  1. Barrier at HW still raised as at 0825 hrs this morning, I did notice yesterday that there are a few boats in the marina with people on board, I hope that their holiday hasn't been too badly affected! Chris
  2. Just seen on HW's webcam that they have the salt water surge barrier down. Chris
  3. Ok hope that means either you're back in the wetshed and all is good and you're on your way back up Norf or you've got no wifi! Chris
  4. Hi Vaughan, that's a coincidence! I posted a link to a news report about the amount of dead fish due to the salt surge a couple of days ago. Admittedly, I posted it on my Holiday tales thread (The 2 W's Afloat in Oct 22) as we are hoping to have a decent bit of fishing during our week afloat). Perhaps in hindsight I should have posted it in the Fishing section Chris
  5. https://www.greatyarmouthmercury.co.uk/news/saltwater-surge-kills-thousands-of-fish-norfolk-broads-9284488 Hmmm - hope there's a few decent ones left when we get there! Such a shame that the excessive salt water gets pushed into the Broads when there's a situation like this Chris
  6. I'm confused While I can understand the necessity for legislation to protect individuals from unwanted exposure etc, I cannot understand why general holiday photos/videos that show boats cruising or moored up on the Broads have to be "edited" to disguise their identity? I fully understand the reason behind not showing or giving out details when an accident occurs or other incidents that may warrant privacy, (unless it is already in the public domain where every person and their dog can access it) but if I have read FairTMiddlin's post correctly, then the holiday tales section and other sections will cease to have a purpose as far as photo/video content is concerned. Please be assured I'm not trying to "stir" anything up, I'm just a little confused as to what exactly will be allowed/not allowed from this point onwards. Chris
  7. I must admit, I know the hulls etc come out of moulds but I didn't realise just how thin that hull is makes me wonder how thick the hulls are on the GRP boats that go out to sea, coastal or otherwise? Chris
  8. Aww what a cracking dog! Definitly got German Shepherd in him/her! (We currently have our 4th GSD since leaving Germany back in 1992!). Hope you can trace the owners or if not it will be placed in kennels until a home can be found for it or otherwise. Hopefully it is chipped. Chris
  9. oh dear, here we go again please let's not turn this thread into another tit for tat slanging debacle. For some of us that live outside the boating fraternity, this forum is a joy to read and particpate in, if I want to experience tit for tat messages, I'm sure there's somewhere else on the internet (not that I would!). Chris
  10. The allegiance is to the queen and her heirs etc when she was alive so that will stay in place for the current serving armed forces, all new recruits will swear allegiance to the King and his heirs. I believe RN officers do not have to swear the allegiance? Chris (Ex Army of 23 years)
  11. Awww, that's a shame was really looking forward to one of her breakfasts! Still, we'll most probably take a wander up to it just to see for ourselves. Even though it was a long time ago, we promised ourselves that we'd go back there whilst on the southern side. Chris
  12. That really is a nice boat Neil now where did I put that Lottery ticket! Chris
  13. Thanks for the heads up Kevin We're limiting ourselves to a float rod and spinning rod for Brenda and a Wonderwhip (pole) and spinning rod for myself so between us we should manage to catch something (apart from weed!). I'm expecting the waters to be a tad colder when we are there so most probably not reach your total of 100! I'll post our adventures/pics (including the fishing) once we are there (depending on the wifi coverage) or on our return. Chris
  14. Yep, spotted that cheers (Will have to deter Brenda from going in the antique shop though!) Chris
