sat outside chatting to a local, who was an absolute joy

We talked very fondly of Sean Carr former lead singer of Death Valley Screamers who made Ludham his home and was a well known local who had strong links with Ukraine.

    He certainly was a character

  2. Well we made our way up to the Kings Arms around 2.15 as we knew our son had booked a table for 2.30 and we were not disappointed.

Julie had the carvery and I went for the Southern fried chicken and chips, although if I am honest I was a little disappointed with my meal as the fried chicken wasn't crispy but the batter was quite soft and stodgy.

But this may have been a one off and it still tasted fantastic.

Julie loved her meal, and our son had also provided a bottle of Pinot Grigio for us which was a nice touch.

We finished off our meal with a gin and tonic sat outside chatting to a local, who was an absolute joy, though sadly his house and workshop had burnt down. We wish him and his family well with the rebuild.

We then made our way back to the staithe, but when I switched the heating on.....nothing!

    Panic.....annoyance...... frustration.....

Then WhatsApp to @Mouldy and @YnysMon and we figure out it's a pipe which has come away from the housing which provides the heat to the saloon.

Floor boards lifted, huff and puff...done! The pipe is now reconnected.

switch the heating on...fingers crossed...yes!!!! We have heat!

Open another bottle of wine...look out the windows...and chill......

You can't beat the Norfolk Broads

  3. This Mothers Day, Sunday morning we were awoken by Roxy nudging us to say she needs to go out!!!

So the boat heater was put on, we got dressed, popped the kettle on and took both dogs for their first leg stretch of the day.

Then back to MS for our first brew of the day.

We later took the dogs on the circular walk, up to the church and back via the lower road.

It was a lovely morning for a stroll, although there was more of a chill in the air than yesterday, but at least it was dry.

Yogi does like to pose for a picture, whilst Roxy prefers the nose to the ground look!

We gave MS a morning clean, inside and out, before a light breakfast of toast with jam.

    DSC_0262.thumb.JPG.bda7bbf24c5c58805672842d82d13eb8.JPG

MS is looking good and the new engine, gearbox, toilet seals and upgraded upholstery have all added to making her a nice boat on the water, but also nice boat to use.

I brought my firestick with me as we are F1 fans (attended both Zandvoort and Silverstone last year) so it was good to see the new TV and firestick using my phone as a hotspot, worked a treat for qualifying last night. Hoping for the same this evening for the race!

As we readied for the off from Ranworth, Yogi decided to take the helm.

    DSC_0263.thumb.JPG.0dd0fb795b80a5edfdd8397a1f6adc7e.JPG

I made a few more advice videos for the syndicate to help new members understand certain elements and later we will be taking lots of measurements in the galley as we plan to do a complete refit in the future.

We left Ranworth around 10am with our destination Womack Water, and stupidly I decided not to top up with water as I thought I would do it at Womack only to later find the hose has been removed!! DOH!

DSC_0264.thumb.JPG.064fa96ab56c7d3889ce934aec1fced3.JPGThere  was plenty room as we left and we again "bimbled" down the Bure, past St Benet's

    DSC_0265.thumb.JPG.fe69a9e8445486591e28b531b69a6add.JPG

Up the Thurne and onto Womack Dyke, where we passed Norfolk Time

We are now moored for our evening stopover as today our son has booked us a table at the Kings Arms, Ludham at 2.30pm as a Mother's Day treat for Julie.

    DSC_0268.thumb.JPG.0a8b6d961fcfacb4102c8fc3680a6ca7.JPG

So it will be food and drinks at the Kings Arms, then back to the boat for F1

  4. We did go for Ali Spice from Coltishall and although delivery was £6.50, it was worth it

I had chicken madras and Julie went for chicken Bhuna, both with pilau rice.

A garlic naan and poppadoms finished it off!

    It was delicious 😋

Topped off with a glass of Merlot....

We called in the Malsters for 2 drinks each before eating and thoroughly enjoyed it, as the staff were so welcoming

Must say though....the Granary is looking good tonight

Glad you are having a good time Warren. We did manage to hook up to the Irstead electric point last time we were on the mooring that’s on the other side of the mini dyke, using the extension lead and draping it carefully along one side of the little bridge. Mind you, I think we might have been pointing upstream.

