  1. Well.. some progress today. All the broken studs are now out and even the one in the crankshaft pulley is now drilled out and re-tapped - many thanks to Robert for the loan of the angle drill. The old pump impeller had been rubbing against the block for some time so I think there will be quite a lot of cast iron dust around the cooling system. I guess all I can do is to hose through the best I can then fill with just water, run for a few hours then drain off again and replace with coolant Tomorrow ... hopefully.. touch wood..it's put all the new parts on time rgds Wayne
  2. Hopefully now got a full A4 list of parts coming via Prior Diesel - they have been very helpful sourcing the items. Had to have a lie down when I was told how much though Beans on toast for a month for us Even the little pipe - two banjos braised to some 5mm pipe - over 100 quid But all original Volvo and seeing as the rest of the boat is very original thought that was the best way to go. Now just need t0 get Witch Hazel on the bruises from putting my large frame into spaces too small for it regards Wayne
  3. Well I got the crud out - vigorus shaking seems to work. Eventually got the pump off now just got to get the cut off bolts out of the block Thanking the second bolt out of the crankshaft pulley I then rung the head off - I was taking it off to clean it but decided to do the other bolt back up again rather than open another can of worms - there's still five good ones and it's only running the alternator and water pump. There is also a little pipe about 5mm dia that runs from the top of the turbo back to the top of the thermostat housing - aparently that is because the turbo is higher than the tank. This part is now not stocked to I guess I will have to find some fittings and use rubber hose. That will be helpful anyway as the pipe runs under the intake manifold and I would have to take that off as well to fit a rigid pipe - the old one came through o.k - will a little extra help The water pump was totally shot and looks like it had been leaking for a long long time. regards Wayne
  4. Yes - you are right - looking at the schematic it is indeed an anode. thanks Wayne
  5. Hiya - the feed is fresh water (coolant). rgds Wayne
  6. Hi Jonathan It's a little pipe - about 6mm in dia and it goes from the thermostat hsg to the turbo. On top of all the other problems I have to take the heat exchanger apart. There is a drain plug on the bottom and when I undid it nothing came out. There was a plug of crud - so I poked it with a screwwdiver and rather than disintegrating and alling out the whole solid plug went inside regards Wayne
  7. O.K - so now geting all the parts ready for the service- Quite looking forward to having a go but I am a little stumped with chosing the oil. Obviously I could go to Vovlo ££££££'s. The book says 15W/40 to API CD - which apparently is an old spec for Compression Diesel. Searching the internet people seem to use various products ranging from the expensive to Tesco's own brand. What do you all use in diesels? thanks Wayne
  8. No,No,No - I mean't first time for with me in control and navigating on our boat The ride out in Crackerjack was most excellent Jonathan
  9. Hi Ian Would like to go but not sure if i will get "training "done in time - Tracy would like to overcome her nervousness and insists we go out with someone who knows what they are doing first time - which is fair enough. rgds Wayne
  10. Thank you Frank Now why the ... could I not find that? Thanks again Wayne
  11. As with Julz seen plenty of people sat in a tub in the reeds trying but never actually seen anyone pull anything out rgds Wayne
  12. OK guys - you got me - I will be having a got at the servicing myself - I cant find a service manual on line so I guess i gotta to to the volvo dealers. I will be ordering the sump sucker thingy as well. Wayne
  13. Thanks Adam I think that has clarified my thinking a little. My feeling is she wants to take pictures without the technical knowledge at this stage. I think she is going to need a reasonable range between close up and zoom as when there are not planning hulls whizzing by to capture she seems to like the wildlife stuff. I had already looked at Fuji FinePix S1500 which seems to fit the bill in terms of zoom, MP, frames per sec etc. It also looks like a "proper" camera which I think Kristie will like, but I will have a look around. Alternatively I could save the money and let her use my Canon AE1 Program Thanks again Wayne ...Oh and Maggot if you are reading this thread the above will only happen if you get your homework done and help around the house
  14. Hi all Since we have taken to the water my daughter has expressed an interest in photography (particularly after seeing some of Mrs Lucky's action shots) and has asked if she could have a camera for her 15th birthday in May. She is'nt bothered if it is new or secondhand so I was wondering - I am guessing this is the million dollar question - what would be a good starting place for her.- As far as budget is concerned I am thinking between £100 - 200. Thanks Wayne
  15. Hi all I am thinking of getting my engines serviced - they were done last season - alledgedly. I was wonder what does everyone else do? Do you service yourself or do you have somebody do them for you - if so who is reccomended in the area? rgds Wayne
  16. Thanks Mark - much appreciated. rgds Wayne
  17. Hi all Ran the engines today for 10 mins and all seemd o.k - I guess the "bowl" filter had filled itself up or it's going to wait until I am in the river before the engine conking out! Anyway the fuel line goes as follows: If I have to change the spin on after stiring the tank up would I an guessing I dont have to bleed ? Thanks Wayne
  18. Thanks Mark Will check them out. rgds Wayne
  19. Hi Mark Where did you find the best deal - Robert and I were discussing just these over a beer rgds Wayne
  20. Now you mention it that makes alot of sense - I'll pull it all out and see what is there. thanks Wayne
  21. Hi Mark The sludge was black although the diesel in the bowl looked a bit green Thanks for the warning on the crosland filters. best rgds Wayne
  22. Replacing the Danforth seems a reasonable plan - it will then fold up in the locker. Job for the weekend - find out how much chain there is.. Thanks Wayne
  23. Thanks for the quick reply. I think they are just water traps. There is a vent on the bottom and there were no elements inside - maybe there should be?? They are followed by quite a large crosland 592 spin on filter. I found an engine manual but it seemed to stop before the fuel "prepartaion" system. I'll spark them up tomorrow and see what happens. Thanks again Wayne
