  1. Ah ha, Jack! Memory is an age thing, isn't it? What the heck made me think it was Roger? Must have been the comment about Muffin the Mule, poor, bow legged creature. Tele moments for me include the first airing of Dr Who, think I was a tad scared of that one at the time but I have been a fan ever since. Whacko, was it Jimmy Edwards? Bloke with a massive mustache and a penchant for corporal punishment. With Billy Bunter as well the Director General at the BBC must have been an iffy character back then! Can't understand why we don't see repeats in these enlightened times! Fanny Craddock and the cooking wine, one for her and one for the pot. Never actually saw her knocking it back but we did notice the change in her manner and delivery as the program progressed, lovely character! Ivor the Engine, when I was at art school I did the smoke, cotton wool, belching out of the chimney for one episode, great fun. Quatermass, now that was scary stuff, at the time. Have since watched several repeats, great fan I am! We first had TV for the Coronation, a huge box thing which projected a grainy, flickering image onto a screen, been a fan ever since. Now it's In the Night Garden with my grandson! Glad to see that the venerable Fanny escaped the censor's attention!
  2. Some folk live in hope! Griff, please pass on my deepest sympathies to your crew!!
  3. Viking, three things are always worth carrying, a VHF handset, a mobile phone and a whistle. With the first two, if one doesn't work then the other will. I have a none too special VHF and if I can't raise Bridge control at Lowestoft, Reedham or Somerleyton when down South then there is a fair bet that someone out there will be listening. The mobile phone is pretty good although full cover is not guaranteed. The whistle, well a one legged friend of mine put me onto that one, he's dead now but he sailed a Merlin Rocket racing dinghy and of his own admission he was a hobbling health risk, more than once his whistle came in handy when he got into a bit of a pickle. Sensible is good, but it's not always so much fun. Foolhardy is not to be recommend but where there is a will there is often a way. Enjoy it while you can!
  4. Last resort Charlie. In the meantime gaffa tape and cable ties should take up any slack in the system. Just don't overload it though!
  5. Billy Bunter, when caning fat bottomed boys in tight shorts was seen as funny. Roger Hargreaves. Dixon of Dock Green, evenin all! London to Brighton in four minutes by train.
  6. Good advice on how not to have a dirty bottom. Save a fortune too!
  7. They were the days, when 'Weed' was acceptable!
  8. Mere youngsters! I well remember Dick Barton, Dan Dare & Digby and Horrace Batchellor on Radio Luxembourg. Then there was Sooty & Sweep and Archie Andrews, the ventriloquists dummy, on the Light Program.
  9. I was out at six this morning, bream being very accomodating, didn't see her go by, being engrossed in my float! Not a good wind for Albion going North at the moment, should have gone yesterday when we had a South Easterly.
  10. Thanks, Andy, sorry but more than I would wish to pay for a knockabout angling boat although I'm sure that she's worth it. With your position on the river I'm really surprised that there is not the demand, especially in the winter.
  11. Passion For Angling is available on DVD, quality stuff! http://www.passionforangling.info/order.html
  12. Gareth, glad that you like it, probably the best angling series ever. Certainly regarded as a true classic by many anglers.
  13. A protective layer over the gel can't be a bad thing. Can't argue with that, no gel under the waterline with epoxy direct to the resin is another option. I doubt that antifouling is impervious to water. Where's Strow when you want him, don't doubt that he would know what's best!
  14. That Suffolk built Norfolk Wherry 'Albion' is laying at Oulton Yacht Station tonight and apparently she's leaving tomorrow. If she's hoping to catch the tide at Yarmouth then she'll need to be away fairly sharpish in the morning. Keep your eyes open, cameras ready!
  15. I have every intention in visiting by foot and during the day sailing either River Cruiser Class 150 or Jenny Morgan, as per my avatar. See you on the water folks, I hope.
  16. Boring, never! Okay, so there is a lack of overcrowding, stag parties, pirates and grockels in kiss-me-quick hats but that aside the South has space, some of the finest pubs and restaurants on the Broads, quick access to the sea, Norwich, Beccles, Somerleyton Hall and Burgh Castle for day trips, Geldeston Locks, great fishing, the best sailing rivers on the Broads, stacks of wildlife in amongst the reeds, boring the South Rivers are not, in my sincere and honest opinion. The only thing better up North than down South is above Potter Bridge.
  17. We can then all turn up! I can bring a barbie, John, how about bringing the ale, Anyone the burgers or the music? Blow the fishing, an impromptu forum meet! Best bring some fizz for the kids.
  18. Andy, what sort of price. Excellent boat for angling by the way. Giving up on hiring to anglers, I don't blame you! You need to be up at the crack of dawn and most anglers I know leave boats a tad grubby, what with mud & groundbait, my wife is always on at me to scrub our boat out, hence my interest in yours. Are you sure about the trailer?
  19. Nothing wrong with Hempel Broads, good stuff, Suits me, when it's on offer, lasts for three seasons on my Drascombe with the occasional scrub, I like a clean bottom! Easily done with a scrub brush mounted on the side rather than the end of a pole, I take her into the shallows, chest waders on, job done. There are yards that charge almost as much as Andy, just for slipping. Another comparable anti-fouling is that from the Witham Paint Company at Lowestoft, their marine gloss is superb by the way. Seems to me that Andy's price is pretty fair.
  20. Best part of three hundred, or even four hundred & fifty smackers to slap on fifty quid's worth of paint, wow!
  21. I note that Freedom is £12.00 a foot. Don't know if that includes slipping. If I have read his pictures correctly he lifts on a cradle. Could always 'run aground' on Breydon and do it yourself.
  22. Robin's boatyard on the Brooke Industrial site, Lake Lothing. Superb and sensible prices. Robin allows DIY so off to the nearby Whitham Paint Works, excellent product, costs about £50.00 to do a 30 footer in my experience. You should be able to lift out, wash and paint and be back in within six hours. Phone Robin on 01502 512973 0r 07730463955 Unit 2B Brook Business Park, Heath Road, Lowestoft NR33 9LZ Robin is an ace bloke to do business with.
  23. Don't suppose any of us older anglers need reminding about 'Passion' but for people who don't understand angling or are new to the sport then this might help, when you have 49 minutes to spare!
  24. Regarding ledgering and bite indication, a case of fishing with tight line and watching the tip of the rod. Today ledgering has taken second place to feeder fishing using a quiver tip rod. Brilliant for river fishing and I'm sure that if search for feeder fishing, as with float fishing, on U-Tube you'll find the information that you need. For beginners I really would advocate float fishing on the Broads rather than the rivers. Easy fishing and there is something quite fascinating about watching a float. As for tackle, I went to a carboot sale yesterday, got a Grice & Young center pin for a fiver, real Crabtree stuff. It looked a mess but Grice & Young reels are near bomb proof, I knew that under the grime & seized bits there would be a hidden gem! Cleaned it up, wobble free, spins a treat, more than well pleased. On top of that I also bought a Daiwa Lightning match rod for £7.50, good to use right away and surprisingly good for a fortyish year old. £12.50 for a good rod & reel, amazing value! I certainly didn't need any new tackle but I went out with my new rod & reel this morning, an absolute joy to use and own. Perhaps I'll dig out my porcupine floats and go the whole hog!
