  1. We were moored next to a Herbie Woods hybrid thing (sorry can’t remember what the boat was called) in Beccles last October and they started up an engine (generator?) in the morning. It was well after 8am, so no complaints. I was just puzzled why a so-called more environmentally craft would need to run a generator at all as they had been plugged into electric overnight. I suppose the win is that you have a quieter cruise once your batteries are charged with more of an awareness of bird song etc. I’m still puzzled why they had to run the generator though?
  2. They were happy for us to moor there when we were on Water Rail, and that was a September, when their fleet was still in the water.

    Lifejackets

Gosh Kate, I’m glad you came through that relatively safely. Thank you for posting and thank goodness you were wearing you life jacket! A timely reminder for many of us.
  4. Lovely to hear about Mike the waterways chaplain. Good to hear that someone is looking out for local boat dwellers in these colder months.
  5. That's very sad to hear Sam. Are you considering hiring in Norfolk, or trying out new adventures on another waterway?
  6. Sending you the best of wishes Ian, and to Marina. Stay strong!
  7. That’s because I’m lazy and couldn’t be bothered to scroll up to find the original. Sorry!
  8. Err, no. I was referring to this that you quoted from MM in one of your recent posts…
  9. Flip, someone tell me the heater hasn’t fulfilled the expectation…please.
  10. We hadn’t visited the Maltsters for the last few years as it wasn’t consistent. We have had good meals there, but also not so good. We don't eat out that often, so if we have a not so good experience, it tends to put us off returning. I would love to try out The Granary, but we don’t leave the dogs on the boat unattended. Isn’t a publican a manager? I would like that’s a large part of the job.
  11. Good for you Fred. My father in law has been reminiscing about his grandad, who died in the 1940s. Grandad worked on whaling ships, so was away for goodness knows how long and (reputedly) disappeared off to a pub with his pockets full of his earnings when he did get home. His poor wife and kids!
  12. One of the things that drives Graham and I bonkers is that his Dad always has a glib answer to everything. Nothing is ever his fault. We think you are right about old age exaggerating personality traits.
  13. Where’s The Shoulder of Mutton? I guess I should know as we were based at Brundall for so many years.
  14. Thanks so much for starting this thread. It does help when your relative still has their marbles and is able to thank their carers. All my Mam’s carers expressed how they loved how appreciative she was. My Mam didn’t have that much in the bank so qualified for social care, and I must say that she couldn’t have had better care. It was a private company paid by social care, headed by a lovely African lady. When she first visited, Mam asked what her name was…it was ‘Mercy’. ‘How apt’ said Mam. I emailed my father in law’s Dr yesterday, and got a call from the Dr today. Dr Raj had visited Dad today, so that was good to know. Although Dad allowed him in, he wouldn’t let him test his blood pressure etc. so the Dr is going to arrange for a nurse to visit. Sometimes the NHS comes up trumps. It’s not perfect, but they are mostly doing a good job under difficult circumstances.
  15. The pork thing…I was taught that you had to cook pork thoroughly, so I was horrified to be served slightly pink pork a few years back. When I got home I did a bit of online research and found out that the ‘rules’ that govern what pigs can be fed have effectively removed the risk over eating ‘pink’ pork. The problem occurred when pigs were able to eat all sorts, including meat.
  16. Well, at least they are doing something about it. When we were last there the ‘Mrs Grinch’ in me commented to Graham that the BA probably wouldn’t bother fixing it until the spring. That’s me proved wrong.
  17. Haven’t heard of that. We’ll look into it. Yes, fortunately Graham has arranged all that. Just as well, as his Dad was hopeless with finance even before his memory became an issue.
  18. It is tricky. Social Workers had arranged for a temporary Care Home place for Dad, so that his home could be thoroughly cleaned. However, Dad categorically refused to go. He thinks we are just trying to shuffle him into a care home permanently, which isn’t the case. The Social Workers came up with suggestions for a couple of companies who will clean the place whilst he’s ‘in situ’, and we have a quote from one of them. Now, of course, Dad is starting to complain it’s going to be too much of an upheaval. The trouble is, Age Cymru (Welsh version of Age Concern) won’t allocate us a regular cleaner until a ‘deep clean’ has been done. Graham spent the weekend doing diy jobs and I’ve been doing urgent cleaning jobs and sorting out his food cupboards/fridge and freezer. He had quite a lot of food in the house this time, but most of it out of date. It feels like painting the Forth Bridge though. Never ending!
  19. If that's the case, it's sad. Managing a pub must be up there with other jobs such as working in the health service or farming as completely unrelenting and demanding. I feel very lucky to have worked in a 9-5 (ish) job most of my career.
  20. Oh, and here is little video snippet, just to demonstrate how extremely laid back Pozzie is.
  21. A few photos and a video of Pozzie and Seren from our trip to Graham's Dad in Anglesey these last few days. Thank goodness we were able to unwind taking the dogs for walks, as it's been a bit stressful. I won't include the photos I took of the maggotty meals that had been cooked and then forgotten about. The number of flies in the house was incredible. We mostly took the dogs to Penrhos beach for walks, as that was handy for the Travelodge we were staying in. We've decided we can't bear to stay in Graham's Dad's house any longer. Isn't that awful! Holyhead 'Mountain' (it's only about 700'). Eek - the flies!
  22. Good to see you back on the Broads Mr and Mrs Nog. I'm slowly catching up having been away for a few days. That photo from Ranworth. Hopefully the temporary fencing around one of the water hoses means that the BA are going to fix it. Last time we were there it was leaking from several holes, so by the time the water got to the end of the hose there wasn't much to speak of. Doh!
  23. I don't agree. I read reviews and there are lots of establishments that have glowing reviews, which invariably get my attention and custom. The negative reviewers who just diss a place because they were too fussy can be spotted a mile off.
