  1. Noticed this as I walked past New Inn Horning earlier.
  2. Today we went from Ranworth to Potter H, for a quick Latham's visit and dog walk. Then, back to Horning for a late lunch on our home mooring.
  3. Seems hardly worth their opening at all.
  4. We spotted Springer's Retreat as we passed LBBY this morning. Alec did get a bit wet. We are at Ranworth, tucked up next to Pipedreams. After a quick word with Simon, Alec and I went up to the church, as he hadn't visited it before. Once we'd had a look around, and Alec had been up the tower, we went to the church tea room, which is currently open weekends only until Easter. I'd forgotten they only accept cash, but Alec volunteered to go back to the boat for some. First he had his tea and millionaire 's shortbread. Just after he did leave it started raining. Fortunately it didn't get really heavy until he got to the boat and was able to grab an umbrella as well as the cash.
  5. Sorry we didn't meet this morning, I'm never sure of the etiquette of tapping on someone's window, especially if the curtains are partly drawn. We are currently at St Benet's. I'm preparing brunch whilst everyone else is out for a walk.
  6. Thanks for posting. I'm glad you managed to get out and find shelter at Neatishead as we have done. Please say hello in the morning! Hopefully the wind won't be so strong for the rest of the week (cross fingers). And hopefully you'll be able to find moorings where the wind helps you to moor up, and not blow you off. We moored up earlier at Gay's Staithe for water and even there the wind was tending to blow us off the mooring...I should have ignored Graham reminding me that the water intake was on the port side and moored up the other side.
  7. Yes, that's what was behind the reason to make for Neatishead. It had been very choppy on our home mooring overnight and we hadn't had the best sleep. (It didn't help that we had a gap beside us.) When I woke this morning the first thing I did was to check the weather forecast. Seeing the wind would be increasing by mid-morning we decided to get on our way as soon as possible, so as to get under Ludham Bridge before it got too strong. Indeed, and Acle! Last year we stopped at Stokesby BA moorings when there was a strong south-westerly. Bow slap was something chronic! I wouldn't recommend Hardley Mill in a strong easterly either! Just over 6'4', so no chance!
  8. After How Hill we made our way to Wayford Bridge. Graham stayed on the boat whilst Alec and I walked the short distance to AG Meale & Sons Farm Shop and Vera's Coffee Shop. Very impressed with both. We were lucky to get a table in the coffee shop as we arrived after 11.30 and most of the tables had been reserved for lunchtime. Clearly a popular place. We are now tucked up in Neatishead again, with Silver Cloud behind us.
  9. We've swapped sons. Alec has now joined us. On our way up the Ant. It's rather windy this morning and there was only 7 1/4 foot on the advance marker for Ludham Bridge, so we took both roof and screen down. Luckily it's a dry morning and the sun has now come out. Pipedreams passed us whilst we were moored at How Hill for a dog run. No doubt on the way to Ranworth.
  10. Yes I think so. The only part of the ruins that don't date back to the monks time is the mill tower that was constructed with the old gatehouse.
  11. Well keep an eye out for you Simon. Wave if you see us passing!
  12. There has been quite a lot of boat shuffling this afternoon. Ranworth Breeze is back on her mooring and Evening Shadow has just been lifted out and is in the process of being taken into the shed.
  13. A day in the marina for me. Graham took Harry back to MK this morning and is now on his way back with Alec. I had a moderately long walk this morning, first along Lower Street where I popped into the Post Office to buy a card and small present for my cousin's birthday and a padded envelope to send them in. The lady in the shop part was very knowledgeable about Arthur Ransome and generally things local. The have a collection of second hand books about Ransome. I also noticed a flyer which was advertising a new cafe that has opened up in St Catherine's church, Ludham. That might be worth checking out. After posting my parcel I made my way up the hill toward Upper Street and found a footpath between the houses on the junction of the Neatishead road which led over a field to a lane. I turned left and then right to join Long Lane that runs behind Bewilderwood. Just beyond the rear entrance to Bewilderwood there was a permissive footpath that runs parallel with the lane. It rejoins the lane further along and shortly after I was able to take a path back to the main road that ran along the eastern boundary of Bewilderwood. After that I just made my way back to the marina. I'm not sure how far I walked but was out about two and a half hours.
  14. Beeston St Lawrence? No I haven't visited that one yet. I been prioritising churches with rood screens. I gather it has a lot of memorials to the Paston family.
  15. Best screen, in my opinion is Barton Turf, easily walkable from Neatishead or Paddy’s Lane. Very close second, some would say first, is Ranworth. I do have a slight (?) obsession with rood screens, so have visited quite a lot of other churches in the vicinity. Catfield is walkable from Wood End Staithe. Others like Worstead and East Ruston depend on a car journey. Upton and Irstead also have rood screens, though not to the same quality and more damaged. For those interested in Norfolk and Suffolk churches, there are a couple of very good websites compiled by the same guy. http://www.norfolkchurches.co.uk/mainpage.htm http://www.suffolkchurches.co.uk/churchlists.htm
  16. Thank you Vaughan. A lovely piece of the Broads history which deserves being recorded.
  17. Oops! No we didn’t go to Scotland. Actually, Salhouse wasn’t that great. Sure, the dogs had a run but Seren had a real barking session at the swans that had hissed at her and then Pozzick sneaked under a barbed wire fence into a field and ate something (horse poo?). Today didn’t quite go as planned. We thought we’d spend the night at Ranworth but have ended back in Horning Pleasurecraft on our home mooring again. Harry and Graham are travelling back to MK tomorrow morning and would like to start off early’ish.
  18. On our way to Dalhousie this morning. We're not intending to stay long...just thought it would be a good place for a doggy run.
  19. Isn’t Thurne church delightful. I loved the old fashioned lights. Did you find the peep hole at one end of the church that looks directly in the direction of St Benet’s?
  20. I did get the impression that Cromer is very well endowed with cafes. Spoiled for choice. We went to Hatter's Tea Room. Very nice it was too.
  21. I’ve voted for the first date too as we’ll be on Moonlight Shadow.
  22. No we didn’t, and at least one cafe had a sign outside saying they didn’t have any crab. Probably too early after the holiday. I didn’t find a crab stall either. Shame, I love a fresh crab sandwich.
