  1. Welcome to the forum I'm sure you will enjoy it, loads of good advice and information and lots of really nice people.
  2. I will tell you what I will do for you tomorrow I'll spend a bit of time do some research on better quality PMR radios, I do know amateur radio operators that are very technically minded and are brilliant with electronics, and one or two of them have some very nice quality handsets which the can adapt to work on certain bands let me have a chat with one or two of them, they might Be able to make you a nice custom handset for PMR 446. The great thing if you do this way as you can install I proper antenna as you will have the capability to use aPL 259 with an adapter this means even on your half at watt you would be putting out a very good signal and you receive would be greatly improved as well, I will let you know how I get on all the best...
  3. The joys of living in Great Britain Jenny Morgan we all love it, I don't think don't like it blazingly hot I cant stand the rain it makes you wet...
  4. Ian the answer to your question is yes they are, and they have had a fresh lick of paint very posh. However I well tell you a funny story the last time I had the need to use that send facilities I was going about my business then at the crucial moment as I wanted to leave the WC wanted to come with me most embarrassing, I need a sharp exit...
  5. Robin I hope you don't think I was having a go at you because I certainly wasn't. I simply saw your video and as I said earlier I said to myself when I see Robin I must tell him that that radio is not a legal PMR. However as a licensed radio operator I do not have the luxury to be able to say oh today I'll push Out 500 watts but I'll only do it for a minute I have worked very hard to get my license and I would not like it to be taken from me, I am not licensed to use 500 W so therefore I don't do it. The other point I wanted to make a gentleman on here did mention earlier you can buy very good PMR radios from companies like ICOM but we will cost a considerable amount of money and I personally think for just two way communication on the river the cheap ones are just as good. Anyway I shall end here I think I have said enough about radio and licensing all the best in the meantime...
  6. Yes Jonathan I don't smile myself when you pointed that out transmitting on warts that's definitely a new one. This software is fairly new and I of course I'm Scottish so that times it struggles with my Glaswegian accident. However it does have the ability to learn but you have to correct it so I think I need to proof read a little bit more. Certainly it is a fantastic piece of software and if you are registered blind person like myself it really does make life so much easier, are you still use a program called JAWS for Windows which is basically a screen reader but he just won't shut up and really gets on your nerves and of course £500, but this new program is fantastic the only speaks when you wanted to speak and reads what you wanted to read so I'm very pleased with it and thank you very much for pointing this out to me...
  7. Okay guys a few points about these cheap PMR radios and they are cheap I believe they start around £20 and the most expensive ones for a set of two is around £70. Because of this they are obviously not the best build quality they are plastic Mass produced and very poorly filterd making them very susceptible to spurious noise whether that be air born or electrical, as PMR radio is out there for anyone to use no license requirement you are limited to very low transmit power I believe 500 mW as these radios fall under the same category as citizens band yes CB. The one thing I will point out Robin is the radio I saw you with is not a legal PMR radio that radio should only be sold two people who hold an amateur radio license , the reason for this is that radio can transmit about five or six warts which it Is far more than 500 mW which are legally entitled to use on PMR. That radio is UHF and VHF which means you could accidentally transmit on bands that you're not licensed to use, when I watched your video where you showed your new radio I did mean to tell you but I haven't really seen you since. As someone who studied very hard to get my amateur radio licence I don't feel it is correct that anyone can walk in of the street and buy a radio that you clearly have to be licensed to use. So to end PMR it's perfectly fine for two way communication on the Norfolk Broads but if you are buying one of these radios make sure you are buying a PMR only ,you will then have the confidence that you're staying within the restrictions of the laws set out for using PMR two way communication thank you I hope this helps and it wasn't too boring...
