August With Teens

Hi there

We are very excited to be taking our first boating holiday on the broads on 7 August for 7 days with our two boys aged 16 and 13! Thought this was probably a safer option than most hols. We are hiring a glow light 3 from Potter Heigham. Couple of questions if anyone is able to help please?

Is it possible / good choice to go to Accle (get Bus to Great Yarmouth) for a day and then go back up the river to Wroxham and possibly coltishall over the course of 7 days? Any suggested itineraries?

I expect this is a moving feast, but are pubs/ restaurants generally open now for outdoor- to takeaway if busy?

is it worth hiring a rowing boat for the boys? I have fishing licenses sorted but am clueless tbh about fishing. Is it better to hire basic kit for them when we get to potter Heigham and any ideas where from ?

You can purchase fairly inexpensive fishing gear from the fishing shop in Stalham or from Anglers direct in Hoveton.

 

Glow of light is a very roomy, stable former Connoisseur boat , getting a bit old but they are still an excellent choice, just remember that when you turn ,the stern has a hell of a sweep as they are a big heavy boat.

 I would agree with mooring up at Acle and catching the bus to Great Yarmouth , or alternatively drive there when you drop your boat off at the end of your week.

Most of the riverside inns are now open and serving meals (whilst obeying the covid-19 precautions), some may still be take away food though .

A rowing boat certainly will add to the teenagers “fun” but will also add to your frustration whilst towing it , but hundreds do and love having them especially when pub moorings are full ; perhaps considering a small sailing dingy would also be a good option and potentially great fun for all .

As far as an itinerary is conserved , decide where you fancy in the morning and head there , you’re on holiday just relax and “go with the flow “

Youngsters need to catch otherwise they generally lose interest fast so best do it right. I'd fish from the bank if I were you, this is how:

Whilst the bus service from Acle is getting back to its pre virus frequency (First X1/X11) it is quite a hike from Acle Bridge, there is only one bus stop in the village centre (It is an express route from Norwich to Yarmouth via Acle) There is a footpath (unlit) parallel with the road. There is a bus stop by the bridge but suspect its very infrequent & I cant find a timetable

if you are starting at potter heigham, lathams have a fishing tackle shop just across the road from their main shop.

Dinghy every time for me. Makes for fun exploring all those bits you can't get to by cruiser and provides evening activity for those who get bored sitting about.
