  1. Oh dear, soory to hear about your loss, we are still doing the same same with my MIL's stuff. Not found anything interesting like that though. Like Karizma has pointed out, it's an old fashioned flight computer but the broad arrow, or "crowsfoot", shows it's ex military. I think they've been superceeded by electronics now but I believe the student pilot has to learn how to use one just in case... So therefore still useable? They are used for estimating wind drift among other things. A pilot could tell us, I have one in the attic somewhere along with a WW2 bomber sextant.
  2. I use a normal 2kw fan heater to get the garage warmish then switch to two wall hung heaters to maintain it, so I can hear the radio. In extreme cold I use a Clarke Little Devil propane jobby which is a bit of an overkill; it's toastie in about 3 minutes.
  3. Someone will correct me if I'm wrong (again!) but I thought that if excessive ice is present It's also most likely blocking the elements of the heat exchanger thingy where you can't get at it. Best make arrangements for the food and leave the frezer to thaw naturally for a day?
  4. Reviews: sometimes people just want to tell the world what great taste they have and how clever they are by always choosing a place that's perfect. On Tripadvisor you can click on the reviewer and see all their contributions so it's easy to see those above, or those who always complain.
  5. Just an observation: looking at the videos on the Norfolk Broads 1981 thread it seems they were very busy in the early sixties. So a time when holidays abroad were not for the masses, families generally had only one car, Mrs stayed at home to bring up the kids, and yet the broads were very busy. So now we have two incomes, two cars, loads of spare cash - tempt us (not litterally of course, I'm retired!). This Saturday I'm collecting my son, his wife and three kids from the airport after their all inclusive stay in Ibetha. How much cheaper would a holiday on the Broads have to be to tempt them? I'll ask them.
  6. Not sure if this has been posted but Woods are doing 40% off for October.
  7. If there are rules what are the consequence of infringement? The cable rules referred to suggest health and safety to me. If someone is using the wrong cable it would be easily visible and therefore relatively easy to deal with on an individual basis. Consistant violators would be found out. Stealing electricity, I would think, requires a little more stealth.
  8. Could it be that someone has found a way to get free electricity from the posts and now the BA has to go away and find a way of making the posts tamper proof? And if so, what would be the best thing to do in the meantime, just let them get away with it? I watched the video. All I could see was some blokes just getting on with their work, not looking guilty or shady, not ashamed of working for the BA. I don't see anyone having a go at liveaboards.
  9. I'm sure there's comedy in that title somewhere? I just wondered if anyone has any recent experience of changing one of these seals? I've seen adverts for seal rubber which claims to be for a variety of hatches but I want to get it right first time. I'm guessing the default advice is to follow the instructions on Houdini's website, and that is to take a pic and send them the sizes etc. They don't give an indication of the price though, unless I've missed it.
  10. Plenty of fish in our marina on the Yare, including pike. It's private though.
  11. Only the head of the household is allowed to tap the barometer. We call ours "The Admiral", after Fitzroy. We got it from this guy a few years ago: http://www.barometerworld.co.uk/ Interesting character.
  12. Erm.. can I play trains too? I have long promised myself one of these and had it pencilled in for when the boat was sold. Unfortunately that's an ongoing situation. We grabbed a day out last weekend in between weather fronts and visited the Avoncroft Museum of Buildings at Bromsgrove. Nice place, a bit run down, but it shares land with the Bromsgrove Model Engineering Society. As we leaned against their gate we noticed a sign saying there was a private party going on so do not enter. As we stood there a kindly gent asked if we like to come in. We pointed out the sign and he that would be fine "as I am the Chairman!" The first loco round was a 5" guage Simplex and I pointed out to Mrs Raser that was the very model I was after. She said, "Well if you want one, have one." Now as every experienced married man knows, you have to strike before the wind changes direction! So yesterday I picked this one up from Station Road Steam in Metheringham, Lincolnshire. Well you didn't expect me to get a new one did you?
  13. Snowdon etc for next year but we may grab a couple of days in the caravan near Chester. The mainline railway from Chester to Bangor looks to hug the coast, does anyone know if it's worth the trip? Yes it's been a bad year by the way....
  14. And as part of our retirement there is a bucket list with (ready....) Yr Wyddfa on it. It says Snowdon. But I'm having second thoughts now as I would like to return from the place alive with all my limbs in place. Is it safe to visit the Blaenau Ffestiniog railway or is there a chance that Alec Guiness will blow up one of the bridges as we cross? I thought the only problem would be the rain.
  15. Our first attempt at retirement was back in April when Mrs Raser packed up work. It lasted about a week before circumstances put it on hold. As soon as we were able to try again there was a heatwave. Then we finally managed to get out at the weekend and Monday - now it's on hold again while this storm blows over. I turned down work to do this!
  16. I'm not sure the Oliver Twist sounds attractive to someone with a family who's just paid three grand to hire a boat, unless it also has outside dining with a decent view, at reasonable prices? In the other ear I've been told to avoid GY like the plague. I've recently been to London twice as a tourist - £6.50 to £7 a pint and the places are all packed. So according to this forum Wroxham/Hoveton is going downhill, pubs are closing or expensive and there's few places to visit with easy mooring. Maybe there should be a reduced rate toll for us floating caravanners.
  17. Mouldy makes videos and he says it's the correct thing to do so go for it!
  18. What about the times you are walking around a tourist type place and people are wondering around holding out their smart phones in front of them, making videos? Whatever the law regarding privacy I abandon mine and wave in front of them. I'm probably famous in parts of Asia.
  19. George Thompson, local democracy reporter. Looks like a character from Miss Marple. But anyway: "Senior members of the Broads Authority (BA) have warned that a triple whammy of poor weather, cost-of-living pressures and controversial toll increases had hammered some boating businesses." His words in print but has he used the word "controversial" to embelish the article or do the "senior members of the Broads Authority" say it's controversial? Subtle but important difference; if it's the latter then it would seem to indicate that some members didn't agree with the increase, or did but are now having second thoughts. I doubt it. It's the EDP so probably just their version of what they loosely call journalism.
  20. "Hello. Are you having a nice holiday? Well I just wondered if you are anywhere near to the marina as your car alarm is going off. I wouldn't want you to come back to a flat battery. Not to mention it's chuffing annoying!"
  21. I for one, would pay to see the video!
  22. As I read through theis thread I started to make a similar comparison to bikes on the road. In my opinion, in these days of busy roads it's just too dangerous to cycle on a main road anywhere. Paddleboarder's cause is not helped by those who are not happy to paddle along in quiet waters, but prefer to be in the thick of it, in the main boating channels. And not just on the Broads, we saw this just last week down at Itchenor. How long before we see paddleboards bristling with GoPros, resulting in Youtube videos showing how uncaring and reckless boat helms are? Leading to a set of rules giving PBs all the authority on the water. Unfortunately history shows we need rules because we can't be trusted to use our common sense.
  23. Probably the same people who say they were "reversing backwards" in the car.
  24. Sometimes business strategy is not linear. They would be considering the competition from Poundland and Home Bargains among others. Not buying a store could be allowing the opposition easy access to your doorstep.
  25. Whatever the rules may be and where ever you are on holiday, I always think that noise late in the evening would make it difficult for those with young children, trying to get them to sleep. I was taught that consideration of others is more important than my choice to do whatever I want. "I'm sorry, I wasn't told the rules" = "Whoops, I tried it on and and got caught".
