  1. I couldn't agree more Jean, you're spot on. The music quality is superb. Strictly gives me a  feeling  of regret in that my mum  never got to enjoy it. She would have adored it. In her youth she was passionate about ballroom dancing and enjoyed some success in competitive dancing - giving it up to marry my dad who although good wasn't competition standard  and was much happier stripping down a car engine than tripping the light fantastic. They used to go to a dance each weekend and I remember when the band struck up a  tango my mum and my father-in-law  would get up and as they danced the other dancers would gradually go back to their seats to watch leaving them the floor to themselves. they danced so well together which was odd really  because they didn't actually like each other very much. My dad's dancing forte was the slow foxtrot which was my mum's favourite dance fortunately!

  2. I'm a huge fan of Strictly and would have been very disappointed if Stacey and Kevin hadn't won.  As has been said what that girl achieved  was amazing and  although clearly she wasn't the best dancer she to me epitomised what the programme is all about. and therefore was the clear winner.

  3. Had a Zephyr 6 once - back in the 70's I loved it,  it was very fast away from a standstill, I personally loved the steering column gear change not everyone's cup of tea I know - and yes it did rust a  bit and  was inclined to be  bit skittish in the snow but nothing  a  bag of wet sand in the boot couldn't fix! I loved it's roominess you could chuck all the kids in together with the dog plenty of room for everyone and the hardwearing vinyl upholstery showed no signs of stress from all that either. Happy memories!

Try Richard again (Snugtopz), I know he hasn't been well recently (bad cold) and has fallen behind a bit but is catching up again.

Just tried to ring again as you suggested - success! apparently the number on the website is not the number to leave him a message on as it goes elsewhere to another part of the company. Anyway it seems to be sorted, so thanks again all.

  5. Thanks to everyone for their input. For the record we've been commissioning canopies for boats for in excess of 40 years and subsequently are pretty clued up on how to make our requirements  known. .Looking for cheapness was never on the agenda. Our preferred company in this instance would be Snugtopz but we  have had no luck in contacting them. Not living in the area makes calling in to the workshop a bit tricky during the winter months when we' re at home rather than on the  boat and we would like to get this new cover made as soon as possible rather than wait for the season to start. Once  again thanks to everyone.

  6. Thanks to everyone who was kind enough to respond to my request, unfortunately,  one of those most  recommended   we have pervious experience of and  although the canopy was o.k,. our boat was damaged and the other is the company that made the existing one.  I have come to the conclusion that any Company is  probably only as good as the last job they did! Prior to our present situation I would have had no hesitation in recommending the company that made the one we already have, it's been superb but is now coming up for 11 years old and clearly won't go on forever and we thought to replace it before it became urgent -  as the saying goes the best laid plans of mice and men!!

  7. Along with,  I suspect, lots of other boat owners our dealings with canopy makers over the years has often been fraught with difficulties. Last year we ordered a new canopy wanting exactly the same as we already had. When it arrived it was very different in many respects and not a good fit either, although that was not insurmountable, however  the fact that it leaked like a sieve was! they took it away and came back to us a few days later saying that they were unable to make a canopy like we already had - despite the fact that was them who made the existing one!! so we are still using the original.  .A recent visit to the boat to check it over revealed that the cover over our saloon roof light had fallen victim to the recent high winds and had disappeared so we find ourselves in need of a   company that can make a replacement. Can anyone recommend  someone. We've phoned Snugtopz but there's never anyone to answer the phone and left messages have thus far elicited no response.

  8. My husband is the worst back seat driver ever! I refuse to drive with him as a passenger as it is positively dangerous! The down side of  this is that I don't get to drive as often as I should, but in all honesty driving isn't half as enjoyable these days as it once was anyway, so I don't feel I'm missing out on much.

  9. My mother used to tell the story of how her father who had been very badly wounded in the 1st world war was out one day after the war had ended when walking round  a  corner he bumped in to an old friend who promptly dropped down in a dead faint,  he later explained to granddad that he was on his way home having just attended a ceremony for rhe erection of a war Memorial and among the names on it was that of my granddad together with those of both his brothers! In fact both his brothers had been killed and granddad died of his injuries some  15 years later, so it was somewhat prophetic.

Ah, not far from there then. I work at Block Fen quarry quite a lot, not far from the outdoor pursuites place.  Wife is a born and bred fen local from Whittlesey. Now they have opened the new Ely Southern Bypass has it helped?

We would have found the new bypass very useful when we lived on that side of Ely but now we rarely go through that part of the town so it came too late for us sadly.

  11. When we moved to the Ely area like you do now Jean we felt as if we were already partially living there because of having the boat  moored there for so many years.  In particular I would advise you to  be very careful not to under estimate what your  home requirements will be when retired. We did, bought a brand new bungalow and finished up making a further move 3 years later because  although very large it simply wasn't  enough.

  12.

Actually Jean I ,think  I   may well prefer that to being  located  in Cambridgeshire . I like Norwich as a city. One of the things I don't like about where we live is the awful shopping facilities, I sometimes have to drive a round trip of about  25 miles to get a preferred mascara! When you have lived all your life in areas where you can buy practically anything within a few minutes it comes hard. However offset against that is the fact that we bought a decent sized house for about a third of what our old house cost so it's very much swings and roundabouts.

  13. Totally agree about living close to where your boat is berthed. We retired 18 years ago and moved from North London to a village just outside Ely where our boat was moored on the river Gt. Ouse thinking it would be great not to have to do a long journey each time we wanted to go to it, especially as retirement meant we would be going more often. However unfortunately our marina changed hands and went from being idyllic to anything but! This prompted our moving the boat to the Broads. Far from finding the 1hr 45mins journey a nuisance we actually found we had re-captured that going away feeling which we hadn't even realised we had lost. Do I regret the house move?  A bit, but the benefits make it worth staying, The medical care is infinitely superior to that we would receive where we used to live and as one gets older that is very important, Yes, I 'd prefer to live closer to our family and yes I  will always be a London girl at heart but on the whole I think it worked out very well.

  14. could someone kindly explain to me how a post expressing concern for the wellbeing of Gracie managed to morph into a discussion  about the merits (or not) of washing powder? Priceless!!

  15. Yes you are quite right in that a lot seems to have changed for the better in recent times it needed to! Frankly I never had the slightest intention of ever posting again it was only my concern for Gracie plus her persistent attempts to rope me back in that overrode that sentiment. Events of a year ago caused the disappearance of  (in my opinion) several valued members and the forum remains poorer for their loss I believe,  and my anger at that remains. It could all have been handled so much better. It is to be hoped that lessons have been learned and should, God forbid ,a similar situation arise again it  will be dealt with more appropriately.

    regards,
