Canopy frame

Hi,

I am replacing a canopy frames on the boat, and intend to add a curve to the top of the rail to stop water forming a pool on top of the canopy.

Any thoughts on the amount of curve required?

I dont know what boat you have but I would say at least 6",

do you have 1 hoop or 2? as the closer the frames the less of a bend you will need to stop water settling on top.

Thanks for the thoughts, I think a 6" curve on the frame will be about right.

The front frame will be more upright, and the frame moved inside the screen as the screen is being made to fold.

the frames dont look that bad (right bend) if you take the canvass off you could tie a piece of string from the screens then round the hoops and aft, this will give you an idea of headroom and how the frames could sit if you can reuse/ alter them...

The rear stainless frame has been replaced in the past, however the front frames are Aluminium and the port side of the frame has snapped. The break is at a previous repair where someone has pop riveted a short section of thin pipe. Also the pivots for the frame were bodged and the frame did not fully fold flat, so in the past it has been forced and bent the tubing, straightened, bent again and so on.

There are also cracks in other places, so rather than re-shape the frame I think I will replace with new stainless.

Might I suggest rather than making a curve across the boat, you have a slightly longer vertical hoop than you have now, causing the rain water to drain fore and aft rather than side to side.

Hi Ian, Marine Weld in Nofth Walsham is good for stainless steel , did a lot for Colin , HJ3 and worth a phone call to MWto see if he has any patterns ?
