  1. So I'm right in thinking its alright to run my engine all night at a mooring? Because hey, my great granddad who is long dead, did once? People wheel the nanny state argument soon go running to that state when they get infringed upon
  2. It probably depends how long or if the boat is going out again. I know I reported a boat early last year regarding a hydraulic oil leak from the steering wheel, not bad but enough to wipe down twice a day and I ran into the same boat in a yard with the same familiar leak later that same year. I guess it would take the boat out of rotation for too long to fix in season. I wonder if the boat yards leave something wrong until it gets phoned in as a complaint?
  3. Not giving woman the right to vote is something we done for centuries too.... Context is important here. To me, mad dogs yapping is annoying. It's what dogs do you say. Me playing loud music outside your door is what I do then. Bet you complain then. Hoover the boat back in the marina then, that's what I do. Bonfires, great on a frosty morning. Stupid on a mild one so none can have a window open. What's the pressing need to smoke everyone out now, at this moment that can't wait a bit? And that rubbish about the old days? Peaceful? Many a neighbour fight was had according to my grandad who was a beat copper in the east end. From domestics at turning out time to pay day gambling, street against street and family against family. Doors was left open because you had nothing worth stealing. He used to say the only difference between now and then was that the old Bill was never called in at all and a load of violence was classed a domestic and left alone. I try to be responsible. I never run my engine at silly o'clock. I frap my lines as not to knock against the mast and I keep my dogs under bark control when in public holiday area
  4. Rented the bolero torvil in April and its a great boat and it fits under all. (6 foot four I think) and the frying pans under the cooker ( sorry about that phone call brooms)
  5. They are. Loynes have one under construction we was told and so has Brooms both of which we hired from this year and the quality of both is very high.
  6. Yes I saw that and it didn't look official. That leaves only the two boat spot further down. Is this BA's tape or something less than proper?
  7. It's a conversation we are having on sea forums. Since most marine engines are based on plant engines, there won't be a shortage of base engines. Probably a rise in electronics controlling them like the car industry use. Much tighter operating conditions. All electric hybrid vessels still need a diesel generator to recharge them and all electric boats can be a major hazard if you fail reach a recharging station. Sailing is the hybrid system I prefer.
  8. That's what I heard. Again just mooring talk I had at Reedham. I think the bones of the conversation was that it's a bit wild west there and the cafe is now closed and except for a very small area its not controlled by BA. I got the impression an element turned up and it got rowdy. The hirers felt isolated. The free moorings before is only 10 minutes upriver so why not?
  9. Do this a lot. Watch for water pipes that are missing in winter and are there in summer or frozen, yacht stations are closed. The need to run engines way longer or connect to power. Choose boat carefully. Some sliding roof ones are very draft prone and you may need to run heating a lot so keep batteries topped up
  10. You don't have to cross at slack tide although this would give you near enough maximum space under bridges. We crossed an hour after slack to give us reasonably good crossing times all that meant was a crossing against tide on the way down but a good push up. Also after advice we did not stop at Berney arms but at the free moorings before. Two reasons for this was that there are more free moorings than the two or so official ones at Berney and a warning that some bloke was demanding mooring fees at the arms.
  11. At Acle, herbie woods boat turns up and moors bow first in the stern mooring section of bridgecraft. You could hear the crunch from the free moorings. Very packed here.
  12. Thanks to this forum I knew all was not right at what I consider a stop over point before crossing.
  13. Moored at burgh castle moorings last night and I can tell you the whole situation is quite sad especially as low tide is late. It was full and at half six people was still looking to moor. Most chanced st olaves, a bit tight on the hour or so of daylight. Nice if BA posted notices to hire yards about closed sections
  14. True. I hate it when I wave and I'm left hanging with no reply. I wonder is it because the lack of mooring is adding to a competitive feeling on the river?
  15. The trouble is, there is not much of our countryside that is natural. I think a lot of conservation groups really mean is "Keep it the same way as I've always remember it"
  16. In my welcome pack, I think it says that towing is a big no no. Playing devils advocate, I guess well intentioned help by those less experienced maybe more hindrance than help especially on the lower reaches of the rivers. Having had an engine fail out at sea near the out fall of the Medway I was very thankful for my anchor. But I had time to react. I always wondered about the mud weight, great on the broads and the upper regions but next to useless in a tidal race. I would stop and help but its fishing season now and how many boats do you see nudged up in the reeds? Unless someone's jumping up and down in obvious distress I may cruise past.
  17. Way to kill the holiday trade. Let's go on holiday but first we have to take this exam. Spend hours on tuition and when its dark go no where on the first night. I'm a hire boater, own my own sailing yacht, RYA day skipper and know all about tide and tidal streams. And still came in very wrong at cantley (spelt wrong but I'm not arguing with the spell checker) Are all boat users qualified? Never had an embarrassing moment? Know all the colregs? We could make boat use testable, you know, everybody who use the water take an exam, how's your off shore skills? This is what insurance is for, enjoy the moment and thank god it isn't me this time. It will be one day.
  18. And how many road bridges get hit a day by HGV's? At least five HGV's a day get turned around at the Dartford tunnels for being too high. I've seen boats trying to moor the wrong way against tide and wind and a whole host of mistakes can and do happen. Don't forget folks experience can only be gained by actually doing and failing. I tend to agree that maybe he was swept onto the bridge and novice captains sometimes don't get the strength of tides.
  19. Or perhaps its the myth sold to hirers you can moor, eat in the pub you want and enjoy the carefree lifestyle of the river forgetting to add mooring where and when you want is more a game of luck, someone owns the banks, disappearing free moorings, too little in the popular places and loads miles from anywhere.
  20. All good and thank you. Pedro's it is then.
  21. Is Acle Horizon (as was) mooring still usable and how's about down river from there? When away in September going down south (where the grass is green and girls are pretty), early tides so I want to get down as far as possible. Thanks in advance Also thanks guns and roses.
  22. I would but it rubs in the bilge department
  23. The hand over we had was one of the best but we did inform them we own a boat and had extensive experience of the broads. We don't need to hang around for a show and tell. We hired Bolero which had a mud-weight on a rope that indeed surprised me but it's no problem as I need the exercise. I think people don't research enough or understand the power of modern electronics, twin 160amp gel batteries, separate engine start battery, inverter efficiency and the power of two 60amp alternators, smart chargers and power saving of LED lamps. We had everything on, including heating over night and the battery bank only showed quarter discharged which was replaced after a four hour cruise. But then coming from our sailing boat out in the Medway, you sort of become an electric anorak!
