  1. http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2060778.m570.l1313.TR0.TRC0.H0.XThe+Art+of+Coarse+Sailing&_nkw=The+Art+of+Coarse+Sailing&_sacat=0 If I were to find myself stranded in the privy on a distant desert island then this would be my first book of choice, by a nautical mile. The spirit of the Broads at it's very best!
  2. The recent boat fire aboard a well past its end of life due date up on the Ant is probably as good an example as any as to why the Authority is so against live-aboards.
  3. More news and a call for help: http://www.edp24.co.uk/news/owners_of_burnt_out_sutton_staithe_boat_homeless_after_blaze_1_3888484
  4. Bottled water for drinking and cooking, river water is very clear at this time of year, perfectly good for washing, so who needs hoses?
  5. I had refrained from mentioning St Olave's Marina but it is a fact that there are several liveaboards there, not least the narrow boats in the Cut. I agree entirely with Hylander about the security that these folk offer plus, I must add, is the general helpfulness and friendliness that I've received from the liveaboards at Oulton Broad for example.
  6. I read in the Readers Digest that the average man spends three months of his life shaving, thinking that a total waste of three months I grew a beard, that was over fifty years ago. Not sure what I've done with those three months though!
  7. The Waveney River Centre at Burgh St Peter has a few long term residential boaters moored in its marina.
  8. Another turn of the century picture, this time Mills Staithe, Ranworth. Now, I don't know Mills Staithe, do you?
  9. Great loss, Brian was a personal friend and business associate from back when I held the licence at the Waveney Inn. Judy Potter & the family are still the same so I don't see things changing, just that Brian's personal touch won't be there.
  10. If that really is the case, Doug, then it is the toll payer, you and me, who will be picking up the tab.
  11. Although 'Spray' is pretty near original we no longer have cotton sails, manila ropes, lead based paint, tar paint on the bottom or painted canvas on the decks so Dave's point is perfectly relevant. However I doubt that we shall be bermudan rigging her or having a carbon mast! It is true though that most Broads boats progress.
  12. Us oldies are quite good at keeping warm in the winter
  13. So a house-boat doesn't need a BSS, amazing!
  14. The boat that I thought it was, great loss to someone. Thanks for the pictures, Mark.
  15. Skip, I think that you are right. Remember the one at YH, passed her several times.
  16. Why buy baubles to hang in a beard when it's so easy to adorn said embellishment with marmalade, tomato sauce, porridge etc at no extra cost?
  17. 1980, a Richardsons boat at a time when Clive was just a very small boy! Quality bit of quay-heading.
  18. This boat does look familiar. Got a feeling that she'd become a live-aboard.
  19. Got a feeling that her name is, or was, Enchantress. Big, wide bowed bath tub, at one time a blue hull.
  20. Josh, if you haven't done so already have a peep at Craig's database: http://www.broads.org.uk/wiki/index.php5?title=Main_Page We are now in an age of 'blogs', an excellent innovation! Really a case of linking the two, perhaps having a chat with Craig & suggesting the addition of links from database to the relevant blogs is the way forward. By the way, good to see you becoming involved in the wider forum. Snapdragons, I know them well, I used to skipper one as a charter boat, a l o n g time ago now!
  21. 1920's? This time, still on the Waveney, this time at Wortwell.
  22. Another interesting old picture of Acle Regatta. Is that the barrel of the starting gun on the bottom right?
  23. My daughter has a 1908 built Broads cruiser, the National Register of Historic Vessels people have invited her to register her boat as they consider her an interesting development in Broads boat design. It's nice to think that she is but the inspiration to have her included on the list is hardly overpowering. On the Broads old boats are hardly rare so perhaps such lists are seen as nothing special, rightly or wrongly.
