You need to leave them a bit loose; how much depends on the tidal range.  Basically, as the flow pushes your boat, all the others are pushed in the same direction.  As the direction changes, everyone else changes too.  On the South coast, you have to leave a good deal of slack or you finish hanging!

     

    The springs stop your boat from sitting on the one next to you.

     

    Ask me how I know!

  2. Thick bow and stern lines both sides, attached to cleats and coiled, held by life-ring brackets on the guardrail.  

     

    Length: 1.5 time the boat length.  

     

    Use: bow/stern line then back to centre cleat as springs.  Quick, easy, secure. 

     

    Removed and kept in lockers when at sea..!

  3. Quite right Peter.  Anyone with a few quid can go and buy a boat and deal with the consequences - both their own, and on others.

     

    Should basic training be mandatory for boat OWNERS?  Should the level of training have to increase with power/size of vessel?  Does it work on the continent?

     

    Powerboat 2?

    Day skipper?

    Helmsman?

    CEVNI?

  4. Interesting post.  I suspect you'd take some flak for that on the other side!

     

    You're right though.  We managed to turn up at a solid line of dinghies the other sunday, one of them called out to us if we would mind waiting 30 seconds as they were about to start the race.  Of course we said yes and had no issue at all.  

     

    On the flip side, lots of times we have had people desperately trying to board our boat via the bow/side/amidships by ramming.  Not racing, not pushed for space, some them just stunning acts.  

     

    We are a largish motor boat and have reasonable control.  That said, when we have come to a halt, hugging the right hand bank out of respect for the rules of the river, why oh why do some people have to force us into the trees.  

     

    We try to do the right thing, but really, some of them are so bloody-minded and it is largely unnecessary.  I try timing an acceleration to coincide with an upcoming tack or gybe and still get stared at.  If I stay in the same place I get stared at.

     

    'Thanks' wouldn't go amiss.  I have sailed all my life, largely racing on the Thames, and have had to pick my way through various fleets.

  6. Still recommend a tracker.  I have one.  Text it, and it will give you exact coordinates of where it is.  Ring fence it, and it will let you know if it is moved outside this zone.  If it's moved, it will let you know.

     

    Difficult to see it too.

  7. Hmm interesting.  

     

    I bought a new 8hp Mariner and it was superb.  It was sunk at one stage for a week and after a few oil changes and a bit of WD40 it ran perfectly.

     

    Then I bought a rib which had a 15hp Hidea on the back, approx 6 months old.  It was a bag of bones.  The recoil kept breaking, it shook so badly I ended up with a 'dead' hand after ten minutes of holding it, the choke lever detached itself regularly.  Norfolk Marine repaired it under warrantee and then it broke again.  I sold it in the end and warned the new owners of it's reliability issues but they were happy enough.  I was told it was a Chinese brand, which used old Yamaha tooling.  It seemed to use plastic instead of metal and was just not up to the job.

     

    I replaced it with an 18-month old 15hp Mariner which starts first pull every time, even after winter.  Quiet, smooth, powerful, happy at low revs.  Perfect.

  8. We go up as far as the weir once a year by rib.  Best to go during the closed fishing season - otherwise there are a surprising number of fishermen and they get a bit snotty even if you stick to the opposite bank.

     

    Best way to see Norwich - fascinating architecture and oodles of history.

  9. Some people do not want to wave, and I respect their choice.  They continue looking forwards or to the other side.  It's the ones who just stare back that I mutter to myself about!
