  1. Well I've nothing better to do so I've just watched both of the above videos and I have to say I think you're being more than a little unfair to have a go at Volvo's reputation. I think you said the mileage was 127K when you bought it, from an address in London, with scratches on the door. I would have run a mile! Even if it was a Toyota! Did you also see their receipts before you bought it? I wouldn't say it's been looked after; they weren't bothered about the deep scratches so it wasn't their pride and joy. You never know how the cars been driven on a daily basis but in London that usually means short journeys with a lot of start-stop trips. Main dealers like to change the timing belt at around 60k to 70k so it was due one when you bought it. Although Volvo themselves say the belt is actually OK for 110k to 120k, depends how brave you are. I think it was a brave gamble to buy the car, I've done the same with boats!
  2. Well whoever he's married to, whoever you went to school with, whoever his mother-in-law used to race with, he, and a lot of other people have been unable to shift JP from his lofty perch for donkey's years. Then BRAG came along and five MPs are involved. Coincidence? As a toll payer I would prefer the BA and any other agencies involved to be run by the right people, not another group of mates looking after each other. As I said before, BRAG managed Facebook and while it was not perfect, part of it involved actions behind the scenes because obviously, discussing every last detail on the public platform would have left them open to trolls. And when anything happened behind closed doors they let people know. They made every effort to avoid closing the group.
  3. By whom other than the BA? Apart from the science as explained by Griff, what is the criteria by which the status of "commercial waterway" is measured? What would be the minimum requirement? If we paid someone to transport a bag of coal from Yarmouth to Norwich and back once a year? Anyone know anyone who owns a coaster?
  4. I beg to differ. I know relatively little about James Knight (before anyone chirps up to remind me so!) but from what I have learned about him during my VERY SHORT experience of the Broads I have come to recognise him as being a very brave man indeed. However, I doubt whether he alone could have inspired the amount of actions that BRAG must have in their short exsistence. Nothing can be proven of course but I doubt James could have inspired so many people to influence five MPs; I think they are interested in more votes than just his one. My opinion of Facebook has never changed, it's awful. BRAG have identified their enemies strengths and weaknesses from the start and one of those "enemies" has been Facebook itself. The main committee have used it as well as anyone could have done in my opinion. I think it is they who have galvanised everyone into action, even those who think their thunder is about to be stolen. I think it is BRAG and their influence which has filtered through other media like this forum, who have in some small way inspired so many people to write or take other action. Well done BRAG. Edit: I agree some elements need removing but best not to go into detail, especially here!
  5. Hmm. Didn't I hint at something like the above and get the "who do you think you are?" treatment? JP will probably hang around long enough to organise himself a nice golden handshake. A secret handshake probably.
  6. I think the letter above is seismic. Effectively being accused of abusing the system by five MPs is going to be hard to survive. I would expect a sensible person to consider their future over the weekend but I have this vision of John Sergeant on the steps of Yare House with JP interupting him and saying, "We will fight on..."
  7. My XC90 will be 10 years old in June. Apart from the brakes after 5 years I've had no problems, 76k miles. Not the quality build I was expecting but it's sooo comfortable I would miss it.
  8. We tried it Tuesday 28th, four of us for lunch, and loved it. They have indeed removed the choice of banging your head on the low beam or tripping down the step as you walk in, but I'll forgive them for that. They have also installed some young, bright and enthusiastic staff. I didn't see Broadside so I tried the Adnams stout for the first time, very nice thanks. A good menu of light lunches and full meals at reasonable prices. I had the lasagne from the light menu and it was spot on. I thought there was a fear it was going to be an upmarket restaurant, no, it's well thought out local pub. I may have even spotted “the last of the summer wine” - the three old guys who always hogged the end of the bar - but they were in the new saloon bar where the pool table is. Yep, we'll be back there again in the not too distant future, and I still owe OBB a pint.
  9. Good recycling! I would hope the wiring is designed to be left in a field for most of it's life so it should be tough. I hope mine is anyway! Apart from what Smoggy has pointed out, they are looking for a neat and organised installation and it sounds like you'll have that covered. Alternatively, strip the plastic off and weigh it in.
