  1. I do phone regularly asking if they need anything, but they keep saying they dont (you know what some older folk are like, fiercely independent). I will give them a ring and ask what their stocks are like, if they are getting low I will pop over and either get some shopping for them or take my dad shopping (as he insists I cant choose the right bag of porridge oats from a stack of 50 bags).
  2. it could be argued that it is, but with my sister just around the corner - ?? Though she is already doing some shopping for them and several other elderly neighbours, so cant always carry the heavier bits.
  3. I would welcome a relaxation of the restrictions, if only to drive the 15 miles to visit my parents who are both in their eighties now, and make sure they have everything then need. I am fortunate that my sister lives in the same road as them, but she doesnt have a car, so isnt able to do a heavy shop. the last time we managed to do a heavy shop (all the things too heavy to carry without a car) was the weekend before lockdown, so they are probably down to reserves now (they had a reasonable stock of most things as they stock up for winter in case they cant get out for a month or two.)
  4. I think I may have found a solution, luckily I made the rails overlap the stern, though I could wish I had left one a bit longer, so I added a block to that excess rail, spaced so it will trap the ends of the stern rubbing rail, this will be trimmed off once the rail is glued.
  5. so as it was getting dark, and i had a general idea where the boot topping and antifoul lines were going to be from model #1 i fired up the laser level and ran the lines down one side of the model, marking light pencil marks to show the line.
  6. making a mould from the hull was considered, but since i have no experience with making fibreglass moulds and was only making 2 models, it was easier to just make the two hulls from timber.
  7. 178 miles would just about do it for me to Marthams or 160 to Oulton Broad and Water Rail
  8. to be fair marshman, much as i wouldnt like it, that would be my proposal too, say start with 20 miles, then extend further as long as the new cases dont escalate.
  9. of course they failed miserably, you could understand every word.
  10. my daughter bought a bike, it sits in the hall so it wont go rusty, and its been used regularly (once is regular isnt it).
  11. thats why i built model #1 but i am now starting to get to areas not covered on model #1 yet. i have next to figure how to clamp the ends of the stern rubbing rail
  12. ok so i couldnt sit around and do nothing, so i have been adding the rubbing strakes to the sides on the model
  13. yes, its on the side of the boat. Of course once you have figured out how to do it, its easy, so after careful measurements the second side was added.
  14. well, the wooden clamps were no better than the others i had, so with two of those and one wood clamp the rubbing strip was clamped in place, it was then drilled for a tight fit on a 0.8mm stainless pin (a 0.7mm drilled hole through wood is perfect, ) then once the pins were in, they held it in place, the wood was eased up 1/4" off the surface, glue applied, then reseated, the backs of the pins were bent over to stop them pulling through, the only place a clamp was required was to hold the front (at the point of most twist) next job, to get the other side matching perfectly.
  15. So not able to just sit around doing nothing today, i went out to work on the model, fitting the rubbing strakes is my goal, hmm, after trying with my 2 deepest clamps i have found a problem, clamping these down. ok so i need some deeper clamps, i could 3d print some, but i dont know if they will be strong enough, wooden clamps, yes thats doable, i have some wooden threaded rod handy, so i have set about making some rough and ready clamps.
  16. Day 20, Tuesday Well its here, the last day of furlough, so do I take a day off and relax around the house doing nothing, or will I get easily bored with that and do something? we shall see.
