  1. The trouble with the pool in Horning is that the changing rooms are tiny and right next to the toilets. You have to walk through the cafe to get to and from the pool leading to a wet cafe floor and unless you are on a hire boat you have to pay to moor.

  2. Twice- first time moored on Salhouse an my 6 month old ha a raging temp and shivers. Rang NHS Direct and within 45 mins Doctor was onboard.

Second time-latest child had developed a proper chesty cough, rang the Doctors in Hoveton about 2pm and had an appoint for 4pm-quicker than I would have at home.

  3. I have filled up at Boulters before and still do occasionally but it can be a real bugger to get into sometimes, particularly if somebody else is already at the pump.

I often just use Ferry Marina for ease and last time found them not much more expensive than Boulters and or a few extra quid far easier!

  4. My real concern is not so much with what happened on this trip but to work out if cold weather cruising with the family is really possible.

If you have to turn off the heating ovenight when the air temperature is below zero then a hire boat gets very cold,

especially for youngsters who are not used to, or really equipped for, freezing temperatures?

We found the night of the 31st of March very cold. Fortunately we were on shore power and had a 2kw + 800w electric radiators running in the evening. It was just enough to keep Thunders saloon warm enough. Any colder and we would have had to put the onboard heater on.

We left the 800watt rad going over night to keep the boys cabin warm and set the 2kw radiator to come on at 6am. However I had managed to set it to also switch of at 6am! When we woke up about 7am it was freezing! I could see my breath in the cabin! Did not take long to warm up with the diesel heater running as well.

My own personal opinion is that cold weather cruising is possible but shore power is a must.

  5. I have no idea how my post above is showing as being posted yesterday as I am sure I wrote it last year but never mind.....

    Neil,

There is currently no 4%/2 week shares for sale in Thunder there are only 8% (4 week share) for sale. They are priced at £8k. You would need to speak to BCBM to see if they would split the shares for sale as they are managing he sale from the previous owner.

The 8% share in Evening Shadow shown on the BCBM website is on the verge of being sold.

My own personal view is that Thunder is a big boat for two people, particularly as there is currently no now thruster although the current owners do want one-just waiting for more owners to share the cost!

If it is the annual costs that you are worried about there is an 8% share for sale in Goosander (31ft Alpha) for £5k. She is self managed and being a smaller boat the annual costs would be £700 according to the BCBM website

  6. Yep that was us onboard Thunder. That was me struggling with the two young children!

There really is no catch, you buy your share and pay your portion of the running costs. We own a 4% share in Thunder so get two weeks a year. After buying the share we pay about £600 per year. We had a week in August and that week in September. To hire the same style of boat from Ferry Marina would have cost us £1600 in August and £1200 In Sept plus all the normal hiring extras. Its not rocket science!

You need to view it as purely a holiday boat-you cant just go when you want or leave anything on the Boat.

  7. Nothing yet! But if the Thunder one prices successful next week it will be my suggestion to replace it with the one from Brian Wards. This is also the one used by Moonlight Shadow who also report favourably.

I saw your post above and we don't use a booster but the aerial is on a pole from the centre cockpit so naturally sits high which must help.

  8. We have used that company for the aerial onboard Evening Shadow and they are very helpful but one word of warning about the DM log Periodic they recommend-it is rather long which makes storing difficult. It worked well to begin with (analogue days) but a couple of years later it is a bit battered and bruised as the fins get bent etc and this certainly impaired its performance. I have not used it since the digital switchover so don't know how it performs now. I also see they now do a shorter version which might be a better bet.
