  1. Why should our insurance go up to cover the risks of EV's? It shouldn't!
  2. That happens with mine most years. I just ring them and they'll ask for the quote number and check it, then match it. When they don't, I move to the next best well known name. I'm almost looking forward to the renewal of the Corsa insurance next Feb. If it goes by much I'll flog the Corsa.
  3. I just wonder if they've let the figure of 10% escape so that they can settle on 9% and claim they're being generous.
  4. We enjoyed Holt a few years ago and it's on our list of must visit agains. But beware, it's a very popular place and the last time we tried to get there we gave up because of lack of parking. That was a busy weekend though, not a problem now we've retired so it's back on the cards.
  5. What is it with dogs and sand? You just have to disturb the surface and in they go with the front paws, 19 to the dozen, then the snout goes in and comes out, sand all over place. Can't be comfortable. Great to watch though.
  6. You can use Tesco points to purchase the railcard. The actual two for ones are through the railcard website. Just check the Tesco thing first as it may be a time limited thing. I don't have a Tesco card myself.
  7. And on a lighter note...................... First, get a railcard. Any railcard. It's 30 quid, or nothing if you have Tesco points. Apart from 1/3 off rail travel you also get discounted days out. We did the Cutty Sark with a two for one deal at the end of August and yesterday we did Westminster Abbey, two for £27 instead of £54, so there's your railcard paid for again! It was great to be able to relate to what we have been seeing on tv lately but I was amazed by the amount of stuff inside the abbey which is never shown. There are innumerable monuments to the great and the good and with a bit of research, maybe the not so good. So many that some are hidden behind others. An incredible amount of work must have gone into the carving and stone mason work and parts are showing the results of the millions of people brushing past over the years. It was very busy and we were always in a bit of a crowd so not the kind of place to be enjoyed in a group I wouldn't think. I accidentally trod on Charles Darwin and I think David Livingstone. At least, I presume it was him. Cream tea in the cafe was very reasonable. Well worth the trip and like the Tower of London, makes you proud to be British. Then to London Bridge and a walk along the south bank of the Thames to Hornimans, level with the pointy bit of HMS Belfast. They do Timothy Taylors Landlord and Adnams gin along with the best fish and chips we've had in ages at a very reasonable price – for London. It got very noisy though, once we moved inside to eat and the city workers piled in for apres work drinkypoos. St Paul's for the next trip but that two for one runs out mid December.
  8. Yes, and it probably started with a caveman wanting more paintings of buffalo on his walls than Ug Jones next rock! I saw grown ups doing it in the early sixties and don't tell me you haven't noticed the race to get the modern house to show several shades of grey, along with a flat grey coloured car? It's in our DNA.
  9. I have got back to them and they feel it's still too much to risk their kids being bored, compared to the alternatives. I think it significant that although Dad has a boat on the Broads they still never considered it as a holiday in the first place. We have hired a day boat on the canal a couple of times so it's not that they are against boats. But within their social circle everyone goes abroad. One parent has expressed the view that when a teacher asks young pupils where they went on holiday, most of them answer abroad and they didn't want their kids to feel second class. Not a view I share! But whenever I think about holiday ads on tv they all seem to be overseas apart from the odd Park Dean ad. Maybe the Broads needs a TV campaign.
  10. I don't know what they paid for Ibiza but I'll ask the question what WOULD you pay to try a week on the Broads.
  11. Well I did collect them and I did ask them. Who are they? A couple in their early 40s, two good incomes, three kids. They went all inclusive to Ibiza Sat to Sat, half term week. Have you ever considered a boating holiday on the Broads? No. Why not? Just hadn't thought about it, but wouldn't rule it out. Three grand a week? Never! Wouldn't spend three grand to stay in Norfolk unless it was in a house with a pool and decent weather. Alternatives abroad are more appealing at that price. I should point out that they also have a large tent and enjoy the self catering aspect of camping so it's not even the boat handling that puts them off.
