Pub Walks

With the silly season upon us it meant we chose to do things a little different last week for a couple of our pub visits, but they would also suit those who prefer a bit of a stroll to the pub.

White Horse Inn Upton

As expected the normal few moorings down Upton dyke were taken, however if you head back to The Bure and head upriver past the mouth of the Thurne after about half a mile you will come to a bend in the river with a pumping station on the left hand bank and decent hard piling suitable for wild mooring, with space for probably about 12 boats. We moored there and just by the pumping station you will find a hard gravel path, eventually becomes concrete which will lead you back to the village of Upton. Took us about 45mins each way. Torch essential for the journey back in the dark.

White Horse Neatishead

We didn't even bother to explore the normal moorings at Neatishead or Gayes Staithe, but instead moored at Barton Turf staithe. I have also moored at Paddy's Lane Barton and used the board walk to get back to Barton Turf. Head away from the water until you reach a country lane and turn left. Follow this road to the end and then turn left and The White Horse is just on the right. As you leave Barton and until you reach Neatishead the road goes to national speed limit, so you need to use the normal precautions for walking in the country. Face traffic and hi viz bands and torch for the journey back if its dark. Took us about 35mins each way.

Other suggestions

The Fur and Feathers Woodbastwick.

We moored opposite The Ferry Horning and took the lane away from the staithe to the village and eventually the pub. This can also be done from Cockshoot Dyke. Care needs to be taken down the first part of the lane leading away from the staithe if the water is high as it can flood there. Took us about 35 mins each way.

For those not able to pass Potter Bridge

The Crown Catfield

Moor at Sutton and cross the A149 into Sutton. At the duck pond turn right and follow the road running parallel to the A149 until it joins the A149 again. At this point cross over and follow the road into Catfield until you come to The Crown. Approx 45 mins each way.

The Pleasureboat and Greyhound Hickling.

Again moor at Sutton and cross the A149 into Sutton. At the duck pond turn right and follow the road until you see a sign for Hickling. Follow the road until you reach Hickling. You will come upon The Pleasureboat first. The Greyhound is another 15mins on. Took us a shade over the hour to reach The Pleasureboat.

Still there Iain. We moored at Sutton and decided on a BBQ. Walked from there past The Harnser to Stalham. Purchased some meat from the butchers in Stalham and then a quick visit to Tesco's. Took a walk to the bus stop and the No.6 was about 45mins away, so the choice was the walk back or a quick one in The Swan Inn whilst waiting for the No.6. You can probably guess which we chose.

For steam train fans it's worth remembering that it's only 45 mins from Wroxham to Sherringham. A trip we made last weekend as it was the annual Poppy Line beer festival. We did our best to try and support it. :wasted:

Alex,

We moored at St Benet's for the 3RR one year. Cycled to Horning for the start, then retired to The Ferry to watch them pass by. Then cycled back to Ludham bridge for some more action before cycling on to Potter for the bridge action. Then we cycled back to St Benet's for a well earned BBQ. Have yet to do the walk to The Kings Arms though.

A look at the OS map also suggests The Crown should be possible from How Hill.

  • 2 weeks later...

Another for the list this time South. Having got a nice mooring at Bramerton, my mind turned to thoughts of a pint. The obvious choice was The Waters Edge, a very nice restaurant that I have been to many times, but I wasn't really after a restaurant. Out with the trusty OS map and it looked like a reasonable walk along the river to The Surlingham Ferry. Another very nice pub, but just really don't like the moorings there, so it seemed like a reasonable compromise. Moor at Bramerton, drink at Surlingham Ferry.

As it turned out it is a very nice walk from Bramerton to The Surlingham Ferry, You walk across the common till you get to the first of the riverside properties and then you'll see a gate leading to a permissive path. The first part of the path is permissive across various people's property. Please respect this and close all gates etc. Eventually you get to a church in Surlingham and have a choice of a slightly more direct route to the pub, or a route that follows the river.

My only advice is that sometimes two pints of Little Sharpie is better than three!!!  Especially when high water is at 4pm. Parts of the riverside path are very close to the water and likely to be submerged at high water. Luckily the deck shoes will dry, and next time I will be suitably prepared and there may be a fourth!!! cheers

Hi, Keith,

We have walked this one, but if you take the first left after turning right at the duck pond, you get to the Greyhound first! You pays yer money and takes yer choice!!

Another one from the South - moor at Burgh castle, follow the track up from the drainage pump, at the end go straight on (not to the right). Walk through the residential area until you reach the end of the road. Turn left and you come to the Kings Head.

Alternatively, go through the footpath round the back of Goodchilds, up the lane to the main road, now you can turn right for the Kings Head at Belton, or left for the Queens Head at Burgh Castle.

I haven't been to either of these establishments recently, so can't vouch for what you'll find!

We also walked from Potter along the river to Martham Boats, and thence to the Kings Arms at Martham. Bit of a longer trek, that one!
