  1. FYI Perkins 4108 , that pipe is pushed into what I would call the bell housing
  2. From the photo above, the pipe you see exiting goes to a catch tank that’s been made from a 5 l oil can, beneath it are two further holes which appear to have bolts in them but they are not tight,I’ve made no attempt to investigate further until I’ve a better idea of why there is oil there. rear main perhaps
  3. Now the bilge is clean(ish) it became apparent that I have an engine oil leak,
  4. The fuel lift pump was also wet with diesel,a quick spanner check on the unions has hopefully sorted the fuel leak ,I cleaned the area and all seems ok.
  5. I guess most of you have been here! today was my 1st day onboard without distractions, number 1 job was to clean the engine bilge as it had a few inches of hhhmmmmm, the surveyer thought it was ATF, I correctly thought it was red diesel and water. 1/2 pack of cheap nappies and a lot of grovelling had it all soaked up. once everything was a bit cleaner I ran the engine for a while to see what was what. 1st issue was the raw water pump had a steady drip,so I guess that accounts for most of the water. I also noticed some weeping from the port side thermostat housing and exhaust gasket.
  6. The mount/bearer is not very heavily “glassed “ in, im guessing the ( what looks like) mahogany has just shrunk a bit over the 40 plus years. I think I’ll start a new thread in the correct section for my restoration/repairs/upgrades as there’s a fair few jobs to attend to.
  7. Good news tho, live got the d4 eberspatcher running, the boats been on mains hookup for years so not much use for the independent systems, after a dozen or so start ups the blown air is running with a lot less smoke. last night was cold, brrrrrr
  8. I’m sat aboard,as I type, marina has excellent WiFi. as much as I’d like to go for a cruise, I’ve some jobs to do,not easy with a small Norfolk terrier. so he’s heading home tomorrow with the good lady, two days to get to grips with things, main problem is the propshaft centre bearing needs some tlc the wooden bearer is loose in the hull ,only by about 1 mm but once the drive is loaded it’s moving around ,so I’ve got to chop off the old fibreglass and refix it. plus a lot of cleaning under the decks, 40 years of muck, im a bit OCD,I restore classic motorcycles,I ,unfortunately need spotless. lol, might take a while
  9. Well, it’s bought and paid for, needs a few bits doing to get the the survey up to spec, tomorrow will be first time on board, lots to do!
  10. Our last couple of times hiring on the northern broads didn’t work well with the tides so no attempt was made to go across breydon. last year we hired on the southern broads and again the tides were against us and the high airdraft of the flybridge boat but decided to go for a looksee, around 1/2 way across, pushing against the tide an alarm sounded from the inside helm(we were on the fly)and the engine cut out. In the time it took me to get inside the boat, assess the gauges and restart the engine we were already heading for the outer reaches of the NAV channel, luckily the motor restarted without issue, the temp was a bit high but I have no idea if there was a safety cut out fitted as it didn’t misbehave at all for the rest of the hire. my point being,if there had been a more serious issue, with no propulsion, we would probably been in a bit of trouble ourselves, It’s easy to be critical of hirers and hire boats but stuff happens, and it happens quickly, if they suffered mechanical issues, with the number of people on board it is highly unlikely to have been a calm and measured response to the immediate problems at hand,
  11. Playing devils advocate, maybe someone has bought it ,ex hire and is relocating it? if it has gone out on hire like that, the whole operation from the top to the lower ranks are responsible. if I were presented with that for my holiday I’d be turning straight around for a long disappointed drive home
  12. Could someone local machine one up on a lathe or is it more complex than that?
  13. I’d consider a hop across the wash to Boston, but Great Yarmouth ,hmmmm not sure I’m that brave
  14. Assuming we buy the boat it will be staying on the gt Ouse for at least a year ,firstly because I think we will have to commit to a berth ,secondly I think I’d like to explore the river before spending on transport etc. And the marina is only an hour away from home so it makes a lot of sense to stay put.
  15. If all goes to plan next Monday (lift and survey) I’ll be at Jones boatyard with a Broom 30
  16. Seems a bit unnecessary to me,I guess the smaller rivers will be out of bounds, and will be impossible to moor peak season im thinking I’m lucky my hopefully new to me boat is currently on the great Ouse ,I’ll just do battle with 15 tonne steel narrow boats
  17. That is a big boat, no wonder the moorings get busy with these behemoths
  18. Bit of a thread hyjack , I have 2x empty 4.5kg butane cylinders (calor) if anyone needs some. pm if of interest
  19. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/175234471390?hash=item28ccc9d5de:g:5pkAAOSwC1xiL8rL
  20. I’ll add to the list of upgrades, might not be as straightforward as that tho, I think a catch tray under the shower will need to be fabricated, all doable.
  21. So the installation is key to safe operation on gas,if there is no flue it needs to come out ? survey is a week next Monday,I’ll start a list
  22. So the gas fridge may not be such a bad thing, is there a risk of CO build up?
  23. I believe the shower does just go into the bilge , why do I need to be concerned
  24. Hmm ,I’m tempted to upgrade , I’ll take a really good look on the installation side of things when the survey is done, if necessary I’ll bump new fridge to the top of the job list.