  12. Oh dear, soory to hear about your loss, we are still doing the same same with my MIL's stuff. Not found anything interesting like that though. Like Karizma has pointed out, it's an old fashioned flight computer but the broad arrow, or "crowsfoot", shows it's ex military. I think they've been superceeded by electronics now but I believe the student pilot has to learn how to use one just in case... So therefore still useable? They are used for estimating wind drift among other things. A pilot could tell us, I have one in the attic somewhere along with a WW2 bomber sextant.
  13. I use a normal 2kw fan heater to get the garage warmish then switch to two wall hung heaters to maintain it, so I can hear the radio. In extreme cold I use a Clarke Little Devil propane jobby which is a bit of an overkill; it's toastie in about 3 minutes.
  14. Someone will correct me if I'm wrong (again!) but I thought that if excessive ice is present It's also most likely blocking the elements of the heat exchanger thingy where you can't get at it. Best make arrangements for the food and leave the frezer to thaw naturally for a day?
  15. Reviews: sometimes people just want to tell the world what great taste they have and how clever they are by always choosing a place that's perfect. On Tripadvisor you can click on the reviewer and see all their contributions so it's easy to see those above, or those who always complain.
  16. Just an observation: looking at the videos on the Norfolk Broads 1981 thread it seems they were very busy in the early sixties. So a time when holidays abroad were not for the masses, families generally had only one car, Mrs stayed at home to bring up the kids, and yet the broads were very busy. So now we have two incomes, two cars, loads of spare cash - tempt us (not litterally of course, I'm retired!). This Saturday I'm collecting my son, his wife and three kids from the airport after their all inclusive stay in Ibetha. How much cheaper would a holiday on the Broads have to be to tempt them? I'll ask them.
  17. Not sure if this has been posted but Woods are doing 40% off for October.
  18. If there are rules what are the consequence of infringement? The cable rules referred to suggest health and safety to me. If someone is using the wrong cable it would be easily visible and therefore relatively easy to deal with on an individual basis. Consistant violators would be found out. Stealing electricity, I would think, requires a little more stealth.
  19. Could it be that someone has found a way to get free electricity from the posts and now the BA has to go away and find a way of making the posts tamper proof? And if so, what would be the best thing to do in the meantime, just let them get away with it? I watched the video. All I could see was some blokes just getting on with their work, not looking guilty or shady, not ashamed of working for the BA. I don't see anyone having a go at liveaboards.
  20. I'm sure there's comedy in that title somewhere? I just wondered if anyone has any recent experience of changing one of these seals? I've seen adverts for seal rubber which claims to be for a variety of hatches but I want to get it right first time. I'm guessing the default advice is to follow the instructions on Houdini's website, and that is to take a pic and send them the sizes etc. They don't give an indication of the price though, unless I've missed it.
  21. Plenty of fish in our marina on the Yare, including pike. It's private though.
  22. Only the head of the household is allowed to tap the barometer. We call ours "The Admiral", after Fitzroy. We got it from this guy a few years ago: http://www.barometerworld.co.uk/ Interesting character.
  23. Erm.. can I play trains too? I have long promised myself one of these and had it pencilled in for when the boat was sold. Unfortunately that's an ongoing situation. We grabbed a day out last weekend in between weather fronts and visited the Avoncroft Museum of Buildings at Bromsgrove. Nice place, a bit run down, but it shares land with the Bromsgrove Model Engineering Society. As we leaned against their gate we noticed a sign saying there was a private party going on so do not enter. As we stood there a kindly gent asked if we like to come in. We pointed out the sign and he that would be fine "as I am the Chairman!" The first loco round was a 5" guage Simplex and I pointed out to Mrs Raser that was the very model I was after. She said, "Well if you want one, have one." Now as every experienced married man knows, you have to strike before the wind changes direction! So yesterday I picked this one up from Station Road Steam in Metheringham, Lincolnshire. Well you didn't expect me to get a new one did you?
  24. Snowdon etc for next year but we may grab a couple of days in the caravan near Chester. The mainline railway from Chester to Bangor looks to hug the coast, does anyone know if it's worth the trip? Yes it's been a bad year by the way....
