    post-508-13671379644_thumb.jpg

And then we came to Somerleyton!

    post-508-136713796466_thumb.jpg

After sorting out our new moorings we then continued to Oulton Broad for a few days...

Where some things were the same

    post-508-136713796757_thumb.jpg

    But some things are changing!

    post-508-136713796785_thumb.jpg

Estimated costs of £90,000 for all three buildings but the other two won't be started until next October..

    post-508-136713796811_thumb.jpg

So that concluded our first cruise this year and we'll be out and about on the Southern Rivers until our trip North in May. Hope to see you around!.