  8. Well Robin I can probably tell you your problem PMR radios using 446 MHz I'm very close to amateur frequencies and you will find under certain conditions you will pick up spurious noise. This normally occurs under certain conditions if you have a barometer on-board and you happen to look and you see there is a high-pressure this can cause all sorts of strange things to happen. Amateur radio operators actually work forward the high-pressure as you can sometimes make contacts that you would never make under normal conditions for instance if you think the range of my radio en UGF and VHF it's probably around 20 miles but when you get these high pressures you can suddenly be Setting and Norwich and you could be speaking to someone in Glasgow all London en Manchester all the Scottish islands and possibly even all over Europe no this does not harm very often but when it does is very enjoyable. However the bad side to this is that it does make the bands very noisy as you get a lot of what we call spred which is simply someone to be using Channel 20 but they can be here on channel 40 60 and even easy so that's one possible reason Forget interference. Of course the other possibility is the radio you're using is not very well filter how can I explain if you imagine a gate that has been left open everything gets through but if you have a radio with good filtering then the gate is always closed. Hope this helps you. Sorry in my last post it's no all correct one or two words have gone wrong, I am using I'm new piece of software for the blind and it is still learning my Scottish accent but please bare with me we will get there in the end as the more you use the program the more it understands and automatically connects all the words I don't see properly it's quite amusing.
  9. Hi there new software looks good, I have not had any problems as yet. I will admit that took me about two minutes to find the content list but hey Ho it's all good fun,I like to keep the old Brain ticking over.
  10. Hi Bob welcome to the forum, I can't really say much more I agree with all the information you been given I would certainly take it further because it's just not on. Having been hit myself I do know how you feel, so yes report them.
  11. Spot-on that is exactly what you need to do, in these large updates which really windows 10 is no more than an update not unlike a service pack so any small glitches usually are the installation of that piece software Will normally do the trick...
  12. I have been reading the comments on this thread, Windows 10 has a new games package this can be found and tablet mode. However I don't know about the old package I would assume they wouldn't watch but as I say I don't know gaming is not my thing. Someone mentioned Norton there is no reason why Norton should not work on Windows 10 I would think if you're having difficulties uninstall Norton and then reinstall you'll find this will solve your problem. When doing large updates like putting on our service pack or upgrading from say Windows 8 to Windows 8.1 it is always a good idea to make sure nothing is running on your PC and Tom of all antivirus software I Reinstate them when the update is fully completed. I think the other problem was something called free cell I don't really know what that is , I think it Could possibly be a card game but I'm not really sure if it is a thurd party piece of software once again uninstall it then reinstall. Obviously there are going to be some small glitches but give it a chance people it is new and the me need to iron out some issues. I have installed Windows 10 on my new PC I may have left it for a while but I could not as it was a new computer once I finished installing Windows 8.1 the computer started to update and was forcing me to take Windows 10 as my update, have not had much of a chance to play with it but everything seems to be working I had one messing driver which I went to their website found the appropriate driver and install it know everything and the device manager looks hunky-dory. If anyone else has issues with Windows 10 write them up and I'll have a look around and see what I can find out for you, but with every day software there really should be no issues, just remember what I said earlier make sure you have nothing running in the background I'm come of your anti-virus before doing the download and the installation and please remember that Microsoft servers are jampacked at the moment with people trying to do exactly the same thing as you anyway I hope this has helped some of you all the best...
  13. Approximately 25 years ago we were crossing Breydon water I can't remember exactly the closing time but there was around 230 in the morning, we had stop a great Yarmouth yacht station to drop our mast and get ready to cross. On board was myself my friend Keffer and my first guide dog whose name was Ulan he was a fool bred a black Labrador and a fantastic dog. We set off at the correct time got some way across Breydon when we realised we have drifted slightly two port and of course were on the wrong side of the posts, so we bottomed out the boat and broke a sheer pen in the engine, so we sort ourselves out I managed to haul the engine up fitted I knew sheer pin dropped the engine back in place which is not an easy job because it was an inboard outboard tape of set up. So we started the engine up no problems there tried to get ourselves out I'm broke another sheer pin this went on and on until we were both absolutely exhausted and I do mean exhausted it was getting on 4 o'clock in the morning and it was pitch black you could not see your hand in front of your face so we decided to tie up onto the nearest post and wait until light. 6 AM we get up plenty of light we haul the engine we replace the Sheer pin, got all tools are away had a tidy up then set off two wards the berny arms as my poor guide dog Ulan was desperate for the toilet. So there you go there is my little story about getting caught out on breydon hope you all enjoy it ...
