  3. I dont know how it happened but I somehow won the quiz last night. This means I have the dubious honour of being QM next Friday. Here are the topics for next week Geography Connections History Mottos First Lines of Books (Not as easy as it appears as wont be in English) General Rubbish All my questions are made up by myself so if you have a book of quiz questions it will be no help. Hope to see you all there around 8.30 on Friday https://www.nbnplus.co.uk/chat/ Enter user name (Leave password blank)

  8. You May be getting a security warning when logging into the chat. This is due to the certificate having expired and with all the other issues i have i failed to renew it. Please be assured that the site is safe and I will renew the certificate within the next day or two. Arthur
  9. Sorry to miss the quiz again but a lot has changed. The good news is I am no longer in hospital and have been allowed home. A number of restrictions limit what I can do and I certainly wont be sailing any more. It i also likely that I will no longer be able to visit the Broads Gradually gettiing less stiff walking after lying in bed for nearly a month. Have to attend for Dyalisis three times a week 4 four hours and I have a real pile of pills to take each day. I have to look on the positive side though. If an ambulance had not been called to take me into hospital promptly I would not be here to notice the inconveniences. We sometimes dont notice how much we owe to the NHS but I am very grateful to them. Will hopefully get to the quiz next Friday
  10. sorry i missed the quiz. not easy from a hospital bed when you are on a dyalisis machine. pluus other procedures. will hope to.l be there next week.
  11. I have Ended up in hospital But here and trying to enjoy the forurm
  12. Well! it looks like I managed to pick it up. More like a bad cold at the moment . No more feinting but had a bad bout of sickness Tuesday evening. Apart from general tiredness and aching somewhat the only other symptons I have not being able to taste things properly, Was not sure on Wednesday when I cooked fish and chips and everything tasted very bland. Last night I decided to put it to the test and made a curry. A mild one for mother and a reasonably hot and spicy one fo mysellf. Could hardly taste it. Still eating normally though so that is a help. As I very rarely leave the house I guess this thing is in the air anyway now and no amount of lockdowns and masks is going to make a lot of difference.
  13. I am in the position now of waiting to find out. The home situation I have where I can never go out You would think would keep one safe from things. Might not be covid of course as I have had all three injections. However this Saturday morning I walked over to the local corner shop for a loaf of bread. Only that short distance but I was using my stick. All was ok and just as I was paying I suddenly felt sick and the next thing I feinted without warning. Rather frightening at the time but customers in the shop helped me although I did have to force them not to call an ambulance. I have to be available at home for someone who cant cope alone. Managed to walk back home, Did a blood pressure check around an hour later which was very high but did reduce somewhat throughout the day. Could not face food on Saturday and have been left with a sore throat and laryngtis. Felt better on Sunday and managed to cook a roast as usual but the other symptoms still persist combined with being very tired and muscles aching. Might be something else but am concerned the virus may be involved. Will know soon but if it is goodness knows where I could have picked it up.
  14. Sorry for any of you wh had problems getting into the chat because of security issues, Things should be back to normal now . Arthur
  15. Had mine this morning as well. No problem so far
  16. Thanks Bern, Do let me know if there any issues with the Chat. All seemed to be ok after I installed it but I may have missed setting up something. I miss being able to join in these days but the only way I could take part is if we were to hold the quiz very late at night when I get a bit of time. Not really a practical idea that.
  17. Comment has been raised about the no password when using the chat. The chatroom is set up based on guest logins. It is not a Chatroom for the use of a select group of members but is open to all. In the time we have been using this setup for the quiz nights etc we have been lucky in the respect that there has not been any abuse. If there were I am able to block by ISP. The room is not integrated with the forum but is entirely independent. You dont actualy need to use your forum name but it does help a great deal especially in the quizes as it enables new people to recognise you. Hopefully we can continues this way. As the software does not come with a registration system I would likely have to set uo something to enable this and at the present time I just am too tired and comitted elsewhere to spend time writing code.
  18. Please note that the web address of the chatroom has now changed to: https://www.nbnplus.co.uk/chat Please change any bookmarks to ensure you are in the right place for the next quiz. I will explain the reasons behind the change when I have more time. Still hope that one day I will be able to join in again.
  19. Would all those members who use the chatroom please note that the web address has now changed. The chatroom can now be found at: https://www.nbnplus.co.uk/chat As before log in with your forum name but do not enter a password.