We didn't bother and the batteries and heater worked perfectly fine so didn't need shore power

Shortly off to the Malsters for a couple of Saturday afternoon drinks...Then going to ring Ali Spice and see if they deliver to Ranworth Staithe as quite fancy a curry tonight and they never disappoint

  6. We had a nice break at Ludham Bridge and now we are at Ranworth Staithe which will be our overnight destination

We are moored right beside the taxi rank on the very first mooring, hooked up to the electric and are now going to grab some lunch before taking the dogs for a good walk and then call in the Malsters for a couple of pints.

If anyone is intending to get to Ranworth this afternoon, there are plenty of spaces

    DSC_0252.thumb.JPG.45e983c229a3f0b576367993d223f872.JPG

This morning we passed Concerto 1 down river of Irstead at 8.50am and no doubt they were rushing back to Stalham as they could have got a water skier on the back, they were going that fast!

Despite me beckoning him to slow down, the skipper had eyes forward only and darent look my way!

We also passed Silver Cloud and Evening Shadow as I note most of the syndicate boats were out on the water, at a more sedate pace I hasten to add.

We had one other interesting event as we bimbled down Ranworth Dam at around 3mph but still catching up to a yacht which was going straight down the dam towards Ranworth Staithe.

Then as I got about 5 feet from his stern to his port side, he decided without warning to tack straight across my bow, which required quick reverse throttle

I calmly said "I thought you would give me some warning that you were about to tack" to which the skipper replied "I was going to let you pass first but you slowed down"

I didn't even touch the throttle lever until I had to hit reverse!

I then passed after he had tacked and just slowly shook my head in disbelief

Never mind...calm is restored and all I can hear is bird song, the odd person on the green chatting and the occasional aircraft

    Bliss!!!

  8. We arrived in Norfolk on Thursday just after 3pm to stay overnight at the wonderful Bumble Barn B&B which is the home for landlord and landlady of the Cross Keys at Dilham, with a number of rooms converted from a barn or stable block

The breakfast is made to order and was plentiful and delicious

We left Bumble Barn around 9am and made our way to Horning Pleasurecraft to board Moonlight Shadow, but before doing so we took some instructional videos for the syndicate, which included the weed and flush filters, the various switches and dials and just some advice which hopefully will support our current and future members.

We had a walk to Boulter's and booked the pump out and refuel and asked if they had any updated instructions on their breakdown service which we could provide to the members, but was told, just ring the marine number 24/7 365 days a year and they will do the rest.

The peace of mind having this available is worth the membership fee in my opinion.

We set off from HPC around 11am and headed off towards the Ant, as we did so we saw Blue Mist, Cerise Lady and a number of hire boats on the rivers.

It lashed it down between 12 and 3.30pm but we managed to moor at Ludham Bridge to give the dogs a break whilst the worst of it came down.

Willy Weather was saying it would stop around 3pm so we set off from Ludham Bridge at that time with a view to mooring at Irstead, Gayes Staithe or Barton Turf and lucky for us the mooring (without electricity) at Irstead was available so we stopped there for the evening.

What a lovely spot, the rain had stopped and it would be our first ever overnight mooring here.

And what a peaceful place this is....

I am very impressed with Moonlight Shadow also as previously we had no end of problems with the batteries failing, the inverter not functioning correctly and the heater kicking out after 30 minutes of use if you weren't on shore power or running the engine.

No such issues now, as we settled down to watch some TV on our new smart telly, the inverter functioning as it should, the heater keeping the boat lovely and toastie and the batteries showing no signs of drain!

