  1. If my informant is right then Collin had simply had enough. Whether that was of the pub itself or the actual owner you'll have to guess.
  2. That tallies with something that I had heard when it was announced that Grain was taking on the Locks. I can see Grain handing back the keys and walking away and I wouldn't blame them. Sterilizing the Locks was not very bright.
  3. You and I do, as tax payers who directly finance the Coastguard. Unless things have changed since I was an auxiliary Coastguard then you are absolutely right. The action that a Coastguard might take could include delegating decision making to a suitable, on site, alternative.
  4. Paul& Margaret won't go far wrong with my advice, it wasn't totally tongue in cheek! The bit about marshes is sound, especially in the autumn. Marsh verges are good for sloes, ideal with gin! Some excellent mushrooms to be had too. As for those big, juicy worms, great for perch!
  5. A good marsh lobworm takes some beating so rather than bringing worms to the Broads I'd bring a spade! Corn, bread and maggots, both left and right squirmers, are all easy baits and all deliver. Two reds on an eighteen should do the job!
  6. A common form of propulsion for geriatric Freemen!
  7. If I believe the comments about Water's Edge's attitudes to visiting boaters then it is hardly surprising that it is for sale, in my jaded opinion of course!
  8. Would consider it, at slack water, depending on water temperature. In all probability I would sidle up to those nice people in the nearby boatyard and ask for help. Firstly turning the shaft by hand from inside the boat would hopefully work though!
  9. A must have guide to Broads boating! https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/The-Art-of-Coarse-Sailing-Green-Michael-1962-May-Second-Impression/123927142462?hash=item1cdaa2203e:g:zNMAAOSwYu9dlcuw
  10. Have looked in all the obvious places to see if the place is for sale, nothing to suggest that it is. Looked at their website, they close at 7.00 in the evening! When Collin was there it sometimes closed at 7.00 in the morning (Lock-in)! Granted that they have Covid to cope with but closing at 7.00 is admitting defeat. The Geldeston Wherry must see the Locks curtailed hours as Christmas coming early. 7.00 closing, wow, sad.
  11. No, but it wouldn't surprise me in the least. In truth I have yet to read or hear a good review. Seemingly another good pub spoilt.
  12. In my days, being school kids, non of us shaved! Instead we used 'bell wire', two ends of it which were twisted together as an effective tuner.
  13. Some years ago I was sailing across Breydon with the intention of hitting the change at the Yacht Station. The mudflats were still covered as we set off. Coming the other way was a convoy of cruisers, suddenly the lead cruiser veered left, heading for the South shore and the rest blindly followed and continued following as one by one they all ran aground. Clearly they thought that we had got it wrong, despite the fact that we were sailing rather than aground, the tail enders were waving frantically to us, enthusiastically indicating that we should follow them. We always have binoculars handy when we cross Breydon, so much to see, this time it looked like a large school group. School teachers aren't idiots, are they? Presumably they thought that they were turning into the Waveney. Even intelligent people can get it wrong
  14. That children were involved was cause enough for an airlift. That they grounded at what appears to have been pretty near the top of the side suggests that for the tide to go right down and then back up again would have been many hours later. A lot to ask of both children and dogs. Okay for us adults, time to read a book and swallow a few bevvies, easy!

  16. Plus Peter Brough and Archie Andrews, a ventriloquist . . . . . . . on a crystal set! Did his mouth move? We shall never know!
  17. I note that it includes bathing wear!
  18. Guilty as charged! Done it for myself and done it for others, I must be a real idiot!
  19. Perhaps as to what a 'wireless' is should be explained to our younger members!
  20. Prop related incidents: https://www.edp24.co.uk/news/warning-over-boat-propellers-water-safety-norfolk-broads-coast-1-6802060
  21. Tin opener, bed socks and wooly hats. The boats are well equipped but tin openers are often worn out come the late season. With cold nights warm feet and warm heads are good.
  22. MM. there appears to be little doubt that there is an increase in prop related incidents. I can only guess the reasons but statistics are statistics. Personally I'm not in favour of prop guards but I am in favour of more effective education and bankside information. On BBC East this morning there was mention of a crew being airlifted off their grounded cruiser on Breydon, injury free I think.
