  1. Well this is a forum so I'll pitch in with my complete lack of experience of marine engines but with a fresh pair of eyes (well 67 years old and with the help of Specsavers): looking at the effects of rusty water I would guess that there may have been a crack there for a while before it gave way altogether? Even zooming in though, I can't decide whether or not the break surfaces are clean or corroded, as clue as to how long it's been broken. Would there have been other clues like high engine temperature? Fumes? It would be nice to hear the full story from the OP eventually. The lesson for us all I think is to have a butcher's around the engine on a regular basis. The term "desperate" as used by the OP doesn't have to mean imminent crisis; sometimes it means "I've just run out of ideas". I hope he's ok though.
  2. ...but what if is unlicensed?
  3. How about converting Horning PO into a factory for making brown envelopes? We need ingredients like shredded documents and brown stuff. Delivery costs would be minimal. Don't answer.
  4. I've just noticed, and I may be the only one, but are you two twins? I'm looking at your pics above.
  5. Absolutely. Gentle walking for about 15 minutes minimum to get heat body generating is enough for us. They reckon swimming is a good one but I have no budgie smugglers so that's out.
  6. I hope your boat cleaning service is robust. I have sent a message to someone I know who may be looking for a mooring and may know others too. Probably not on the forum though.
  7. When we went to the E-Grand Pix last summer I kept setting the security alarm off and had to have a bag search everytime we went back ito the arena. My son and grandson thought it was hilarious. I think I may have been born with a replacement hip?
  8. Our local sub post office used to be at the back of the shop as a separate section with full glass screens etc. Now, same shop, it's part of the till area with partial glass screens so that staff can multi task. I wonder how they make anything from parcels which I can pay for online cheaper, then take there for them to print the label and keep it for collection? They take Evri parcels now too in understand. They can't be making a fortune but fair play to them for making a living and giving experience to youngsters.
  9. I think we take heating for granted until it gets cold. I looked into this when the gas prices started to rocket. When we were working the base temp was 15C but went up to 19C from 6.30 to 8.30am. Then 19C again from 5 to 9.30pm. Now retired the morning is set 7 to 9am. During the day we have to put some decent clothes on or get our a**es moving somewhere; the telly stays off! If we do stay in we just boost the heating up as required. We sometimes go to auctions and see people sitting there without bidding. My wife comments that they only go so that they don't have to put the heating on at home. When I was working and getting home very late I bought an electric greenhouse heater for our smallest bedroom where the PC is, to save heating the whole house. It's still here like an old friend and it had a second life during lockdown when I worked from home. Hot water again, we take for granted until fails. Our conventional system is of course designed for four people, with a huge copper tank. The tank in our caravan is 13 litres and that's enough (without a bath) which is why I installed one of similar size in the boat. At home we heat the water for an hour in the morning and again early evening and that's just about enough but again, it's boosted when needed. Attic is insulated, cavity walls were done for free a while ago but one of the best things we did recently was to put a curtain up on the inside of the front door. Our porch area has always been cold and we were advised to put a radiator in there years ago, which we did. It made a slight improvement but it was never satisfactory. I lined the services cupboard with polystyrene foam to little effect but fitting the lined, swinging curtain has made a huge difference, even though the front door a upvc insulated jobby. A bit old fashioned but so what.
  10. I made a Youtube video about the problem and a guy has just commented: He had a cooker of the same model delivered yesterday and having seen my video, noticed a slight difference to the way the oven lights. He rang Hotpoint who told him that since August 2023 they have changed the gas safe device to the conventional type! So why not offer me the new model then?
  11. One consistant thing I've heard from people who have had replacement joints is the immense relief from the pain. I would have no fear if I ever needed one. FIL had a ceramic hip so early in his life that he wore it out! His knees went but by that time they advised his heart probably wouldn't stand the strain of the ops. Poor sod took the pain well without complaint. He played a lot of sport in his younger days, a fast bowler for the local cricket team, and football every weekend.
  12. Comes with a nice view; you can see all the way to the horizon.
  13. Thank you MT, I'm going to have that printed onto a T-shirt, no, on second thoughts, a winter fleece, for Mrs Raser!
  14. Your boat has replacement hips? My late father in law had three replacement hips.
  15. At the risk of sounding a bit daft (which has never been a barrier anyway!) have you looked for the phone number? Round here, when the numbers went to 6 digits they just added two numbers on the front and they are still the same today.
  16. I can't remember exactly but I think it was the bloke who delivered our first "new" cooker in November 2022 who commented on our old conventional boiler. He recommended that I should change it if not for a combi, for a new conventional type with electronic ignition instead of a pilot light, to save gas. Glad I didn't in light of the above but if I did I think we worked out that I would have live another 50 years to be in profit!