  14. Hi there guys been on the boat overnight so just catching up with the comments, I see one or two people struggling with the installation over Windows 10. One thing to remember Microsoft's servers Will be jampacked with people trying to download windows 10 I myself had difficulty at first so I waited till 3 AM started the download then went to bed got up at 5:30 AM download was complete then started installation and had no problems at all, of course I'm not suggesting that everyone does the same as me but I was having difficulty through the day hope this helps...
  15. Hello there Ian that particular feature could be switched off and you would never of had that problem again, that was the first thing I used to switch off when I installed a copy of Vista on anyone's machine, and you are correct it was a pain in the posterior.
  16. Grendel that is refreshing to hear, I thought I was the only person that like Vista any time I used to say two people all I'm using Vista they all used to tell me how bad it was but I have to say are you used it for a long time on more than one machine and had no problems with it ever. So great stuff I'm really glad I'm not the only person that enjoyed Vista...
  17. Hello everyone , as some people may know on here I am a bit of a computer geek which is quite funny as the other week I struggled to in bed a video on this site ha ha. I suppose I am fairly new to computers as I only got my first PC in 2005 but since then I have caught the bug been building PCs repairing them installing operating systems and learning about various pieces of software. Over over this time I have mainly been in Microsoft man started with XP professional then moved on to Vista yes and I listened to All these people seeing Vista was rubbish which in fact was not true the problem with Vista was you needed I feel the substantial machine to run bake processor lots of RAM and plenty of hard drive space. I then managed to get ahold of an operating system called Windows Longhorn and installed it on my machine one that I had built my self Windows Longthorne was about like all the good parts of a XP and all the good parts of Vista brought together and really was are very good operating system although it was never released. I then applied to become a Microsoft taster I was offered a copy of Windows 7 to beta test terms of a happy man installed on my machine and I have to say but I was thoroughly impressed , I must say even today I am still very impressed with Windows 7 and think it's been one of Microsoft and Baker offerings. Then before you know what Windows 7 had only been with us about 18 months when Microsoft announce Windows 8 what a lot of people don't know is Windows 7 Windows 8 were both being developed at the same time and Windows 8 was always about to come it was really a little bit naughty of Microsoft because a full copy of windows seven ultimate was around £160 many people of course pay less then after 18 months hello we have a new operating system Windows 8 so yes a little bit naughty. I have course I just bought a new machine yes you herd me bought a new machine, it's a long story but I have moved house and the computer I had built was huge and I needed to downsize so I bought a very nice Lenovo 27 inch touchscreen what an ice seven processor fourth generation 12 GB of RAM and a solid state hard drive very nice machine keep with Windows 7 and the opportunity to upgrade to Windows 8 so I did, I cant really say if i was that impressed to begin with but the touch screen experience I have to say was amazing being it was a ten point capacitive touchscreen , but as time went by I started to enjoy Windows 8 then suddenly we're getting 8.1 so I upgraded to 8.1 not much had changed really they had reintroduced the start menu that was all rubbish in my opinion but still I enjoyed the experience. So now we're getting Windows 10 and I have started doing the upgrade today but I haven't quite finished yet as three years have passed since I bought my last computer I feel that was time for a new one, personally I think three years with one computer is long enough I feel relieved to move on what's the times. Sort my new computer is the new 27 inch Apple iMac 5k retinal display with a fourth generation Intel processor 32 gig around and for getting up graphics and to top of all off it has a dual boot from OS X 10.10 to Windows 10, so it's all new for me never had are Mac before so I am really enjoying Learning this new operating system but that is so much different to Windows but I am getting there slow but sure. When I have finally finished installing Windows 10 and I get my head around I'll let you guys know what I think but if it's anything like the changes we have had recently I'm sure it will be very good. So I'm going to end here that's been my little rant about PCs I hope it doesn't bore too many people I find it all very interesting and long may technology keep moving forward to keep my old mind working.
