I think you may be partially right. If you look at the Tithe map ( 1840 ) , maybe there were actually two staithes

I'm guessing that due to lack of dredging by Ye Olde Broade Authoritye back in the 1800s that corner of the Mere has silted up and the old staithe become disused. Just as well we have a more forward thinking Authority now!!!  :default_laugh::facepalm:
