ChrisB
I had to go into Cromer this morning and saw that a Square Rigger and a supply/Service Vessel we at anchor waiting out the blow. The surfers however were not best placed with this wind! Hardly "Ride, Ride, Ride, the wild surf" as Jan and Dean used to sing.

ChrisB
No it was blowing a stonker, but we have had no rain and quite a bit of sun. The boats were anchored in the calm created by the weather shore and cliffs, hence the surfers had no waves. If you look beyond the boats you can see the sea starting to kick up. SPEEDTRIPLE
That looks like the Sir Winston Churchil or Malcolm Miller?. I believe they were sister ships.

There was hardly any difference between them just subtle differences like cabin door shape and boom crutches. They also trimmed different but that was due to how WC was chocked during construction allowing the concrete to run too much astern during pouring and was a mistake. The ship in my picture is rigged square and therefore can't be either boat that are now luxury Charter Yachts. The rigs of both boats were deliberately designed to incorporate many different attributes of various types of rig and was called something like: "Bermudan Topsail Schooner" In this pic you can see clearly see both the influence of Bermudan and Gaff, very good from a training perspective.
ChrisB
There was an old joke that was told to more senior crew when you embarked. Remember I am talking late 60s early 70s. About both ships locking into harbour together in France. One ship was crewed by girls the other boys. It was alledged that some little oik, obviously an observer of the finer points of yacht design shouted, at the top of his voice " They have different shaped crotches to ours" If you look at the pic above I think the Winston Churchill's was square.

From the ensign, she appears to be French and I think I have seen her before, in the port of Sète.

Vaughan
I would call her a barquentine rather than a barque as the mizzen mast has only fore-and-aft sails, but who's complaining? She is a beautiful sight and when you see her close up, in harbour, she is huge!
