  1. We've had people claim there has been an incident, when nobody knew anything about it. In one claim the club got a message almost a month after the event, claiming one of our boats had torn off their flag pole. The boat information we were given, was it was a white boat with white sails.. On closer inspection of the claim it turned out to be a day after the regatta and therefore it probably wasn't one of ours.. Our lot would have been at home having a rest after 7 days sailing. We've also had a hire boat sink one of our boats and then drive off... In that case a ranger was actually in sight and stopped them.
  2. 27th -29th of August, Barton Broad Regatta, held by the Norfolk Punt Club, a busy regatta, and it's a lot more than punts. Races start around 10:00 and last boats around about 17:00, Again please keep to round the edges of the broad for going through, and mud weighting.
  3. Sunday 21st to Friday 26th August, Oulton Broad regatta, I know it's a big one, but I don't know a lot about it. And I guess they like you to keep to round the edges if you are going through or to the Broad..
  4. Just checked on NLS maps, the Staithe was still shown up to the 1951 map which is as recent as NLS maps go
  5. Just looked at this.. yep I agree, a clip from the 1885 map.. Not that it matters, I believe the BA's remit is to keep the navigation as it was when they took over.. Otherwise we could call to sail up Muck fleet and a few other places that used to be accessible.
  6. If I can get a Lysander 17 around the 3 RR course in under 24 hours (on several occasions) you could get Lapwing round...
  7. The land owner receives no benefit from the broad being open, in fact in 1949 tried to close the broad. The sailing club uses the broad for racing for 7 hours on each of 10 days a year, plus about 4 hours on about 20 days for the sailing school. Total 150 hours. The public uses the broad via the Rivers for which BA has authority, uses the broad for 183 days a year. 4293 hours a year, Exactly why should the sailing club fund this ? We don't have the money, the landowner would be happy closing it. If you want access to the broad then the only group that could pay is the total tax payers of the broads.
  8. Why do I suspect their Idea of a generous Offer is nothing of the sort?

    Roadworks 2022

Oh good I'll have retired and won't be going through there twice a day..
  10. You too, only I did the study of the play nearly in it's setting, as I was at school in Inverness...
  11. Horning Sailing club NEVER placed the no mooring signs on the river bank... That was the landowner to stop himself being sued by anyone being tripped up / falling down a hole etc.. it is very rough in there.. The river bank used to be cleared by HSC, but the responsibility for that section of river bank clearing has now been taken over by BA and from my point of view aren't as good doing it as the Sailing club was. I suspect all you'll see soon is a bank of trees like further up the river.. The Sailing club certainly does not have the resources to clear that broad, and doesn't have the permits. I suspect the club would need Permits from BA, the Environment agency, and probably Natural England. All no doubt, wanting vast amounts of money the club doesn't have.
  12. Because BA believe they only have to clear the navigational channels, not the broads.. So Black Horse Broad which is also clogged with weed this year, has no chance of being cleared at all because it's not an official navigational channel, it's an arrangement between the villagers of Horning and the Broad owner to keep it open for the summer months..
  13. The inch has been officially measured in millimeters since 1959, 25.4mm to the inch, 304.8mm to the foot.

    My Day

Your picture however was before 10:00 maybe around 09:30 as buoy 5 at the clubhouse is in place, but buoy X near Southquays entrance, and buoy 1 just short the top corner are missing . Had you turned your camera right about 45 degrees, it would have broken at the sight of me at the clubhouse front getting my boat ready.
  15. Some bad news, there is excessive weed on Black Horse Broad, causing sailing boats to lose steerage, and rescue boats getting weed clogged propellers. Temporarily sailing has been suspended on the Broad by Horning Sailing club, it's highly likely the traditional club broads regatta weekend on the broad will not take place, but we'll have to race on the river. The times shown above for regatta weekend will remain the same.
  16. I recognized a couple of the sailing boats, and I suspect I know / knew some of those in the Enterprise dinghies.
  17. and time to avoid some fishing lines. 13-21st AUG GY&NCAA Angling Event - Buckenham - Langley; Rivermasters...
  18. I don't know what happed there I seem to have repeated things, Anyway, the next regatta is the Breydon Regatta. 13th -14th Aug, I don't know a lot about that one, but at least you'll see the boats coming..

    Roadworks 2022

I was sat in a traffic Jam on Friday, at 08:00 @ Sutton Bridge, when the voice on the radio said all works will be cleared by 13:00
  20. I suggest reading the Coot Club, written in 1934, hullabaloos back then...
  21. The Next regatta is Hickling Broad SC’s, it actually overlaps Horning’s this year. Wednesday 3rd, Thursday, 4th Friday 5th, evenings only 19:30 onwards, Saturday 6th Sunday 7th 10:00-17:00 Shouldn’t bother many people, since in a motorboat unless you Really Know the broad, you need to keep to the deep water channels, All you can do is slow to let boats cross or pass you. Just be careful as you approach the club / Pleasure Boat Inn, next door as this will be the busiest area. Viewing.. The Pleasure Boat quay heading, You could mud weight just outside the deep water channel somewhere, but the broads is very weedy.. Ok the next one shouldn’t get in anyone’s way it’s the Royal Norfolk and Suffolk Yacht Clubs Sea week. 6th Aug to the 11th Aug. If you have a problem with passing sailing boats in the North Sea, then you should have stayed on the broads. If you want to watch there various places along the shore if you’ve got binoculars, or you’ll need an anchor, a mud weight won’t do.. This is rapidly followed By Hickling Broad Village Regatta dating from the days where the villages ran Water Frolics before sailing clubs were invented. 13th - 14th August Starts around 10:00 ish finishes when they feel like it.. Did you know one of the earliest recorded water Frolics was in Great Yarmouth in 1577?

  24. Izal type toilet roll started being phased out in the military around about 1983-84 that's in normal barrack use. They started accusing us of stealing it when it arrived... No we weren't stealing it.. we were using it for the first time... The replacement isn't as good as the cheapest own brand paper, but a huge improvement on the greaseproof paper of the past. Compo ration packs what's in there now I have no idea, But Izal stayed for many a years after..
  25. If you have any questions about the above I'll try to help.. More regattas to follow when I have the chance..
