I was fortunate enough to go through the bridge on my first ever trip to the Broads. Charlie Crowe was the Hoseasons Pilot then, and my hire boat was Sun Glory from Porter & Haylett. It was a windy day, always is up at Potter Heigham anyway Sun Glory was 6ft 6" air draft on the sign at the helm.
Having missed the pilot mooring, numpty, thats me, should have turned the boat round to moor up, the wind had pushed me passed the pick up point, he had one on the wooden houses down on the port side before Herbert Woods.
Anyway old Charlie took us through with about half an inch to spare....so he said, and told us what time to be back the next day. I am telling all of you this, for those who have NEVER been above the bridge. IF your boat cannot get through that hole, HIRE a day boat and go and enjoy the beauty that is Hickling Broad etc.
I have been through many times in the 70/80/90s but only once since the Millenium.