  20. Any change from the current format would not be a good idea as it is the general banter during the quiz as well as some of the daft answers when someone has not got a clue of the answer that make the evening entertaining. Turning it into a serious quiz with a rigid format I think would put people off. One thing that I did find frustrating when I was more able to take part both as a competitior and occasionaly as QM was the way the quiz was turning into a googling competition. I am sure this put people off sometimes. I used to try various ideas that prevented people simply copying the question and pasting it into google. The picture rounds and the music rounds used to work well in this aspect. I recall on one occassion that I set a round of questions featuring the first lines of well known books. The books in question having to be named as the answer. To avoid the googling aspect I wrote all the questions in that round in Welsh. Amazingly most people still got the answers fairly quickly but just had to use a bit of thought. We alll have our favourite subjects and things we know nowt about. Questions on pop music were my pet hate as anything north of 1960 is lost on me. I have to admit that some improvements need to be made the chatroom. The previous one we used worked very well but depended on adobe flash . Unfortuntely a number of browsers were starting to block flash content which was why the change. Anyway I have some ideas and will get on with things as and when I can. Thankfully I have now got rid of the problems I was having with Windows 10 an have bought a Macbook. Bit of a learning curve after using Windows but so far so good. The chatroom is going to have to move to another server at some point soon but I will mimimise the downtime and let you know when. Its been another long day and I need some rest but I will give a bit more information on things shortly.
  21. I would like to make a few comments regarding the quiz. Firstly it is not meant to be a serious competition but more a means of unwinding at the end of the week. For many reasons I have been unable to take part for a long time now and I very much miss the social aspect. However, seeing as I provide the chatroom that is used for the quiz I feel I am entitled to comment. In the past we have even had Music rounds and Picture rounds which all added interesting a bit of variation. QM's occasionally make mistakes but personally I don't throw teddies out of the pram but just let it ride. There are more important things to worry about. I note there have been several low turnouts but one has got to remember that most peoples lives do not revolve around the forum and many of us this year have all sorts of unexpected issues to contend with. There has never been a select group and favouritism does not come in to deciding who the points are awarded to. The times stamp on each post is used as the basis for deciding the winner and if two answers have the same time stamp then both get a point. As has been pointed out on a number of occasions the quiz is open to all. There are no prizes other than the fact that the winner sets the next quiz. There is no compulsion to do this and if someone does not want to set a quiz then they can always ask the one who came second and then ask for volunteers. A possible reason for not many new people joining in the quiz could be that the web address of the chatroom does not appear as a link on the forum and unless people read the quiz thread they probably would not be aware of it. The room is usually used for the quiz on Friday evening but remember it is a chatroom open for anyone to use. I do look occasionally and I see it gets very little use outside of the quiz. I can't write more now as my assistance is required elsewhere but may add more later.
  22. I would agree with those that say 1960's but still could be 1970's difficult to tell as the map is not fully detailed being a tourist map. However, Yarmouth Beach station is not there and nor is the old Breydon Railway Bridge. Also the bridge that used to carry the line to Yarmouth Beach used to cross the Bure in the middle of the Yacht Station and it does not show on the map. It was still there in 1973. In those days it was Yacht morrings above the bridge and power craft below. In addion the line to Vauxhall station terminates without crossing the river. In the early 70's the tracks were still there along the road to the docks.
  23. In this case it is an Intel, Not sure of the same applies with AMD Processors.
  24. No problem with improvements to security and previous forced updates have not caused problems. this one has Decided I try again this evening but it won’t even boot now.
  25. Microsoft are a nightmare. Usually I get some notification when they are trying to force another update on me and I keep defering it for as long as I can. This time there was no warning and I switched the Laptop on yesterday to find it doing a load of updates. They have now completely messed up my system. As soon as the thing booted I was having that damn edge browser thrust in my face. It should have been easy to get rid of it but nothing seemed to work. All my setting have been messed up and some of my programs no longer work correctly. Windows 10 has been a pain from the word go. Yet my old laptop which ran Windows 7 was excellent. I replaced it earlier this year and found I could only buy a machine with window 10. My mind logically thought that as soon as I had got it home I would clear the hard drive and install Windows 7. This is where I found another Microsoft Nasty. The processer in the newer machines is now hard wired in some way so it will only work with Windows 10. It looks like I am going to have to do a complete re install to sort out the mess caused by the latest update after which I will see if I can set up a dual boot with Linux. I am currently typing on a very old machine loaded with linux Mint which works fine thank goodness. It is just very old and heavy. Think eventually I may follow Polly and go down the Mac route.