  17. It may not happen often but here's someting to beware of if you need to buy a new cooker. With the best will in the World Hotpoint Cannon have tried to update their cookers to fit in with modern ideas of saving gas/climate change etc. but it's faltered slightly. We had an old Cannon cooker for donkey's years until it failed in 2022. As we were approaching retirement we thought we would have a decent new one as it would (should!) be our last. So we replaced it with the updated Cannon model which replaced ours, in November 2022. Next Sunday 24.01.2024 Curry's are delivering a new Beko cooker and our "new" one has been written off by curry's and Cannon as scrap! And I mean scrap; I am free to do what I want with it. Luckily we had the 5 year careplan as it packed up after 13 months so we have had all but £15 of all our money back including the delivery and fitting charges. In the Ts and Cs it says if they can't repair it we get a replacement. The replacement is an e-gift card for the value. The problem is with the new electronic flame failure device, or gas safe device. It's a bit like the eco function of a car where the engine stops and restarts automatically at junctions etc. When you turn on the main oven there is no spring to overcome, you don't have to press the **** in, just twist. A light comes on and there's a clicking to light the gas. When the oven get's to temperature it just switches off completely until it cools, then re-lights automatically all through the cooking cycle. But it doesn't. After a while they fail and your cooking stops part way through. It's either bad design or they haven't tested the system enough before putting it out on the market. When the engineer came out he went straight to the problem and told us what it was, then said they would order the parts. After 7 days I rang and they said it would be written off. I understand it's a common problem with Hotpoint Cannon models and some Rangemaster models. Our new Beko is conventional! When I went back to Curry's to buy the new one I asked if it had an electronic flame failure device, he looked blank! So much for their adverts where girls have beards of wisdom and they all eat the instruction manuals! Maybe I should have asked him in Japanese!
  18. I just did a quick google search and found a website under construction at https://www.broads-reform.org/ I heard they had the intention, let's hope it's up and running soon.
  19. I think it's there somewhere. By the nature of it, there has to be stuff going on behind the scenes but the committee do report every so often what is being done.
  20. No, Peter Waller is NOT the main driving forces behind that organisation. Let's perfectly clear, that is an easy assumption to make. He and anyone else of similar experience have open access to contribute their opinion. Colin Chet is the main driving force along with others and Peter is just the moderator of the webpage. He has in the past, had to be pulled up by Colin for allowing thread drifts on there! I have been watching BRAG from the start and Peter's early contributions were surprising. He was actually expressing himself in a very dignified manner, in a constructive way and passing on the benefit of his vast experience. I thought he's either learned from his experience on this forum or had a bang on the head but I say well done; I wondered if it was the same person! Peter was mentioned because he was the one who started this thread, no other reason. I don't doubt his ambition or where his heart is, it's just the way he expressed himself on this forum which has been, let's just say, not quite as effective as it could have been, and leave it at that. I should also add that I have actually met the man and shook his hand. It was when he came to the Denham Owl to collect the mains fridge I gave him for his daughter to use when she was a medical student. While all you old boys should be listened to for the benefit of past expeiences, the future of the Broads should be in the hands of those who live there and those of working age who have a future there. Not even me, as someone who pays for moorings and tolls; I can just upsticks and leave whenever I please. Every so often we have a vote to find out if we want our village to become a town. While the good people of Norfolk are entitled to an opinion as to whether that should happen, I would be pretty hacked off if they had a vote. Edit: BRAG do not discuss the Nation Park issue as they say it would be a distraction. One thing at a time, remove JP first.
  21. Well Vaughan, we'll have to disagree on that one; I think mine was a fair comment. I came here in 2018 as a new member and was constantly leaned on to say and think in a certain way, and told who I should respect, but not why. Like it was some kind of Old Boys Club. JM was as you say passionate about the subject but to the point of obsession. The evidence is there in the archives: every week a national park thread, constant bumping up of threads to keep them going, automatic "liking" of one's mate's posts. As I said before, it's just a forum and some people attach far too much importance to the content. Just because he's an old mate of yours doesn't put him above criticism for going public with his views.
  22. Yep, it's truly a forum alright. That reads like I believe my ideals are the right ones. Not so. I just pointed out that whoever is making the decisions are doing a good job and I like what they are doing. If I didn't, I would go elsewhere. But It's a forum so you are free to interpret a view in a certain way so as to punctuate your own.
  23. Because people like you and I Fred, keep hitting the keyboard. It's just a harmless forum. This thread started as one of Jenny Morgan's weekly "lets keep the national park in the top of the top ten threads" actions. His legacy is still with us obviously.
  24. It would seem that some people are so single minded about this National Park debate that they just don't want to hear anything about a National Park that is actually successful. The point I'm trying to make is that the success is down to those who embrace the idea and make it work, even with ups and downs. If the Broads could find a way, and find a trusted body to administer it.... It's a shame it can't be seen as a golden opportunity for the right reasons. It could be done for the future and with every respect for the past, it just needs work and some flexible ideas.
  25. Yes, businesses were given 5 years to adapt, so why were there boat sales businesses there still selling fast boats way after that date? Probably as a protest but still no surprise if they went. The guardians of the Lakes are doing a good job of avoiding the fate of places like Newquay, Cornwall. It's where my youngest son did his courting/partying in the 90s. He finds it depressing now to see all the same venues still there, boarded up. Boom and bust. I was up in the Lake District from Monday to Thursday last week. The hotel was as busy as I've ever seen it. We still had to queue for the buses which soon filled up. In early January. The Lakes are about the beauty of the place. Plenty of old quarries about to have a venue for fast boats and jetskis. How about a few pot plant festooned narrowboats on Windermere? I'm sure someone could argue a right to live on one, affordable housing for the poor and all that. See what that would do for tourism!
