I've always wondered what a trim tab actually does.

We’re not actually talking about trim tabs Martin, rather leg trim which is the bit like an outboard that can be adjusted to alter the angle of thrust to suit varying conditions.

Trim tabs basically do a similar job to ailerons on an aircraft, they are adjustable planes fitted to the transom and are an extension of the hull length. They are really designed to trim lateral angle but can be (and often are) used to help the bow climb over the hump or plane at lower speeds on a slightly underpowered boat or adjust the planing angle on a shaft drive boat.

just read the manual! the fault code it displays, red triangle with exclamation mark and continuous alarm is the shallow water alarm, or depth warning according to the manual

That could be going off all the time on the Broads ..... :naughty::oops::oops:

But Poppy,

If he has the manual he can now work out how to reset it to a shallow enough depth to stop it going off all the time. ;)

But thinking back didn't he admit touching the bottom in the Ant bringing her back when he picked here up?

I don't remember any comments about alarms going off then. So what depth is it actually set to.... :naughty:

this is where we go back to inexperience of our new boat and rtfm syndrome when the alarm went off on the Ant we assumed it was because we had dragged up some mud into the weed filter, now it seems to be because we were in shallow water or out of trim, we stopped cleaned the weed filter that had a little mud in the bottom not enough to block it completely, but some small lumps of mud, adjusted the trim and the alarm went off so the asumption was we had dragged some mud up and cleaning the filter had rectified it when actually it seems that by adjusting the trim or drifting into deeper water turned the alarm off

the biggest relief is that its more likely to be operator error rather than something nasty happening downstairs in the expensive bit! :party2:

Joking apart, glad to see it has all worked out Dave.

Now all you have to do is work through that teething problems list you posted and enjoy having the new boat.

Of course with your new retractable arch you will soon find out how the :Sailing feel when there is yet another bridge coming up! But at least you can ask yourself it worth putting it up again or shall we leave it down until we're past Acle?

The sailing guys have to keep putting it up and taking it down!

Is it fixed now? Can I come out of hiding. Only just seen this post honest!!

If you give me the serial number off the engine I can get someone to take a look and see if there's any history. Just so you know the engine has EVC-MC, Electronic Vessel Control - Mechanical controls, D4 and above have electronic controls. It has not got the full electronic package as the engine is from the V70 D5 car and it would have cost a fortune to fully convert it.

As David said the trip computer, auto trim etc can be expensive and some of the early EVC engines are not compatible.

There is a special tool called Vodia but so far only VP dealers and some boat dealers are able to use and keep it up to date. As someone said Pete Saunders who's now at Lowestoft or French Marine at Rackheath can help if you need someone Volvo.

Hi Neil

We hope its just a trim warning or depth warning, we have downloaded and read the owners manual at last and the fault code says it depth warning, triangle and exclamation mark flashing red and the continuous audible alarm, we are looking for an evc manual to find out what we can acess without the tablet.

When the alarm went off, (each time we accellerated the bow wrose up then the alarm went off) we did not have a manual or a clue what it could be so we took the usual precautions of assuming something catestrophic was iminent and shut off.

We are not down again for a fortnight but I would really like to take you up on your offer of checking the engine history, it was only fitted in 2004 and is only showing 230 hours, we have no history at all other than the receipt for it and it fitting at St Olaves (£15,000) so we are having a 200 hour service as 200 hours seems to be the normal service interval as the oil is definately more that 30 hour old so we suspect it may never have had one. that said its runs lovely!
