  1. I believe All the Yards are informed by the sailing club, whether they tell their hirers is up to them. I believe the most affected yard Richardson's, manager Clive Richardson (CRicko of this site) has been a regular competitor, I've been in the same race as him more than once.. Oh there he, is standing in the middle with Horning Sailing club behind him (Paul Richardson sitting on the boat and Robert Richardson standing.) I'm guessing at a previous Horning Boat show..

    Roadworks 2022

New roadworks in Wroxham, just down hill from the Avenue, they were setting up the lights as I went through this morning. Outside Tescos loading bay Stalham, new traffic lights, they are digging up the newly laid tarmac pavement for which we had traffic lights before, to put in a dropped pedestrian kerb , right on the corner of Upper Staithe Road, less than 50 foot from the, as yet not commissioned, pedestrian crossing.. Also I notice just on the south side of the Wroxham railway bridge, the manhole cover is moving and the tarmac is breaking up, expect road works there too.

  7. You'd have to really really good at groveling to get into the race now.. 25 days to go, the Guardship kit was being sorted out on Sunday..
  8. 25 days to go so a bump up for this...
  9. Horning Sailing club. https://www.horning-sailing.club/ see the web site for contact details. I think all the current moorings available are the other side of the river. Two rowing dinghies are available to use to cross to get to your boat. Joining the club gives you use of the club, car park, toilets / showers, water supply for tank filling and the slipway which will take a 20ft boat. The only disadvantage is no mooring on the club island during racing. Joining gives you the option of joining in social events also on the website. The combined cost of our moorings and club membership is still cheaper than almost all commercial moorings.

    My Day

My day? I'll be standing / sitting at Horning sailing club car park , Public car parking is at Bewilderwood, for Horning boat show, the club's open, the Tea bars the cheapest in town , take the weight off your feet and watch the world go by.. .. Or take a trip out in one of our sailing boats, £5 for adults free for accompanied children.
  11. no I don't use the Broadland name, I just use the village name or " the Broads" The fish and Chip shop, is in Repps not Potter Heigham, come to that Potter Heigham isn't the area around Lathams.. The whole area north of the river is called Heigham, Potter Heigham (or more correctly Heigham Potter) is the village over by the church where... They used to make pots... The area around Lathams (or is that QD stores) is actually in Heigham Falgate.. Since gate (or the Norse "gat"~) meant road, and Norse "Falr" meant tube, was that the name of a road Bridge?

Quite impressive damage to the freemasons hall, where the car went off the road in Wroxham, no skid marks looks like they just swerved off ramming the building and causing the gas leak.. For bad news just up hill from there on the other side of the road is a new set of markings on the road, expect another hole int eh ground more traffic lights and hold ups some time..

I was in the jam behind that at the flower shop when told, the jam went back past the railway bridge. Having already been in a traffic jam on Fifers way, and another up to the Coltishall NDR roundabout, where traffic was backing up off the Colitshall road so there was something up there too.. So I diverted Via Acle, was very late home.. The road is clear this morning..