The only issue I have with this mooring is the "race" to get back to Richardsons by some hire boaters as we have already had 2 former Swan boats going way over the 4mph speed limit as they head up the Ant

But they have gone and all I can currently hear is the morning bird songs ❤️

  9. OHHHH we cant wait!

We travel down to Norfolk next Thursday 16th March as we are staying at Bumble Barn B&B for one night https://bumblebarnbandb.co.uk/ and we are meeting some friends for food at the Smallburgh Crown that evening https://www.smallburghcrown.co.uk/ before a week on Moonlight Shadow https://moonlightshadow.net/

We have no idea where we will end up on our week, but a loose plan is River Ant on the Friday, Acle area on the Saturday, River Thurne or Womack Sunday, Ranworth or Salhouse Monday, Coltishall Tuesday, back to Horning Wednesday and then a clean, refill and pump out Thursday before getting some food late afternoon and then the travel home.

Whether that loose plan comes to fruition is anyone's guess, but certainly looking forward to getting back out on the water

We are then back down in June and August this year so hopefully at least one of them will involve a bit of sun!!

Come and say hello, if you see us around

Toll payments are due on 1st April, Andrew - All Fools Day!  Highly appropriate, under the circumstances.

My money will remain in my bank account until 31st March.

    So will Moonlight Shadows!

They won't get one penny until we have to!!!

13% rise is disgraceful, especially off the back of COVID and the current economic crisis

As a management team, we are hoping to get new curtains in the budget for next Winter Maintenance and hopefully, reupholster the headboards.  Other improvements are planned, but obviously we have a responsibility to the syndicate to have the funds available for any additional expenditure and seek their approval, too.

As Helen said, I went to Horning last Friday to assess the work completed and I have to say that I don’t think I’ve ever seen Moonlight Shadow looking better externally, especially considering she’s now over thirty years old.

First time I can remember that we have been able to complete the Winter Maintenance, and upgrades such as the upholstery, without going to the syndicate members for more funds.

And we still have reserve funds which hopefully will grow over the season.

Self management seems to have lots of benefits for syndicate members and Moonlight Shadow

Got to agree with you about HPC. The service and support we have received from them has been first class

    Looks good

Will have to give it a try

Does anyone know if they still allow dogs inside?

  13. The green agenda being pushed by successive governments is nonsensical in my opinion, but that is amplified by clean air charges to enter a town or City, reduction in speed on sections of motorway to apparently reduce carbon emissions and much, much more including green agendas by organisations such as BA.

So I do not feel that you are way off the mark @Vaughan

The world is a huge place, and I have travelled much of it with my work and recreation.

If you visit the packed cities of Accra in Ghana, Abuja in Nigeria and Tunis in Tunisia for example (all recently visited by me) you will see literally thousands of old dirty vehicles of all shapes and sizes, including a high proportion of 4x4s, monster trucks, pick ups and vans, together with many HGVs, buses and coaches which would never be allowed on UK roads.

The road network is atrocious and the driving similar!

But they are at least 50 years away from even considering green programmes.

That's just 3 countries out of hundreds of similar countries across the world in the same place.

But our little island somehow must race to become green or the planet eco system will collapse!

In my opinion we are being played and sadly far too many are too blinkered to see the true world around them.

Yes, we should do what we can, but that should not be to the detriment of the people, the businesses and the locations which we all hold dear.

Perhaps, if they were seen to fight our corner a bit more, like striving to keep the ‘quiet’ moorings at Potter and Barton Turf open, instead of just saying that the cost was not justifiable, we’d have a little more faith in them.  As it is, they’re seen as just a kwango, looking after their own best uncontrolled interests, without regard for the boating community.

    Totally agree Malcolm

I do feel that forums like this are an excellent vehicle for discussion and judging mood and should really consider taking a leaf out of football supporters trusts of which many have now developed a strong identity, that they have now got seats on the board of many of the clubs.

It wasnt always like that and many clubs didnt want anything to do with their respective supporters trust

One such supporters trust is Bolton Wanderers which now has very strong ties with the club and its voice and opinions are heard and shared via the clubs board.

It wasnt always like this and took a lot of drive and determination to make it happen by people on both sides (driven by the trust initially) who in effect where just a forum for people with a passion to see the club come out of its troubles and forge greater links with the people who use its facilities and were extremely critical of the club and its activities.

I do see parallels with such organisations as BA and believe over time groups like NBN could in fact have a greater say but it would take a lot of work and movement on both sides to make strides on that particular topic and the right people to make it happen.

    Just a thought!!!