  10. Is it just me or does anyone else see those drone shots and wish they had a joystick to control it? I always want to see the bit to the left or right! Nice video though.
  11. Haven't they also spent a couple of fortunes down in Suffolk? I thought they did it once then a flood overtopped it, so they did it again. I can't remember it clearly but I think it was around the time I bought my first boat from Andy Seedhouse in 2015.
  12. Nearly. They adopted this plan I think...
  13. I know there are some good people there, I have had dealings with them and they have helped me out. I also aknowledge that whatever I've done, you will have done more. So he's employing someone in a cushy job for £47k with not much to do. I would keep quiet and take the money for that but then you say it's 42.5% below what that person could earn elsewhere. Well there's the old saying "if you pays peanuts you gets monkeys". But we've sort of agreed there are good people there so something doesn't seem to stack up. So when this new person starts they will be told: These are the people you will respect..... You will not have fresh ideas of your own, you will be told what to think and say. We are not interested in any of your experiences outside of this establishment. This is how we have done things for years and we will carry on the same way. Fail to comply with the above and you will witness our displeasure. I know the feeling. On the planet INDUSTRY where I come from we stopped promoting people on the basis of time served, years ago. To beat the competition we have to identify their weaknesses and acknowledge their strengths. Strengths can't be identified if judgement is clouded by overwhelming hate. Probably best if I keep my oily hands out of it and enjoy my retirement.
  14. How about a reduction in tolls and insurance for the fitting of a "Black Box" to a boat? Sorry, I know it's not my place to make suggestions, I've only been here 5 years.
  15. No, my knowledge of the Broads is limited to what I have seen since 2018 and I say what I see based on my experience of such, and the World outside the Broads (there is one) where normal things happen.
  16. That seems to assume the people left care a toss. Do we have evidence that these people were removed or did they leave because of their conscience? Maybe he's recruited from the financial industry like the people I had to deal with over my mortgage. Or from the sales industry. I'm thinking about staff at a high level, not those struggling for work. How do the salaries within Yare House compare to what could be earned elsewhere? That could also be an influence.
  17. I wouldn't be be too quick to celebrate if/when JP finally goes. By focussing on him people seem not to notice the lack of whistle blowers. I would prefer to see a complete clear out.
  18. I get this: you've been confused by the Ranworth thread where they keep referring to car parks. I shudder to think where you've put the car!
  19. Well done James Knight and well done BRAG. It's surely going to be difficult to defend actions if they are proven to be unlawful.
  20. Timely that Google are celebrating Doctor Victor Chang today. Never heard of him before but we owe a lot to him and others.
  21. What's all this about swans? It was surely Dick Dastardly, Mutley and a Pigeon.
  22. Main dealer servicing is compulsary for the duration of a new car warranty usually, so with a 7 year warranty are you committing to 7 main dealer priced services? For £128 above, how many hours labour would that be? But, then you get the bonus of FSH on the vehicle's record and how much is that worth? Hard to call but easy for those of us who find it easy to do our own services. In 1996 I bought a six month old Peugeot from a main dealer and just after the warranty expired the rear bakes failed badly, locking the wheels! In 2013 the Volvo came new with 4 services for £400. A couple of months after the last service I had to replace all four discs and the pads! The cynic in me thinks that manufacturers may be making it difficult for independants by tweaking the technology. As if they would...
  23. Thanks for that info. I checked the King's Head prices - hmmm. Did you know the Co-op do a meal deal for 4 quid? I have used the Travelodge at Acle a few times especially in the winter, as it's only 6 miles from my boat. I used to get over Friday after work and have a comfy night to make best use of the limited daylight next day. I did the same the other week as it's still usually only £29 for Sunday night. There's an M&S Food at the service station but I never knew about the Co-op. A lot of places are doing a meal deal (a light lunch) for about £4.
  24. I had an old outboard to play with a few years ago so I googled it to see what it looked like. It's a piano.
