  1. Well in this Well £150 for a club isnt over board in this day and age (under £3 a week in fact) and as for expensive rod licence's £27 a year is great value. There is no close season on still waters, in fact thats been the case for years....
  2. Well I remember getting my Essex & Suffolk rod licence from morris takle in brentwood in the 50's only one rod allowed in those days. if I remember correctly it was 6d a year from june 16th till march 15th following year, yes a season long.
  3. Well slow demise cant all be blamed on computor games, as this started in the 70's as an ex tackle shop owner. I can tell you the leauge against blood sports has a lot to answer for it. I had them camped on my door step one june16th abusing any one coming to the shop. The police just said they are only demonstrating, its a free country. That was the start of the decline and its still decling now for other reasons as well. Kids arnt encouraged to go out any more, when i was a kid the only times we wernt out and bout was meal times bed times and school time. Oh how the times in 60 years have changed. For the good im not so sure
  4. Our thoughts are with you Jon at this sad time Charlie and the wench
  5. A v ery belated one from me and the wench as well
  6. well it was 29th october 1976, on out honeymoon abourd the bourgh queen, on waking up at about 7am the wench had her hand out of the bunk and said should there be water on the floor. jumping out only to find that yes there was about half an inch over the floor, the forward cabin was only just above the hull, so firing the engine up at that time then putting on the pumps, we was moored near a pub in the somerleton area near the swing bridge. So I deceded the best option was to get the boat back to st olaves where we got it from. Well it just went from bad to worse, as on approaching the new cut waveney junction there was an almighty thud the engine reved its preverbile off and no steering luck was with us as the breeze was blowing us over toward the beever fleet mariner. The wench says to me when were near the grass bank your ok its just wet grass. I jumps only to find its a good 6ft of water, by which time 3 guys arrived from the beever fleet pulled me out and got the boat onto their slip in the mariner, and phoned out yard. An old boy turned up and says oh its ok its only that troublesome plank sprung again, have you any newspaper if you have i'll stick a new nail in it and off you can go again. Guess what we did ................ booked the beever fleet for the easter of 1975 and went home
  7. Well I met him yesterday with the trouble n strife, in his yard, and he seemed ok. We will be going back to see him next week again all being well.
  8. I used to be a partner in a trailer building repair and service firm. Look at the weights on a carvan chasis carefully yes they are braked but a lot of touring caravans weigh in less than 750kg. Also the chasis on them is flimsey chanel that on a boat trailer will rot out in no time. suspension units arnt cheap but are safe, as are alko axles of correct weight but not cheap. If there was a cheap way there wouldnt be so many trailers being built year on year. Charlie
  9. "God knows how they would cope with a harbour bar, or shoal waters." I for one respect the tides coming from the coast. I coped with them from a young age in the rivers/estuarys around Essex. But on these forums some make newbies think its like crossing the Atlantic!.... Or is that a way of keeping hire boaters and newbies away from some stunning places?.
  10. I feel that these days far to much is made of crossing Breydon Water, My first crossing was in 1976 in an old wooden boat I hired from Oulton Broad called Anglian Sonet. A very enjoyable crossing it was well. Just use common sense when crossing it...
  11. it has to be getting in the old jam jar, all packed ready for a Broads break. Charlie
  12. I to remember it in the 70's my kids always loved playing there. While we had a pint or three. Lasy year the grandkids loved stopping there for the donkeys. Charlie
