  1. its not usually recommended due to the low water temperature, but it is an activity that has always taken place, and last week the water was particularly warm, there have now been several organised events on the waveney. it is indeed an activity that every boater should be aware of and watch out for, much as you need to do for canoeists, and paddle boarders, that are out in prolific numbers at the moment, indeed there is no real difference between a swimmer and a paddle boarder that has fallen off their board. indeed the Broads Authority strongly advise against it but it is allowed. https://www.broads-authority.gov.uk/boating/navigating-the-broads/outdoor-swimming but also advise all of the dangers. if steps are taken to mitigate the risks- eg only swimming when the water is warm enough, avoiding busy areas or times, etc, then swimming may be undertaken with a degree of safety
  2. perhaps your boat usage is not covered by travel insurance like heir holidays were?
  3. The Broads Authority have announced the Bure is closed at Great Yarmouth at this time.
  4. the bank seemed the better option as banks have better security than shop windows.
  5. Exactly so Helen, while i was taking a dip, my foot encountered a strange manufactured object so I hooked it out, leaving it by the bank in case the owner spotted it and retrieved it.
  6. this is why if i take a swim on the broads no matter where, i tie off a safety line to assist me getting out of the water, and take the end of the line with me. i also scope out the depth near my exit point and its consistency eg soft mud, thus if my legs sink into the mud i have a rope to pull myself out. i am not scared to swim, but i dont see any point in taking unnecessary chances
  7. Runes dear boy Runes, none of this common latin muck, and a sunstone to navigate by.
  8. well we found the reason the bilge pump was operating, and that is because the water tank has a couple of places it is dripping, if you look at the bottom boards under that starboard water tank, you will see they are always wet. so the tank is on its last legs, and will need replacement soon, its an old galvanised tank so not recommended for welding. it seems to slow down with about half a tankfull left
  9. well done, have a good time and enjoy, remember you will probably need to refill the water tank regularly.
  10. I did overhear the guys emptying the bins at lodden complaining that someone had rammed a full bin bag in and got it wedged, they said, why dont they just put it next to he bin? now i can see both sides of that coin, if you leave a bin bag next to the bin, its untidy and you dont know if it will be left because it wasnt in the proper bin, but leaving it beside make the bin mens lives easier.
  11. maybe they thought it was a drive thru.
  12. when on Water Rail i tend to run a gps speed app, and have my 1946 Jarrolds map as that is more in keeping with the boats character.