    Acle Moorings

Glad someone reads my Posts, unfortunately one or two see the 3 Rivers Race thread and ignore it as they don't sail, which is why I do an alternative thread for the race days in the hope they might read it.. It's really for the first timers / non locals who might look on the net for information about the broads. I believe the club Notifies all the boat yards, as well..
  15. If so, here's a gentle warning, there will be in excess of 100 Sailing Boats departing Horning 11:00 12:30 of Saturday 28th sailing round the broads on the following course, in any choice of routes, they have 24 hours to return to the club having passed all check points. Problems for Non competitors on the rivers: and some advice, The Start Line: At the Swan Inn Corner, groups of about 10 boats at a time will start at 5 minute intervals, the following group will be circling 100 yards up river from the Swan waiting their turn. So you will be faced with 20 boats doing circles till they move on. So If you are coming up river towards Wroxham, keep right, keep slow, go forward when you have a gap in traffic let them Sail around you, don't go into the middle of the river or you will have boats all around you, you and they would have nowhere to go.. If you are coming down river Keep right keep slow, when a group starts, follow them through, when you get a gap on your side of the river go through slowly if they are at a near stand still due to lack of wind. The River Ant, Let me advise you, I would NOT take my motorboat up the Ant Between 13:00 and 15:00 on the 28th May, it WILL BE Chaos, the majority of the boats will sail up there to the turning point about 100 yards below the bridge. That is not to say you can't, I just wouldn't. If you must, keep right, Keep slow, let them sail around you, they are much more manoeuverable than you are, The tide will be flowing out, this may mean you have to go into reverse just to hold in one place going down river. Potter Heigham and Acle Bridges, Please be careful, some competitors will go to the bank to lower their mast, a few will float about in the middle of the river drifting towards the bridge, while lowering their mast, then paddle furiously to go through.. Generally, If you come across one boat always pass behind them if they are tacking across the river, if they are going along, they normally point to where they want you to go. I point at the motorboat and them point to where I want it to go.. If there are a large group of boats coming towards you, slow down keep right, let them go around you, If you want to pass them, keep it slow, keep right unless they are all on your side of the river not tacking across, if they are not tacking across, then you may move left and pass (slowly) .. Places to view the Race, The Swan and Horning Village Greens, few moorings The Ferry and New Inn pubs, Cockshoot Broad BA moorings, not many spaces there though St Benets Straight, lots of moorings, South Walsham Dyke Moorings The end of the Thurne Lion Dyke. Potter Heigham Bridge very popular, the first boats will arrive around 15:00 but the majority not till around 18-19:00 in normal winds. Acle Bridge, also popular plenty of moorings but the Bridgecraft side is pay for moorings... Once we are down to the last week and we know what are the forecast winds, I'll try to give a rough update on teh likely timings of the main fleets of boats.. I will up date this with more information when required, any questions please ask.. Enjoy your trip out on the Broads!!

    Acle Moorings

I don't know if you are still going to be afloat on the 28th of May, but that is the first day of the 61st 3 Rivers Race, High tide (At Horning) is around the start times (1100-12:30). So around 100 sailing boats will be heading towards Acle, The first I'd expect to see there around 15:00 the majority around 16:30, the latest around 18:00.. with a smaller number arriving 12 hours later.. The Majority will want to moor on the Cafe Side, between there and the bridge and dismast, before paddling under, the brave ones will lower their masts while floating in the river towards the bridge. Any one on the Course area day or night expect sailing boats in a large quantity!!! That reminds me I'd better put my general warning about the race out, to those uninvolved.
  17. Officially entries are now closed, unofficially a bit of groveling will still get you in..

    My Day

Friday Morning was spent working on Blue Moon. Seat moved back, most of the controls moved back a few other minor tasks completed. Sunday, Black Horse Broad being open for the week, the club had it's first series of races up there for the year. They've changed the programme, So the first race starts about 10:30, (6 main starts) at 3 minute intervals. The next series of races starts before the last boats are in from the last starts of the previous race series. So all 3 race series are over by about 14:00. Then home to the club for lunch. I'm pleased with the way Blue Moon performs upwind, the first two races we arrived at the first buoy alongside the leader, the third race we were the leader.. However, downwind we are getting hammered, they just sail away from us.. Ideas are being researched to improve Blue moons downwind speed.. A couple of minor breakages will need to be fixed before the next race, and two small changes to the rig to improve downwind performance are planned. Parts have been ordered hopefully they'll arrive in time. While putting Blue Moon to away, Southern comfort came back... She was not happy... Two canoes and a dayboat on her mooring.. Tied up by the no mooring sign..

The North Walsham road from the Hoveton - Stalham road is now open. The Coltishall road NDR roundabout is cone city... Cones all around it and down onto the NDR towards the Wroxham road roundabout. The reason? something large tried to go through the Armco about 100 yards down from the roundabut.. I suspect the repairs will only take a couple of days. Oh Tesco Stalham PFS had a tanker in this morning, and the Roys one a couple of days ago but they have no diesel again..

    My Day

You definitely make me envious too. I may have met the Admiral too.. Back during the 10th anniversary of the Falklands there was a dinner in the Officers mess at RAF Mount Pleasant most of the captains of the Falklands ships were there, as well as anyone else of importance including Maggie and Denis I was in the mess but not invited to the dinner..
  23. Interesting, the railway cottage.. Big enough to require a permanently manned cottage when built, but it appears the road has never been made up into a modern tarmacked road.. But has a modern stop, look, listen, sign
