Nor could I, the pictures I took on my phone were rubbish - so I have to admit a small cheat ... 

It was my son that took the pictures, he is a keen photographer, especially in motorsports.

He used a Canon 5D Mark 3 with a 70-200mm lens

It was a super blue moon.Next one 2037.Next blue moon in three years time.

to fill the screen with the moon, you need something like a 1000mm lens, then somehow you need to hold it steady.

That was difficult using a phone camera on a boat that wouldn't stay still last night.