  15. H – 27 and counting A bit of preliminary voyage planning (Plan A) today. Our aim as previously stated, is that we want to cruise for a couple of days down on the southern broads, having not had the chance last year. We’re hoping that the takeover of the boat will be on time so that we can get away and get to either Stokesby (just over 2 hrs cruising from HW) or even Stracey Arms (2 and a half hrs cruising) before sunset. Having looked at the tide bands calculator published by shorebase.co.uk, sunset will be 1659 hrs so I think it’ll be a close call depending on when we can cast off from HW. We have already decided that our luggage, food, drink etc will just be placed in the boat and we’ll sort it out either en route or when we finally moor up. If we manage to get across Breydon on the Sunday morning (slack water is shown 0915 hrs) then our plan is to have a steady cruise all the way down to Beccles Yacht Station (about 5 hrs cruising hopefully with the tide!). Overnight there and then come back up to Oulton Broad for another night (Monday) stopover. Tuesday we’ll head for Loddon and stop overnight. Rosie’s tea room will definitely get a visit! Wednesday will see us crossing Breydon (slack water 1243 hrs) and making our way back up the Bure and most probably stopping at Acle for the night. Thursday and Friday’s itinerary has yet to be decided although our last night should be at Thurne Dyke! I’ve no doubt that Plan A will change to Plan B (which we haven’t worked out yet!) at some point during the week afloat . Fishing tackle is almost sorted (can’t believe how much tackle we’ve got between us from all those years fishing!) . Still to sort out – clothing including wet weather gear, food and cameras etc. (Drink is already sorted – that was the priority! ) . Chris
  16. Not quite there yet but it's H hour (Holiday hour) minus 31 and counting so I thought I'd start this blog with the slow preparation for the 7 days afloat on Supreme Light (HW). Some of you may remember that we were 4 W's afloat last Sep 21 but unfortunately our friends cannot make it this year but we have already booked for Sep 23 for the four of us, having taken advantage of the various discounts that were available so, this year we've got a slightly smaller boat but still from HW's elite range and having also booked this boat when we returned from our week afloat last year, we got the appropriate discounts as well. Last year we couldn't transit across Breydon to the South due to the tide timings being unhelpful so this year (having studied the tide table first!), we are hoping to get down South on Sunday 16th Oct 22. Then depending on the weather and whatever else crops up, we plan to do Beccles, Oulton Broad and Loddon. That's plan A, no doubt we'll end up with a Plan Z before the holiday finishes We're also for the first time, going to try and get a bit of fishing in! In a couple of weeks I'll be applying for a couple of 8 day rod licences from the gov.uk site. Between now and then though, the better half is off to Greece for a weeks holiday with her brother, his wife and a couple of others, she returns and a week later I'm off to Lanzarote for a "lads week" and then a week later we'll be together on the Broads!! So not much time to sort things out which is why we're starting the process now! Fishing tackle all sorted (we both used to fish quite a lot years ago) so it 's been a case of sorting it all out and deciding what tackle will be most apprpopriate for fishing on the Broads. I used to be a match fisherman for the Regiment when I was in the army so I've got a wide range of tackle to choose from I shall bring my pole (won't use all the sections!) and a spinning rod and Brenda will use her float rod. So that's the plan so far, updates will follow as and when there's something to write about! Chris
  17. Not being an experienced "boaty" person, I found the hydraulic bow/stern thrusters on Sovereign Light (HW) easy to use last year when on our holiday. On the initial handover I was informed to keep the revs at about 1000 rpm when in neutral which worked well. The bow thruster also worked well when navigating a few tight corners at slow speed. I knew that the higher the speed is, the less effective the thrusters are! We're on Supreme Light next month and I believe that the bow/stern thrusters on that boat are also hydraulic (but I could be wrong ). Chris
  18. We were lucky enough to watch the Globemaster fly past on its slow descent towards Northolt, don't mind admitting it brought a lump to my throat Chris
  19. 31 days to go!
  20. We used the Lion twice during our week on the Broads last year and found both the service and food to be excellent. The current economic climate will have had an impact on most businesses, especially the hospitality industry. We're on the Broads again from 15th Sep for a week but due to us wanting to cross Breydon on the Sunday morning (all things being equal), we will only be visiting the Lion on the evening before we hand the boat back. I'm sure the food and service will be ok. Chris
  21. Take over HW boat (Supreme Light) and head towards Acle (weather permitting) before transiting Breydon on Sunday morning.
