  1. Mods, I missed ChrisB's earlier post re the program, so please feel free to delete this thread. Thanks, Richard
  2. There's something magic about sailing without an engine, the extra things you hear, and what you can see as you sneak upon the wildlife. I certainly enjoyed it, thanks Chris.
  3. Escape to country on Really channel 17 freeview, in Norfolk... Now ..
  4. To post pics, go to reply then at bottom of page is a paper clip "Click to choose files." Then locate where your pics are etc. Hope it works. Richard
  5. Quantity depends on... Width of material. If there is a pattern, and is the material the same when at 90 degrees to the direction. When to use off cuts between windows, and if you can get a good enough joint. What you intend to cover. I bought enough for the wardrobe too, and for the dinette area where your legs go. As we use the shower, non in the heads. We also lined the cockpit area too, that took a lot. You must wear a dust mask when removing the old carpet, as there are fine particles which break off. There is a high chance that you will encounter black mildew behind some of the carpet, I found that "Astonish Mildew remover" around £1 a spray bottle excellent at killing and removing the spores and black stains from the GRP, leave it a while, use a damp cloth and wipe off after a suitable time. Usual precautions, as this is a bleach product. Dust mask, eye protection, organic solvents respirator are all essential for this task. As is a strong fan for ventilation, and a vacuum cleaner with fine filters. It is a good idea that a friend can look in on you every now and again, especially when using the adhesive spray, as the fumes can be quite nasty. Clearly no smoking apart from flammability, some solvents can change structure after heating and can be extremely toxic. Good luck. Richard
  6. This must be the best topic of the month, thank you Poppy for kicking it off. And he never even got a "like" on his first post, well you get a first one from me lol... Thank you to all the contributors for all the pictures and descriptions of their itinery, a brilliant piece of posting. I am so looking forward to watching this program, and recording it in triplicate too, one to DVD for the boat etc Please keep the pics and descriptions rolling, you can never get tired of this. I bet the bookings for 2018 should take off. Richard
  7. I really love the fact that we can talk about other waterways outside the Broads, after all we have all had experiences of other waterways pre Broads, during Broads, after broads and in our case all three lol. In many cases, like our Viking, it has been on several water ways, and here we are finding Broads boats country wide, I guess if we looked closer, we will find them in France, and we have also found them in Ireland etc This widens our boating experiences, ok it might make a few of us venture on to the Ouse, or Caledonian water ways etc, but with the great value that the Broads offers, I see these excursions being in addition to our Broads fix. So thank you forum for letting us venture outside the Broads sometimes, it adds to the overall well being of the forum and its members. Richard
  8. It could have been Timothy West he's 82 and he's on the Broads at the moment lol.
  9. Has a water skier gone splatt into his starboard bow, or is that some serious damage?
  10. I notice that you are thinking of new wall lining, quite a few of us have completly stripped the wall covering, and replaced with silvered bubble wrap, silver side in board, available in 600 mm rolls from Wickes etc This has allowed us to extend the cruising season by at least a month at each end. (Place some behind the roof lining too). Over the bubble wrap on tge walls and under tge foredeck, place a flexible van lining material. You will need a high temperature spray adhesive, lots of it, and as you are wirking in a confined space, a respirator (screwfix) that filters out organic compounds, see soray can for hazards. You will also need a large mains powered fan next to an open side window to force clean air in. I hope the moderators don't mind me putting in a link to our Viking Owners site but we have a project section, which I hope inspires you. see http://www.vikingowners.org.uk/gallery/bassm/bassm.asp?g=1 Best regards, Richard
  11. Within the black hub of the steering wheel there is a hole on the side and hidden in the hole is a jubilee clip, you need a flat bladed screw driver to engage a slotted screw and tighten. If you remove the inner ring, just pops out, you can see the jubilee clip. Might be best to remove the steering wheel but that can be a pain, if you try that, slacken the hub nut but leave the nut still engaged as if you pull it or tap it, you can sometimes hit your nose with the wheel as it comes off. yes did that on a car steering wheel... ouch.. There will be small bits of black plastic dust in there due to wear. Hope it helps, Richard
