  1. I didn't say it was impossible, I said it wasn't easy. Yes if you went out of your way to do it, no problem, but I do accept that mooring down south is less likely to be free but to average £7 a night seems excessive, or at least intentional.

I’m not saying it is not intentional, just saying everything is a compromise. We may to moor and it out less. As the toll continues to rise whilst the availability of BA moorings reduces something has to give!

Although according to another thread on here as a public sector worker I am due to retire any day now with a gold plated salary and even possibly a knighthood. So it can’t all be bad!!!

  2. I fail to understand how you can do that "easily". It means you spend an average of £7 each night !!!

Go for a week South and overnight at the Yachtstation, then a night at Oulton, then Beccles, overnight WRC then up to Norwich for the night. Then back through Breydon and stop in Horning on the opposite side of the river and for the last night Salhouse.

Although to be fair now we have moved Thunder North we are yet to get back to the Yacht Stations.

  3. Isn't it £12?
On that note, does anyone know if the basin is open again? They were doing extensive works to the moorings in May as I think the marshes are too wet in winter to get the work done (the digger would sink!).

Looking at these posts it looks like £12 without electric but perhaps £20 with electric?

Not been there this year so only going on the info posted!

  4. We are fortune to go twice a year to the Broads and it really is easy to rack up £100 of moorings over those 2 weeks.

It is of course our choice to moor at these locations but we offset it by not eating out as often as we would.

Paying £20 to moor at WRC makes it an expensive meal or indeed swim!

  5. Quite right! This year my weeks are May and July. Equivalent hire cost would have been £2500. :51_scream:
I will have spent a bit more in fuel than you, but covered a lot of miles.

We have been so often we tend not to go far these days.

Our May Half Term week would have been £1600 and our August week £1800........

  6. Happy to report we are sitting outside Pedro’s, the lady from the BBC said the boat next to us was out from Saturday, yesterday they were causing trouble so they kicked em off the boat. I do wish more yards would do this. One large one in particular......

No idea if it’s connected but it’s still news of one boatload of lowlifes not disturbing everyone else.

A since deleted post (I think) on Facebook had a picture of said offending boat- a bathtub in a lovely blue and white colour......

  7. Other than Potter I have squeezed an Aquafibre Diamond 43 under every bridge. I never understand why Beccles is listed as a problem- low tide can be 9 foot plus?

  8. I can certainly concur that the North is very busy this week- even cotishall was full Sunday evening.

We managed to squeeze into Neatishead at lunchtime and have stayed for the evening with a stream of boats coming along only to have to turn!

  9. Thanks Jean. I am keeping a sort of log of how much I would have spent on hiring, set against the capital and ongoing costs of having Goosander. After the fees are deducted, I will have saved £2,525 up until the end of this year  - or to put it another way, that money would offset the initial £5,000 outlay. I have not included any winter weeks in the calculation as I probably would not have hired at that time. So it's an honest calculation and as you can see, within the next two years, I should have made back the value of the investment and still own it to sell on later.

Awesome numbers. I gave up calculating my syndicate savings when they hit £10k as I doubt anybody was believing me anymore!

  10. When it causes real damage.
Today, though, we have the grp factor, it's incredibly easy to cause superficial damage, e.g. scruff the gel coat thus niggle the indignant owner. Wooden boat, easy, a slap of filler and a dash of paint, job done, no one is too bothered. Gel coat is not maintenance free, at least not on the Broads. Wear and tear is a part of boating, indeed it is a fact of life, these things happen, I suspect that most of us accept that. However, the unwelcome hit, down to a lack of care, that causes real damage is not acceptable.

We were once on Thunder when we were clobbered be an Alpha Craft that never stopped. Fortunately we had witness details. We were pushed up onto the concrete mooring, bursting a fender and scraping the gel coat and vents where we hit the wall.

Phoned Alphacraft who told us to call in which we did. They laughed and said “is that it?”

Brooms repaired it and charged Alpha Craft over £500 plus VAT for that “minor work”.

  11. I would have thought that with an annual toll date the rangers don’t need to check for tolls all year round- they must know the boats on their patch and once they know they have been rolled they don’t need to check again until next April.
