  1. Having been woken at 4am due to a less than one second power cut. I can report the dreich continues on the North Coast this morning. These one second power cuts are a pest when they happen, never last for more than a moment as we are on the same supply as Bacton Gas Terminal which now utilises electric pumps.
  2. We are on the NE corner. If I look east there is sea, if I look north there is sea. We are 40 metres above sea level and just under a mile inland. And we have the mother and father of a "Haar" rolling in, not good if on passage anywhere twix Yarmouth ans Wells. It is a bad corner in this weather because if you stay in too close there are lines of pots everywhere and further out you risk an inshore tanker keeping landside of Sheringham Shoal. And it is getting thicker!
  3. You must feel you are in a hanger compared with a Prelude. Many years ago when our two boys were very young we moved from our self built Seawych to a Centaur. We used to get lost in it.
  4. One must remember that modern France (and that the French are very proud of their history) was born of direct action. Direct action that makes our years of Cromwell and civil war look like a bit of a picnic in he park. I was in France in 68, and yes revolution is in their very being.
  5. Do they still use "Le Pont" ? If a national holiday fell say on a Sunday you did not get Monday off in lieu, instead if a holiday fell on a Thursday you did'nt do Friday or if a Tuesday you don't bother with Monday.
  6. Nothing like the melody of a bu*%ered BMC or a kn×ckered Nanni drifting across Oulton as dawn breaks. Though a vibrating Vetus or bucking Bukh can also be pleasant.
  7. Robin, I suspect that you have not used the West system retrospectively. It is a bit of an "art" when using newly worked wood, application to used wood that has been open to any number of contaminants both natural and chemical is fraught with problems.
  8. And not a DPF in sight. Diesel particles are highly carcinogenic. So yes get your gas mask on.
  9. How do they get there? How do they haul their clobber. ( as an ex fly fisherman I cannot understand the gear. I had rod, reel, fly box, folding net and could carry it easily on my bike) There is no legal access except by water. You could do endless things with it if the punters could just drive up to the front door. A helipad and microlight landing strip might work but it would be a lesser minority than boaters.
  10. The figures just don't stack up. For over half the year you will not be getting any revenue. If you are on borrowed money you are dead. If you have the capital, why bother, running a good pub is bloody hard work. If you want to go ahead then find one with half a chance of making a decent return. I am with LeoMagill on this one.
  11. I have lost count of how many time I say to myself " how did I end up living in one of the bunch"
  12. Weybridge, Peter. On the river Wey. However you are very nearly correct but my river ran into the north bank of the Thames not the south. I lived 700 ft above the original source of the river Wye. But it only flows there now after exceptional rainfall, source is now quoted as West Wycombe.
  13. It all delibrat, u, c, weez like it as it iz. If weez make enuf of it no wonz will come. Gud, weez no wont grockles leev uz lone. Ands orf Norfolk. This is ome only fofr MBAs like me iz, buugger orf res yuz.
  14. Well they seem to spend so much time in court and money on lawyers send it back as not fit for purpose and buy a Nelson or an inboard large Orkney.
  15. Was it an "off the shelf" workboat or a one off
  16. In the last forty years countless industries have shaken out and unit numbers contracted. Shipyards, coal, machine tools, cars, garages, retail clothing, electronics, motorcycles, food retailing etc, etc ,etc. And pubs are no different. Everyone had a pint at lunchtime forty years ago now a No No. They absorb too much money to use on a regular basis for the average family. Good ones will survive, they rest are not viable. As an industry with changing attitutes to drinking there were thousands too many.
  17. The trouble with the place is Nov. Dec. Jan. Feb. And Mar. To be honest many years April as well. Many years with our infamous NEers there is no warm weather in exposed Norfolk until May. Who will venture out on the marshes in mid winter? Other out of the way pubs like Tan Hill have roads and the Pennine Way to help out but everything is against the Berney. What it needs is a very wealthy, balmy fellow who fancies his own pub. Maybe a relusive aged ex rock star who does not care if it turns a profit or not, can ride out the winters and be a Bon Vivant in high summer.
  18. With change of useage to a house the price is about right considering the amount of work needed. If you have to run it as a pub £80K top wack. It would need to be cash. If anyone is idiot enough to loan on the place the borrower would be dead before they pulled the first pint.
  19. Please read "Isles of the West" by Ian Mitchell. A most enlightening insight into the RSPB. It is available from Amazon as book or Kindle. A fair bit of sailing as well as the author travels the Isles in his Corribee. It was recommended by a correspondent on the other site who has interests in two sporting estates. It is an eye opener by a respected journalist.
  20. With respect Grace I think getting a mooring mid August is a problem over the whole of the Northern rivers. If you have to visit during the school holiday period you must be prepared to start looking just after lunch if you are to secure a place on a free 24 hour mooring. Not really gauge of attractiveness. ( Malthouse accepted)
  21. I unwittingly say warp if it has a lid and painter if it is open. I think most dinghy sailors and those now too old still do.
  22. I think it's primary use is as a tender. With super yachts getting so much bigger and having to lie further off especially in the newer fashionable spots in the Adriatic a rib gives a greater degree of safety in the short steep seas that a katabatic will kick up. Close to mountains the Med can go from flat calm to very dangerous in a few minutes. As I know only too well.