  12. When you own a boat for nearly 30 years, and do all of the upgrades yourself, you tend to notice differences in models, and then putting a date to the model. If you need any additional supporting info, please contact me. I am so pleased that my research and logic was right. In fact, earlier today, I was going through some past threads, and I was very close to asking you about how it went. Excellent. Best regards, Richard
  13. I know that Tim loves to take the opportunity of reenacting scenes from plays he has been in, I can just imagine Tim taking on Humphrey Bogart, with the scene from "The African Queen" as he hauls his boat, with a rope over his shoulder through the mud of Breydon. Peeling off the leaches, with a glance at Pru... "You know Pru, these leaches used to be the main medical cure for many illnesses, and they are making a comeback..." "Oh Tim... I didn't know that!" I wish I could write the script lol... You have to remember that both Tim and Pru are actors, and this is their main role in the programme, they have lines to learn, and basically they are still working, earning a living, and incorporating a hobby that they both enjoy. I admire them greatly. It has been said that in her younger days Pru was a stunner, take a close look at her complexion, for her age and following years of outdoor pursuits, she still is. I wish I had 30 years of boating in front of me, following early retirement on health grounds, what a great life they have had, and are still having. Best regards, Richard
  14. A lot of people criticise Tim for his antics, but to be fair, I will be first in the queue to watch it. I really enjoy the programs, especially those waterways that I can access. I guess he won't be going to Potter Heigham. Good luck to the film crew, I would love to know how many people are out of camera shot on these boats lol..
  15. Luckily we removed ours from Stalham at the end of last year, and I think we are safe on the Thames, I think he has done that alrrady, looking at all the damage to the locks and the gates lol... We could do with him on the upper Thames, this last few weeks, to run aground a few times to help with the dredging. You can be on the great river Thames on a waterway a 100 yards wide, and run aground and still be 45 yards from the bank.
  16. So do you use tweezers to handle your equipment, or maybe rubber gloves lol. Fresh wee is quite sterile it was used to clean wounds during the war.
  17. Less of a problem, I guess in the winter months, it would make a nice little hand warmer. I now feel sick thinking about that now lol...
  18. So where are the hand wash basins ?
  19. I wonder how many times he got shot at by mistake lol... When I worked in Minnesota, a bylaw was you were not allowed to shoot from a moving vehicle into the scrub at the side of the freeway. Implying... you could stop your vehicle and do it though... In the local walmart you could pick up ammunition like buying biscuits.
  20. Talking of getting my coat, it was a mink, because as he was leaving he said... I'll get my coat...... before some other begger does... Lol Plenty of wild mink around, we saw a mink terrorise and kill a young rabbit once, I didn't know rabbits squeeled that much. Not a pretty sight or sound.
  21. Chris my ipad does this sometimes, just time locked on the display, or the code won't enter. The info as Chris said fixed it. My ipad is nearly 5 years old, still on the original batteries, gets charged and discharged virtually daily. I'm sure using it one day, then a week or more later, does it no good what so ever. Maybe cycle the battery more. Re after- market charging leads, I have had no problems with the ones from £1 shop Richard
  22. Looks like model of BA is going to have a canvas top too lol... Thanks for the info on leather sewing needles, we were advised to use them for the new vinyl cockpit cushions in our boat, I will have a close look at the profile of the point. The cushions, well the bases and the foam are having a last trim before we take them home to make up. We have gone for larger thicker cushions, 95% of the time there are just the two of us on board, so comfort not utility. Coach rather than bus seating, if you know what I mean lol. Quite a bit of support joinery to do, but we are here 2 out of 3 weeks now. last night was our first of 7 on board. Best regards, Richard
  23. google " outboard drive shaft snapped" quite common really, across all brands and sizes. Most likely cause, impact of prop with a solid object, either a rock which wrecks the prop, or a length of wood that hardly leaves a mark. The stress on the gear case and gears and bearings must be horrendous. The engine will also react to this shock load too. Wise to leave well alone.
  24. Don't know the name, but the little shop by St Olaves bridge has every part for every outboard ever built. No doubt someone will give the details shortly. Note, some driveshaft lengths depend on whether the outboard is a short or long shaft. Richard
