Another turn of the century picture, this time Mills Staithe, Ranworth. Now, I don't know Mills Staithe, do you?

A new name to me that is. I wonder if anywhere near the right hand side as you enter Malthouse Broad near the Nature area? I am sure someone will know?

I expect a lot of people have tried Googling it like me, and found the coloured version of Pater's pic, but still no specific detail of exactly where it is on the Broad.

 

It's even on this German "Lexikus" website !

Maybe it was where Cator's mooring dykes are now....

I am guessing here but the cut that is on the right of the main staithe, where there are private moorings. I do know that the biggish thatched house that stands there was something to do with the Mills family, of Mills and Reeve the Norwich solicitors. I knew the late Peter Mills whose family owned at one time the bits of land around the broad the the Cators didn't own. He was the son of the Mills that would have owned in the period of the photo.

Having given this some more thought it could be here, Peter Mills built himself a house at the head of this dyke.

It is the first dyke on the right going in to Malthouse. The bridge and boathouse are still there, as is Peter Mill's house. Alfie runs a boat from there acrosst to collect from the island.

Unusually for me I keep having more thoughts on this and I think I am right in saying that until some time in the 1980s Peter actually owned these moorings selling them to the Cator family during this period. So this could be it, although I have never heard them called Mills staithe.

It was Peter who managed the moorings still when we started at Ranworth.

I'm fairly certain that this is Ranworth, at a time when harvesting weeds was not frowned upon, early 1900's again.

Sailing up Ranworth Dyke. The half decker on the right might have been on Oulton Broad until a few years ago. That unusual transom is very similar to a boat that used to be kept in the dinghy park there.

The last two pictures from JM, I think were taken on the same day, despite one 'being coloured in' - just that yacht in the background has started to set sail. Same half decker in foreground.........and the reed lighter has just got a bit further.
