Not sure that that weed cutter is going to be the type to cut that weed. In the 60's they had to clear the weed from the channels on an almost constant basis, then as if by magic, the weed suddenly disappeared. It was almost like a blanket type weed but the existing weed cutter is designed to cut that strand like stuff you see on the way to Coltishall and West Somerton - not sure if it will cope well with that "banket " type weed. Don't aske me to name either sort please!!

Worryingly weed is becoming more of a problem in different areas too - and it seems to be different weed that, which just clogs up your prop and builds up in a mat in front of your keel. Wroxham used to be relatively clear but this stuff, or similar, now seems to be established in certain areas around the fringes. Horning had to stop using Black Horse for sailing at the back end of last year because of the situation and also Barton was seeing issues in certain areas.

I think its a real concern if it continues to spread. Causes - nutrient rich run off from farm land certainly doesn't help and "grey" water from people showering will also be a contributory factor. Unless it suddenly dies back, it is going to be a problem but I wonder why some Broads are affected and others are not?

Any answers on a postcard to Yare House please!!

Is that why Blackhorse Broad is still shut.

  2. Had a nice sail up to  Hickling yesterday but I was disappointed to see so much weed. You cannot even go up to the posts as the weed extends about 2 ft in to the channel. Even Heigham sound is suffering with the weed starting about 3 ft from the bank. Going to be very interesting for the 3RR

  3. A friend of mine who lives in the village moored a boat a couple of weeks ago and was asked for his Name. They replied that it was not the name of the registered owner to which he replied does that matter. He didn’t pay.

  4. Stopped here today and spoke to the ranger. It’s £5 until 17-00 and £10 overnight. If you have paid for the day it’s only £5 for overnight. You can moor at 10-01 and leave at 10-00 the following day and it’s only £10. New signs have been erected to state that penalty charge will apply if you don’t buy a ticket and I was told they have already issued some penalties notices.

Just  lovely for all to see and it makes us so happy that these beautiful boats are so well cared for.

    Kindest Regards Marge and Parge

I have varnished Nipper many times but this is the first boat I have painted and it’s a lot bigger than Nipper. :default_biggrin:

  6. For the last 3 weeks I have been putting in 12-14 hour days to get Papaver back to looking her best.  We launched today in very windy conditions, very pleased with her new colour scheme.

Many thanks to Robin Day, Dave and Ali and Charlie Griffin for all the help and advice and cups of tea and cake..

    Update on Nipper,

Having spent many hours at the boat yard in recent weeks with Nipper building up those coats she is coming on nicely . I'm looking forward to having her back in the water early June all being well and have accepted an invitation to attend The Beccles Wooden Broads Cruiser Show in August with her.

I can see there is going to be some stiff competition at Beccles this year.

She looks fantastic Jez. Well done.

Oooh Look - Papaver with only a partial compliment of port side fenders on deck - Have a word !

    (She does look good though)

    Griff

The deck crew was feeling a bit under the weather so was a bit slow getting the fenders back up.

Here is my latest contribution to the world of YouTube boat reviews. If I seem a bit harassed during it, that is because I was desperately trying to keep my son out of shot (for privacy reasons) although, to be fair, he quite rightly was reminding me of things I had missed!

(At the time of posting, YouTube was still processing the video for HD in case that makes a difference for you).

We hired Sapphire 3 a few years back and that was a 6 berth on the same hull.  We found the beds two small for two adults so had a cabin each.

The boat is showing its age with the colour scheme but it looked very clean and serves a place in the current market.

Phone for me for now… need to look into the VHF & course side of things… keep meaning to but never have as of yet - never even paid much attention to my phone signal while out and about… don’t want to get caught short 🤣

I didn’t think you could phone them anymore. Contact is by VHF I believe.

  11. From the above if the bilge pump draws from the engine catch tray or sealed area it needs a filter if it takes water from elsewhere it does not. If it’s the former the owner should be encouraged to remove it and no record noted.

Full at Potter and lots of boats at Womack dyke and Thurne. The new restaurant in the granary must be fuming.

Couldn't agree more about Gus. The guys are OBYS are fantastic, really helpful to us especially in winter.

The Reedham ones vary. We got a real jobsworth a couple of years ago. Couldn't do anything right in his eyes. Generally though, if they can see you know what you're doing (ish) they tend to leave you alone or wander by for a chat. No problem with that.

A well know member on here with more year’s experience than I care to remember was ask at Ranworth by the Ranger last year if he was a first timer as he could hear the engine revving. The fact he didn’t touch the throttle and was being pulled in on the ropes was laughable.
