Mystery donor secures WW2 Bomber Command memorial spire

Recommended Posts

Hello

Lovely to see.  Although I did my RAF service long after these brave men did theirs.  I have always felt that they were forgotten and blamed for doing something that was their job and what they were ordered to.  The politicians have a lot to answer for!

Hopefully the vandals won't get to this marvellous monument and treat it with the respect it deserves.  In Bulford we had a WW1 bronze statue to recognise the work of all the Wiltshire soldiers during that time.  It was stolen and later found in a local scrap yard having been cut up and sold.

My military service was between 1975 and 1987, with only one proper tour in an operational station (Leuchars) - Akrotiri and Upavon were the other two.

Sue. I know Canwick Hill well, where the monument will be erected. Its a nice area, and I don't think vandals will be attracted to it.

I know that many monuments/plaques have been stolen for scrap. Its become harder now to sell metals. The scrap yards are far better regulated than they were.

I am amazed that there are low life out they who do vandalise such things as war memorials, and cemeteries. Times  we live in!!
